Ask Slashdot: Best Wi-Fi Solution For a Hotel?

Patik Policy (300 comments)

The best hotel wifi experiences have been when I was given the SSID and (simple) password at check-in and, most importantly, the signal reached my room. There's nothing worse than having to go down the hall every time you want a signal, and many people will have smartphones so don't make the password 20 digits.

Dropbox 1.0 Finally Released

Patik Re:would be nice... (307 comments)

Under the General Preferences you can check "Enable LAN sync" which should be on by default. Yes, you're still sending it all to Amazon S3, but the files are also copied directly over the LAN to your other PCs rather than uploading to S3 and then downloading from S3.

Hobbit Film Finally Gets Green Light, To Be Shot in 3-D

... but Peter Jackson is nearly 2-D. The photo in TFA is the first time I've seen him not looking like a rotund hobbit -- ironically, a spherical shape that would lend itself nicely to a 3-D movie, should he choose to cast himself.

Audi A8 Gets Factory Integrated Mobile Hotspot

Patik Re:Tethering (126 comments)

It's still a good thing because car features tend to work their way down from luxury vehicles to "average joe" vehicles over time. Remember when only luxury cars had power windows or remote controls for (un)locking? Now those are a given in all but the most basic models. Sure, it'll take years, but at least it's beginning.

Eventually another manufacturer will want to make their semi-luxury car look like an Audi A8 and they'll add wifi. Then a slightly cheaper car than that will want to appear to be a good value, so they'll throw in "Audi features" for the same price (and these hotspots can't be that expensive when bought in bulk compared to the overall cost of the car), and so on.

Survey Says Most iPhone Users Love AT&T

Patik Re:Why is this alarming? (490 comments)

What a load of crap. It's impossible to come up with any sort of 'translation' without knowing what question was asked of the pollees. If it was "when you buy your next phone, will it be the same one (iPhone/Android)?" then your rewording would be entirely false.

You're also insinuating that 77% of iPhone users are numbskulls who will just keep buying iPhones until Apple makes a 'good' one, in their eyes, while Android users are much more thoughtful and bright. As much as slashdotters love to drag out that old joke, you know it's ridiculous.

Additionally, it's laughable to assume that any smartphone owner who is happy with their current phone will never buy an updated model in the future. I'm guessing you were happy with your PC in 1995 -- do you still use that PC as your main machine, or have you upgraded since then?

Catching Satnav Errors On Google Street View

Patik They're incorrect on purpose (312 comments)

Go read the documentation on openstreetmaps.org. Map companies put incorrect data in there on purpose to detect and prevent copying. This is why someone at OSM didn't just write a script to copy the whole thing at once, and why their maps have to be created manually.

IE Market Share Falls To Historic Low

Patik Re:soooo? (472 comments)

You can attach multiple event handlers very easily, since at least IE6.

document.attachEvent('onload',function1); document.attachEvent('onload',function2); document.attachEvent('onload',function3);

Or to a particular element:

myElem.attachEvent('onclick',function1); myElem.attachEvent('onclick',function2); myElem.attachEvent('onmouseover',function3); myElem.attachEvent('onmouseout',function4);

Of course you have to use a bit of object detection to determine whether to use attachEvent or addEventListener, but a function that handles that for all browsers is one of the first things I paste into my code. Then it's just a simple myAddEventFunction(HTMLelement,'click',functionName); and who cares what browser that runs in.

Saying No To Promotions Away From Tech?

Patik Re:That's bad advice. (410 comments)

Why not tell the new job you'll start in 4 weeks, work the last 2 weeks at the old job, then take a 2 week vacation in between? (Assuming you can handle it financially.) If the new job presses you about the time span, try to gauge what their reaction will be and give them an semi-honest answer if you think they'll bite ("I'm taking a break to recharge before I start here, so I'm totally refreshed and can jump right in"). If you don't think they'd like that, you could fall back on a white lie and say you've got some personal stuff to take care of. Either way, everything is cleared up front and there are no shenanigans that can come back to haunt you once you begin the new job.

iPhone App Store Rejects Find a New Home

Patik Re:Article title correction (152 comments)

I first read "reject" as a verb when it's actually used as a noun (or an adjective in your example), but 'rejection' is much clearer. And it wasn't trivial to separate the subject from the rest of the sentence. How about this: "A New Home for Stories of iPhone App Store Rejection"

Earthquake stories

Patik Patik writes  |  more than 9 years ago 23,000 dead and counting. Tsunamis as far away as Somalia.

CNN:

Nate Berkus, a regular contributor to "The Oprah Winfrey Show," said he and a friend were sleeping in a beachfront cottage at Arugam Bay on Sri Lanka's eastern coast when he heard a loud noise and the roof was ripped off.

Berkus, 33, said they were swept into the sea along with debris, animals and other people.

The two grabbed a telephone pole, he said, but lost their grips when asecond large wave hit. Berkus told CNN that he climbed onto the roof of a home; his friend was missing.

Berkus said he and about 50 other survivors -- tourists and locals -- spent the rest of the night in a field, but were without water and food. Many of the group were injured, including a pregnant woman who had broken ribs, he said.

BBC:

"...soldiers were sent to recover bodies from trees where they were dumped by huge waves, as correspondents reported the stench of death was beginning to become overpowering...

.....One man could not find dry ground to bury his wife and two children..."

Free iPods and flat screen TVs conga? gmail invites, too

Patik Patik writes  |  more than 9 years ago I'm sure you've seen this before, but maybe those of us on /. can start our own conga. The way the deal works: click on someone's referer link, sign up, pick one of the offers and cancel it as soon as it goes through (i.e., sign up for a free month of AOL then cancel it before they bill you). It requires a credit card, but you won't be charged anything.

The conga part comes in where everyone here uses someone's link to sign up, then leaves their own link. I'm sure you can all find a family member or friend to fill in the gaps if there are any.

Free iPod
Free flat screen TV

I'll give a gmail invite to anyone who uses either of my links.

Gmail - new users vs. older users

Patik Patik writes  |  about 10 years ago I've had my address since June. I got a new account yesterday to use for work. I noticed that on my new account the "apply label" menu has been combined with the "more actions" menu, whereas on my old account they are separate menus. I just tried refreshing and flushing the cache, but they're still different. No upgrade for older users?

Update: Three days later I tried to log in and got stuck on the "Loading..." screen. I emptied my cache and the new version (with combined menus) loaded.

A fix for the new IT color scheme

Patik Patik writes  |  about 10 years ago By now you've probably seen the ugly beige of the it.slashdot.org section. In a comment the other day, I found a neat fix. If you obfuscate the URL by changing just the subdomain (i.e., change it to http://shit.slashdot.org/) it'll display the same page but with the old (green) color scheme.

Anyone know of a way to make my browser (Firefox on Windows) intercept incoming it.slashdot.org URLs and rewrite them as xxxx.slashdot.org? Maybe something to add to my style sheet?

Survivor and other shows spoiled by network commercials

Patik Patik writes  |  more than 10 years ago (minor Survivor spoiler)

Anyone else notice how network TV ads are giving away too much? Fox commercials regularly give away key points in 24's plot. Just saw an ad on CBS for Survivor, and they basically told us that the merge is happening next episode.

I know it's not the end of the world, but why do they feel the need to give things away? Might as well just wait till the last five minutes to tune in and see who gets voted off.

Nationstates ad trick

Patik Patik writes  |  more than 10 years ago I know a bunch of you visit Nationstates often (or am I the only one still doing it?). You've probably cursed at that ugly giant yellow ad at the top that only appears when you log in (why?). You probably cursed a second time when you realized your fancy adblocking plugin wouldn't get rid of it. But I figured out how to do it, using a CSS page. IE, Mozilla, and Opera users can do this (here's how).

Paste the following in your .css file:

/* Remove ad table for NationStates */
table[border="1"][width="100%"][cellpadding="2"][cellspacing="4"]
{display: none ! important}

Be sure to remove any spaces in the second line added by the Slashdot lameness filter. The third line should have a space on each side of the exclamation mark.

Restart your browser and the ad should be gone.

Another rejected submission posted anyway

Patik Patik writes  |  more than 10 years ago So far I've submitted two polls and both were rejected then immediately posted to the main page with some slight modifications. First was the e-mail abuse poll, now the current beer type poll. In both cases a couple options were added and one was deleted, but the poll idea and a majority of the options were ones I submitted.

I guess if your submission isn't perfect for publication the editors reject it then submit their own. Oh well...

Amazing.

Patik Patik writes  |  more than 10 years ago Just got my iPod today. Wow. It's so much more small, sleek, and just plain cool than I ever expected it to be. The backlight is awesome. The button sensitivity is perfect. It feels just right in my hand.

Until now I had a Creative Nomad Jukebox. I bought it because it was far cheaper than the then-new iPod, and I figured as long as it wasn't bigger than my Discman it'd be fine. Wrong. Turns out I used it far more than I imagined. The weight/size became a real nuisance, the batteries only lasted 2-3 hours (depending on how many start-ups/shutdowns), and it was extremely slooooow (40 second boot time, very slow response while playing). The iPod's huge price tag (I'm a poor college kid) ate at me, but finally I just couldn't take it anymore.

My Nomad was 20GB and filled to within 200MB of the limit, so I figured I should get a 30GB iPod (they're the price of a new 20GB since they're discontinued). I was pleasantly surprised to find that it boots up instantaneously and the UI is just as fast whether playing a song or not. Pretty sweet.

As a Windows user, I'm still getting used to Apple's "we'll do all the work for you" approach, often getting anxious that it's doing a little too much for me without asking me for confirmation. However, it's awfully nice to just plop the player in the dock and let it auto-sync any new songs or playlists I've made and charge it up all in one go. All that and it barely makes a bulge in my pocket. Pretty sweet, indeed.

Weekend in Salem

Patik Patik writes  |  more than 10 years ago Just got back from Salem, MA. It was my first significant trip (3.5 hrs away) without my parents, which made it a thousand times better. Just me and my gf, who was the driving reason behind going (she loves the Halloween season).

In terms of things to do, Salem is great. Plenty of tours, museums, and other things to do. We went on a night tour that told us all about the witch trials of 1692, filling in a lot of the background info that tends to get left out (even in the 'official' witch museum). At one point when we were waiting for some stragglers to catch up, the guide asked if any of us were New Yorkers. My gf spoke up, and we were booed -- guess everyone's still a little sore over the ALCS (: The weather was decent and the crowds weren't too bad, though we did spend an hour just trying to find a parking spot on the first day.

This was my first experience driving in New England, and I hope it's my last. I was worried that my Mapquest directions and maps would be innaccurate or outdated, but they turned out to be spot-on perfect. Unfortunately, maps are no good when streets aren't labeled. We spent an hour trying to get to our hotel (which was 7 miles from Salem and on a major road) simply because we could never tell where the hell we were. Note to self: don't go back there without a GPS receiver.

I was long overdue for a parent-less vacation (I'm 22), but no money and lack of a dependable car made it pretty much impossible till now. I'm hoping to take some more mini-trips to Quebec City, Montreal, and maybe even NYC or Boston if I can find a reasonable way to get there (I'm not driving into the city!).

Boring world series?

Patik Patik writes  |  more than 10 years ago On one hand, it's the Yankees (who I hate) versus the Marlins (who I could care less about).

Pretty boring stuff.

On the other hand, the Marlins put up quite a fight against the Cubs, so it could get interesting, possibly even a 6- or 7-game series. Unfortunately, I still have to put my money on the Yankees.

If only Pedro was pulled in the 7th so I could be celebrating right now instead of moping.

Salem, MA

Patik Patik writes  |  more than 10 years ago Since my girlfriend is obsessed with Halloween, and we were looking to take a weekend off together, we settled on Salem, MA. After much (online) searching for an actual hotel (not bed 'n' breakfast) that didn't cost an arm and a leg, we're all set for a mid-October weekend. It'll be our first trip by ourselves (still in college, so we haven't had much opportunity) and I'm really looking forward to it.

Anybody ever been out to Salem during this time of year? There are plenty of events to keep us busy, but we're looking for suggestions on what things we should make sure we get to.
