Why No One Trusts Facebook To Power the Future

NaCh0 Facebook Censorship (218 comments)

Facebook has a very heavy hand at suspending accounts who don't mesh with the feminist agenda. If you post pro-masculine articles, prepare to have your account terminated as happened by the owner of the Return of Kings page. Other pro-male pages like the Tom Leykis show are suspecting they will be next.

Now maybe you aren't into masculinity and don't care. But when they come for your subject of choice, (guns? reverse engineering?) prepare to find yourself locked out.

Wal-Mart Sues Visa For $5 Billion For Rigging Card Swipe Fees

NaCh0 Re:Customers may benefit... maybe (455 comments)

For one, I don't think that Walmart's margins are so thin that they can't afford...

This is a case where it doesn't matter what you think. Walmart is a master of optimizing prices. Maximizing revenue is a duty to their shareholders. When they see waste, in this case on the transaction fees, they work their hardest to reduce it. That is what's happening here.

Walmart serves a different market from Costco so your bit about amex is not applicable. There was a time 10 or 15 years ago when Walmart tried to start a bank to get in on the interchange rates and government regulators killed the idea.

Is Daylight Saving Time Worth Saving?

NaCh0 As an Arizona resident (646 comments)

I can safely say moving your clocks is idiotic. If you want to work 8-4 or 9-5, it really don't matter at all. Just pick one and make it happen.

Samsung And Docomo Reportedly Working on Tizen Phone

NaCh0 Waste of time and energy (88 comments)

I love linux and use it everywhere but let's be honest - Tizen isn't going anywhere. These developers would be better off building a GPL pure ecosystem around Android.

As far as FSF artwork goes, the logo is pretty good.

Universities Hold Transcripts Hostage Over Loans

NaCh0 Re:Not really a problem (541 comments)

Your other option when you can't afford it is to take things step by step. Get your associates, take a step forward in your career. Get your bachelors, take a step forward in your career. Get your masters, etc. Sure you don't become a PhD by age 25 this way, but shockingly, life is not "fair."

Ask Slashdot: Writing Hardened Web Applications?

NaCh0 A Good Book - The Tangled Web (333 comments)

Coming from a windows environment, you've probably already lost.

But here is a book to show you how much you don't know (in a platform agnostic way):

The Tangled Web by Michal Zalewski.

Also, forget all of the advice above about starting by writing your own webserver. That's a fool's errand.

New Online Dictionaries Automate Away the Linguistic Middleman

NaCh0 Wordnik is a dictionary aggregator (60 comments)

I wonder what kind of sales pitch it takes to get $12 million for a free web dictionary.

'Just imagine if we could provide 100 definitions from other people for the word "butt", how much is that worth to you?'

US Scraps Virtual Fence Along Mexican Border

NaCh0 The Virtual Fence was always a dumb idea (437 comments)

Maybe it would be good at counting illegals crossing but it does nothing to stop them.

When hundreds of thousands (literally) cross every year, we don't need sensors on the border. Just stand there and some are sure to cross your path.

Congresswoman and Staff Gunned Down

NaCh0 Re:Ban guns (2166 comments)

Arizona is an open carry state but a permit is required to carry a concealed weapon. The permit process requires class work, background checks, fingerprinting, and no felony or domestic violence charges.

UK Police To Get Major New Powers To Seize Domains

NaCh0 A big deal (161 comments)

Since the UK doesn't have freedom of speech like here in the US, this could really change the internet by creating a roadmap for other countries to follow.

Oracle Asks OpenOffice Community Members To Leave

NaCh0 Looking at the transcript (589 comments)

That IRC meeting was painful. Is the reason OOo has been so slow to gain traction in America because nobody on the board speaks english or has the cultural fortitude to face tough issues? Thankfully louis_to was there to get down to business and make something happen.

Chrome OS To Support "Legacy" PC Apps Through Remote Access

NaCh0 I wouldn't be too hard on the feature (95 comments)

It will help a lot of people to have an easy to use remote desktop solution. Remove all of the client/server terminology to the end user. Just run this chromotion program on your windows pc and have the chrome station auto detect it. You privacy kooks are going to hate me for saying this: use the google cloud servers as an authentication and discovery proxy. The average slightly technical person eats this stuff up.

Who delivered the bribe to Sestak?

NaCh0 Change we can believe in? (517 comments)

You didn't think the change would be good, did you?

As that Sestak criminal would say, "The era of big government has returned."

The Go-Anywhere Cyber Cafe In a Shipping Container

NaCh0 Pentium 4? (145 comments)

They should have went with a more power efficient (and faster) core 2 duo. It's not like the cost difference would have been noticeable given the cost of the shipping container, solar panels, etc.
