Hackers' Shutdown of 'The Interview' Confirms Coding Is a Superpower

NotDrWho It wasn't the hacking that shut the movie down (220 comments)

...it was the legal liability incurred by Sony after the "hackers" threatened actual physical attacks on movie theaters. Sony simply couldn't afford the legal and financial risk that even one theater might be bombed or attacked. The hacking part of it had no bearing on that.

Skeptics Would Like Media To Stop Calling Science Deniers 'Skeptics'

NotDrWho Re:Established science CANNOT BE QUESTIONED! (658 comments)

It's rather arrogant to assume that all skeptics of global warming have a political/economic agenda. Many do, certainly. But I'm sure there are also plenty of legitimate scientists who would also question the conclusions and data, many of whom are no-doubt cowered into silence by the fervent majority.

And, on the other side of the coin, there are also plenty of global warming proponents who have their own economic/political agendas. The vast majority of the loudest global warming proponents are certainly not scientists. Most of them are environmental activists, with their own agenda to advance.

The bottom line is that you can't have legitimate science being conducted in an environment where you declare certain ideas sacrosanct and unquestionable. When the next Copernicus or Einstein comes along, do you really want to tell them that they're not allowed to question a fundamental idea that WE JUST KNOW IS TRUE!

Skeptics Would Like Media To Stop Calling Science Deniers 'Skeptics'

NotDrWho Re:Established science CANNOT BE QUESTIONED! (658 comments)

In thinking further, I do seem to recall also learning back in college of a system of established dogma that cannot be questioned. I believe it was called "religion."

Funny, because the science that I learned about in college was ALL ABOUT being constantly questioned.

NASA's $349 Million Empty Tower

NotDrWho Re:To be fair (200 comments)

It's simply not realistically possible to always perfectly plan multiple complex multi-year projects, when every your budget gets cut a little further, and you never know -- it's a roll of the dice -- if or how much it's going to get cut by -- then there is the secondary knock-on effect that of the small budget that remains*, the managers need to very carefully decide where to constantly try shift things around to try keep remaining projects going. The rocket program canceled in 2010 was probably canceled due to budget cuts. NASA's budget has consistently been cut, what, every year for the past 15 years? You can't entirely blame NASA - nobody can plan properly under those circumstances. Nobody, not you, or me, could end up not wasting any of it as a result of the constant shunting around.

If NASA had that same attitude in the 60's, the U.S. would still be trying to put its first man in space.

NASA's $349 Million Empty Tower

NotDrWho Re:Quoted from TFA (200 comments)

How about the fact that NASA's bureaucracy NEVER SPEAKS OUT AGAINST IT when a senator from Mississippi explicitly forbids them from stopping construction?

Little in return?? Why just look at all the generous aerospace contractor donations this project generated for Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker. You call THAT a FAILURE??

NASA's $349 Million Empty Tower

NotDrWho Makes sense if you understand NASA's real mission (200 comments)

This only doesn't make sense if you don't understand that NASA's *REAL* job is to funnel money to politically-connected contractors and produce a lot of PR bullshit. Anything science-related or any actual accomplishments in space are just a byproduct.

9th Circuit Will Revisit "Innocence of Muslims" Takedown Order

NotDrWho Re:Call me racist and evil and bigoted and everyth (158 comments)

what an awkward for this to come up as america is involved in more oppression, incarceration and war within its borders and across the globe than any other nation since WW2

America has done bad things, no doubt. But I hardly think it compares to regimes like Pol Pot, Kim Il Sung, pretty much any regime in Kosovo, Somalia, etc.

The U.S. generally only plays harsh when countries don't play ball (don't sell it oil, support the USSR/Russia over the U.S., etc.). And it has a nasty history of looking the other way when friendly oppressive regimes serve its economic interests (as in Chile, Saudi Arabia, etc.). But life under direct U.S. rule is far from "oppressive." And even in its economic interests, the U.S. will only look the other way for so long if a friendly dictator becomes openly oppressive.

And all of this hardly makes the U.S. exceptional. Pretty much every developed country does similar scummy things in its own economic and political interests. The U.S. is only exceptional in the reach of its economic and military power. Its methodology and philosophy is pretty unexceptional. In fact, U.S. colonialism is pretty light-handed compared with the historical colonialism of other European countries. The U.S. gives its conquered territories at least some autonomy. Compare that the British and French empires.

And if you want to talk heavy-handed, take a look at Israel sometime. The U.S. is downright sweet and cuddly compared to them. When the U.S. wants to stop your nuclear weapons program, they might send a computer virus and some economic sanctions after you. Israel just goes right to blowing up your nuclear scientists with car bombs.

Sony Pictures Leak Reveals Quashed Plan To Upload Phony Torrents

NotDrWho It has been done before (130 comments)

IIRC, there was a Madonna music video from many years back (before YouTube had pretty much every much video available), where the pirate sites were flooded with a fake video of Madonna bad-mouthing pirates, posing as the real music video.
