Calif. DMV Back-Pedals On Commercial-Plate Mandate For Ride-Share Drivers

OverlordQ Re:Insurance (202 comments)

> Do remember that, theoretically, Uber/Lyft types aren't doing this full time, but more a matter of "I'm heading out to Walmart, anyone want to come along?".

Theoretically yes, in reality that's about as far from the truth as you can get for Uber drivers.

Behind the MOOC Harassment Charges That Stunned MIT

OverlordQ Re:Not trying to excuse what he did (368 comments)

> In the whole history of people being psychologically manipulated and abused, they *all* could have stopped it simply by saying no, and walking away.

Yes, maybe in the real world, face to face interaction where you can't click block and they're gone.

Behind the MOOC Harassment Charges That Stunned MIT

OverlordQ Re:If Only the Article Addressed That ... (368 comments)

I read the article. I'm just claiming bullshit on the argument that somehow this physics professor is such a master psychological manipulator that he coerced dozens of women halfway across the world to send him nudes over the internet for no good reason.

If you're *that* emotionally troubled with abandonment issues that you're sending a guy over the internet that has no leverage over you nudes, I dont see how you can deal with offline interactions period.

Fighting Tech's Diversity Issues Without Burning Down the System

OverlordQ Re:Honest question. (479 comments)

Because humans, for the most part, are pretty stupid and fail to grasp that just because there's an uneven number of something, doesn't make it not normal or perfectly fine.

Bitcoin Volatility Puts Miners Under Pressure

OverlordQ Re:A metric for price (290 comments)

> If there isn't enough mining going on to produce the mining rewards that should be awarded daily, the difficulty will quarter every two weeks until the rewards are enough to incentivize miners to continue doing so.

The difficulty only gets changed after the number of blocks since the last adjustment have been met. If less people mine, blocks take longer, blocks take longer, adjustment takes longer. So if people keep dropping out, it'll be a lot more than two weeks for the next adjustment.

Slashdot blows goats

OverlordQ OverlordQ writes  |  more than 3 years ago

This redesign is seriously pissing me off, trying to click links in collapsed comments just expands that comment. Clicking again just expands the next higher level comment, and so on and so forth. Then once all the bullshit is done expanding clicking the link does nothing! How the hell does /. fail so hard.

Wherefore thou art Mod Points?

OverlordQ OverlordQ writes  |  more than 5 years ago

So, saw a comment today regarding some people getting 10 mod points instead of the normal 5. Must be nice, I haven't seen any mod points in literally 6+ years. I can pretty much narrow down when they disappeared too, after posting in political articles from a conservative standpoint. Supposedly there's no 'blacklist' but I'm sure it's statistically very very unlikely to go without mod points for so long. Anybody else suffering from an suspiciously odd drought of mod points?

(And yes, I'm not using Wherefore thou art to mean why)

Google Disables IMAP?

OverlordQ OverlordQ writes  |  about 7 years ago

I don't know how many of you have checked your GMail this morning, but having pulled an all-nighter again, I got a rather strange notice in Thunderbird saying my account was not enabled for IMAP, or something to that nature. Upon logging into GMail's web-interface, I noticed in the Settings page "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" has reverted back to "Forwarding and POP" again. Is this permanent, or just a temporary change by Google?

Edit: Strangest one-off bug, signed out, then signed back in again, and the setting is back.

Ghetto

OverlordQ OverlordQ writes  |  more than 8 years ago

Got my car broken into again, almost caught them in the act too. For those keeping score this is B&E #3, and broken window #2 with a bonus completely bent window frame. This time I had my factory radio in, and I guess they didnt want the tape deck since it's still in there. Overall I guess they didn't take anything so that's a plus. Another plus is I dont have a concealed carry license and I dont have a gun by my bed so I couldn't shoot at them as they drove off, because I would of been very so tempted, but then I'd prolly get in trouble for discharging a firearm. Oh well, it's 3:41am and I got classes at 9:30, but stuff like this pisses me off and I need to rant.

Mozilla isn't the 'Good Guy' anymore.

OverlordQ OverlordQ writes  |  more than 9 years ago

Sorry to say it, but it's not. Given the recent posts on slashdot from devs/ex-devs and considering their 'old boy' attitude on this bug (can't link from slashdot). Add in that whole MNG fiasco, it looks less and less that the Mozilla devs care about what their users want and more of what they want.

Calling All Pilots

OverlordQ OverlordQ writes  |  more than 9 years ago

Well not all pilots, military pilots. I'm trying to verify some info I was told a *long* time ago about a certain button on the KC-135 (Can't remember which Bloc/Revision/etc but I'm guessing a 135R) that sits between the APU starts. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

OverlordQ OverlordQ writes  |  more than 9 years ago Since I'm too lazy to retype out the story I'll just copy paste how I told it on IRC:

<@OvrLrd-Q> i about died driving home from school lol
<@MrPilot> damn straight.
<@MrPilot> ack
<@MrPilot> what did you do this time
<@OvrLrd-Q> lol wasn't me
<@OvrLrd-Q> ok
<@OvrLrd-Q> there was this trailer, wide load
<@OvrLrd-Q> hauling this big boiler thing
<@OvrLrd-Q> van behind it
<@OvrLrd-Q> then me
<@OvrLrd-Q> driving down I-35
<@OvrLrd-Q> it (the wide load truck) slammed on its brakes or something
<@OvrLrd-Q> cuz it started slowing down real fast
<@OvrLrd-Q> so I change into the right lane to go around since i'm like wtfmblts
<@OvrLrd-Q> anyways I switch over
<@OvrLrd-Q> look in the lane, look back at the wide load trailer, look at the lane again
<@OvrLrd-Q> and think
<@OvrLrd-Q> "Oh so that's why it's slowing down"
<@OvrLrd-Q> and I put on my brakes to avoid the tire that's rolling down the highway
<@MrPilot> rofl
<@OvrLrd-Q> i dont mean tire I mean rim and all
<@OvrLrd-Q> bounced down the road a bit, hit the guardrail and bounced over

Worse then the /. Effect

OverlordQ OverlordQ writes  |  more than 11 years ago

There is a thing worse then the /. effect . . . I deem it the . . . DRUDGE EFFECT (Drudge Report)

VISITS TO DRUDGE
10/30/03
  007,528,755 IN PAST 24 HOURS
  182,871,824 IN PAST 31 DAYS
1,806,293,267 IN PAST YEAR

Considering /. only does 3M+ hits a day (according to Taco's Journal), dont get linked from Drudge Report :) considering it has over twice as many hits a day as slashdot.

Is there some Moderation Boycott I didn't hear about? I used to browse at +2 but found that way to cluttered so I changed that to +3 . . now I rarely if ever see more then 10 posts modded more then +3 per story. . . is the Moderation System borked or are people just not using their mod points or what?

Internal Messenging

OverlordQ OverlordQ writes  |  more than 11 years ago

What I think would be an interesting, albeit probably a bad idea in the long run (spam), is an Internal Messenging system for slashdot. Users can send private messages to each other, instead of having to post it in their Journals. This way, I could find out why the hell some people put me as a friend, for instance ;)
