Oracle Shuttering OpenSSO

PFAK Re:This is the way of MySQL too? (128 comments)

Well, considering, there is no official announcement from Oracle that they are pulling OpenSSO from their product lineup. This article/blog entry is mere speculation.

MS Virtual PC Flaw Defeats Windows Defenses

PFAK Re:Ugh, this isn't good. (141 comments)

It's a good thing this vulnerability doesn't allow the host system to be compromised, otherwise we'd be in real trouble!

PFAK Firefox has the ability to set a master password (1007 comments)

I don't know why this hasn't been mentioned, but you can set a master password on your Firefox password manager to make sure that your passwords are kept secure via encryption.

Ultracapacitor Bus Recharges At Each Stop

PFAK Re:We've been doing this for years (419 comments)

We have those in Vancouver as well, except we have articulated and single electric trolleys. Great idea, virtually silent.

Ultracapacitor Bus Recharges At Each Stop

PFAK Re:Isn't this the same as a trolley? (419 comments)

I don't know where you live, but in Vancouver no roads were torn up to put in tracks or stations built. Our trolley system relies on overhead wires which caused minimal disruption when installation was done and no modification to existing roadways.

Software To Diagnose Faulty PC Hardware?

PFAK Re:OCCT (274 comments)

Did you actually install it? (or are you a typical /. reader?) It has a "GPU" option for stress testing your graphics card if you have the latest DirectX updates installed.

Shaw Cable Again Blocks Firewire On Canadian Set-Top Boxes

PFAK Re:Odd timing... they've finally got competition (257 comments)

How is TELUS competition to Shaw? They have a very small footprint for deployment and inferior technology:

You can get a maximum of 2 TV's streaming at the same time with TTV assuming you're right next to a DSLAM/CO and you can only get 3.0Mbps Internet if you have TTV.

Yes, but I think you have to take Price vs. Reward: The X61 is a very attractive offering if you look at the price point of it.

Multiple Fiber Cuts In San Francisco Area

PFAK Story is a troll? (368 comments)

Back in '05 when our local telecommunications company (TELUS) in British Columbia went on strike, some lines were cut and service for a couple thousand customers was lost. Of course, the first thing the company does is blame the union for sabotage.

Turns out it was just some thieves cutting the lines for copper, but that didn't come out until a month after the labour dispute ended.

Most likely the same thing happened here, thieves aren't exactly smart and most union employees would not risk the bad press something like this would generate.

Graduate Student Defends Right To Own

PFAK Re:Disconcerting. (461 comments)

That's pretty much how it is. If you don't have money to defend a domain then you pretty much have to give up it.

I was threatened in 2006 over my ownership of, you can read about it on my website.
