My NSA-induced paranoia level:

Orcris Actively watching me (290 comments)

Due to all the far-left socialist (and I mean that in the classic Marxist definition of the term, not Scandinavian social democracy) sites I visit, I'm sure that they're actively monitoring what I'm doing on my computer.

North Korea Declares a State of War

Orcris Re:Nothing New (628 comments)

All four nuclear nations

There are 9 nuclear nations: France, the UK, China, Russia, the USA, India, Pakistan, Israel, and North Korea. Out of those, the first 5 are all recognized in the NPT. India, Pakistan, and Israel never signed the NPT. North Korea withdrew. Which 4 are you talking about?

North Korea Declares a State of War

Orcris Re:Nothing New (628 comments)

North Korea has a huge assortment of artillery buried in the mountain that's designed to survive almost short of a nuke. And speaking of nukes, they have those as well. I doubt they could cause much damage to the US, but they could cause a lot to South Korea, China, and Japan.

North Korea Declares a State of War

Orcris Re:They ARE the memo (628 comments)

The US is more likely to attack Iran. It needs some war, but it would be easier to get away with one against a country with a supposed WMD program that is sponsoring terrorists than one that definitely has a WMD program. Also, all of the NK refugees would spill into China and SK. Neither of those countries could deal with them.

US To Deploy Ballistic Missile Interceptors In Response To North Korean Threats

Orcris Re:One word: (266 comments)

China is only supporting the DPRK as a buffer between it and South Korea. They would Abba abandon it as soon as a war starts. I'm sure they have having an unpredictable nuclear state on their border just as much as the ROK.

Orcris Re:A better use (266 comments)

We could. Then, refugees would flood China and South Korea. Neither of those countries could deal with it.

US To Deploy Ballistic Missile Interceptors In Response To North Korean Threats

Orcris Re:Time to put the foot down (266 comments)

Whenever we cut off aid, North Korea throws a tantrum and does a nuclear test. We promptly restore food shipments.

US To Deploy Ballistic Missile Interceptors In Response To North Korean Threats

Orcris Re:Socialism at it's finest! (266 comments)

I wouldn't really say it's been working in China. The government's rich, but the average person is pretty bad off. I'd agree with you on the other places, though.

Shorter '.uk' Domain Name Put On Ice

Orcris I have a different solution (110 comments)

England should get the .en domain. Whales should get thu .wl domain. Northern Ireland should get a domain, but .ni is taken. .st, .sd, .so, and .st are taken, but I'm sure some domain could be thought of for Scotland.

The Road To KDE Frameworks 5 and Plasma 2

Orcris Re: Frameworks (89 comments)

Why? All this is is modularizing KDE by splitting it into separate parts. This probably won't affect the end user at all, just the developers.

Valve Starts Promoting Steam For Linux To Windows Users

Orcris Re:Why? (474 comments)

It's not that it's too hard to set up. All you need to do is boot up a live CD, go through some easy configuration, and click install. If you are missing a driver, it's more complicated, but I think most hardware is supported. The problem is that most users go with the OS that comes with their computer, rather than installing a different one.

Slashdot Asks: What would you like to see at CES?

Orcris Nexus TV (102 comments)

So far, there wasn't been any Google TV that would be the equivalent of a Nexus. I want a TV that runs stock Google TV software and is guaranteed to get updates. I'd also like to see Google TV merged with Android, but that probably wouldn't be announced at CES.

Ask Slashdot: Programming On A Tablet?

Orcris Orcris writes  |  more than 2 years ago

Orcris (2652275) writes "I recently got a Nexus 7, and I've been using it almost exclusively as my computing device. One of the only things I still use my desktop for is programming. The only languages I use are Ruby, for web development, and Java, for developing Android apps. What are your suggestions about programming on a tablet?"

Ask Slashdot: What are some tips for making a P2P chat system?

Orcris Orcris writes  |  more than 2 years ago

Orcris writes "I'm going to try making a chat system similar to IRC, except that is serverless. It's going to use a P2P connection, so it will be resilient and won't need to rely on any server to work. How should I get started doing this? What programming language should I use? I'm going to try to make this work on POSIX and Windows. Any other tips?"
