Scotland Could Become Home To Britain's First Spaceport

Pax681 Re:Political background (151 comments)

nuclear submarine base

Indeed, now what are you going to do with an empty submarine base?

90% of its oil revenue

The UK is a net importer of oil these days - there is no oil revenue. You may be able to make a small profit on the last trickles, though.

permanent seat on the UN security council

Unlikely, but I know for sure who won't be on it...

That doesn't take into account the oil/gas off the West coast of Scotland nor does it take into account the Scottish stake of the Rockall claim.
BTW i'd hardly call 1.5 trillion barrels a trickle... and that's just the north Sea.
who gives a fuck about a seat on the security council to be quite frank???
As for what to do with an empty submarine base??? now that's EASY.. refit it as a support base much like the port at Nig off the north east which makes astonishing money servicing oil rigs, support vessels and exploratory rigs... combine that with a wee touch of the support role Aberdeen port plays and you have a winner... simple enough for you?

Scotland Could Become Home To Britain's First Spaceport

Pax681 Re:Must vote remain underlings (151 comments)

Bleh. If that's all you know about it I'd keep quiet and stick to your areas of competence.

Care to point out any times where Alex Salmond (or anyone else from that party) have publicly declared that their behaviour in executing such undemocratic power is reprehensible and it willbe for the greater good when that power is given up?

Or are you claiming that that's the only thing I know about the entire issue of independence? If the latter, then don't be a fool. Just because I have highlighted the best issue in favour of "yes" doesn't mean I know nothing about the rest of them.

I CAN!.. the Scottish National Party DO NOT VOTE ON ANY MATTERS NOT PERTAINING TO SCOTLAND IN WESTMINSTER!
This is a long standing policy and their response to the West Lothian as posed by Tam Dalyell. .... So.. care to actually state something that isn't patently and provably false?

Your personal phone preferences are irrelevant. This is a discussion of a specific feature of iOS and a weakness of Android.

it must've really made you weed when the saviour.. the lord jobs kacked it eh? i bet you wept onto your wee i-devices.... shame that's not covered under waranty eh? LOL.
however it's hilariously funnyh that MY preference and experience with android devices somehow negates what i say but your blatant fucking fanboism driven bollocks is fine?

Avast Buys 20 Used Phones, Recovers 40,000 Deleted Photos

Pax681 Re:Where the fault lies? (231 comments)

But how many people actually reset phone and reset data? I'd imagine a lot of people simply manually delete their photos and unhook their Internet accounts from the phone. Hardly a wipe.

But it's so easy to do on iOS. You can do it on the phone - Settings->General->Reset

And it wipes the phone - the flash storage is encrypted. Resetting it wipes the key and generates a new one. It then reboots and reformats the user storage using the new key and mounts it. The old data is irrecoverable because the key is lost, and the new data is written using a new key.

Even prior to encrypted storage, iOS3 created the option to do it where it erases and wipes the storage - anything 3GS and newer wipes keys (so wiping takes a couple of minutes), older ones took a couple of hours.

No reason Android can't do the same - either by sending TRIM commands to the entire user storage area and then forcing a write-all-with-zeroes to be doubly sure.

Android CAN do the same by simply performing a factory reset.. apple hardly had a fucking monopoly on factory reset functions in phones.
it's just that most normal users haven't a fucking clue and thus don't reset their phones to factory state and that's where the problem lies.

Pax681 Re:Any chance at getting one? (82 comments)

I predict they'll never be available in the US/UK for anything like that little money. There'll be taxes and import duty and this and that and....and it'll end up being 3 times that, and for the money you'd be able to buy something which less horrific performance. There's no profit in this for anyone - why bother in the first place?

Nah .. at under £20 GBP it is under the import tax threshold.. so no import tax on this puppy for Scotland or the UK

Uber Demonstrations Snarl Traffic In London, Madrid, Berlin

Pax681 Re:Unfair Competition Sucks (507 comments)

Black Cabs uniquely use taximeters - the machines that work out the fare, given distance and time, and display it to users. Private Hire cars make their own arrangements with their customers

NOT TRUE!! !Both private hire and black cabs have metres in Scotland. Black cab rates are a bit higher but both CERTAINLY have metres mandated by law.

Uber Demonstrations Snarl Traffic In London, Madrid, Berlin

Pax681 Re:Competition Sucks (507 comments)

what puts the higher price on these vehicles license plates is that usually there is a limited number of them
For example, Edinburgh city council limits the amount of black taxi vehicles plates to 300 in total(this is a made up number.. dunno how many it actually is)
Now it might only cost you say £500 GBP to buy that plate from the council if you were the original purchaser. you see this plate can be transferred from one vehicle to the other. it outlives the vehicle and thus due to it's limited availability it can and does sell for FORTUNES at auctions held for the rare occasion they come up for sale.
London is NOT unique in doing the "knowledge". I can only speak for Scotland however each council here requires all black hack drivers to do the knowledge for their license area... i just pity the poor fuckers in the Highlands who have a gargantuan area to commit to memory!

Uber Demonstrations Snarl Traffic In London, Madrid, Berlin

Pax681 Re:Competition Sucks (507 comments)

WRONG!.. in the case of Scotland certainly.
all drivers of vehicles licensed to carry passengers on a commercial basis must be licensed themselves.
Then the cars have to undergo safety checks and emissions tests and once the vehicle is licensed it must be appropriately insured with appropriate passenger liability insurance.
Otherwise it's 100% illegal for people to charge fares for taking people anywhere commercially. plain and simple as that.
In the case of Taxi drivers with a "Black cab license"(those who drive the classic London cabs) ... then those guys have to STUDY for a minimum of two years and sit an exam called "the knowledge" to show that they know well the geography of the area. And their vehicles taxi license plates, in Edinburgh anyway, SELL FOR A FUCKING FORTUNE.....
The thing with Uber is that it is setting rates that are NOT set by the local councils Taxi licensing board. In Scotland each city council/local authority sets the rates for both black taxis and private hire cars such as Uber would be legally classified. Thus they are undercutting in a way that other companies would be legally disallowed from doing as the rates are set firm by the councils so as to avoid customers being humped.

So as you an see, at least here in Scotland, and possibly in england,Waqles and northern Ireland too.... Uber would have to recruit drivers who were already licensed with licensed vehicles , start it's own fleet and get drivers in to drive them or... operate illegally and get humped in various courts and jurisdictions around the "UK"

Uber Demonstrations Snarl Traffic In London, Madrid, Berlin

Pax681 Re:Competition Sucks (507 comments)

In what way? Do you have any evidence?

well here in Scotland a taxi driver has to be vetted for criminal records etc, then licensed. If he is an owner/driver then his car has to be passed through a "TAXI MOT"(MOT being an annual test for all cars here BUT this one is more stringent).
Also there is specific commercial insurance.... to suggest otherwise is just plain fucking ridiculous, seriously fucking ridiculous.
For vehicles used for commercial/business application, most especially passenger transportation, then specialised commercial insurance is required.
All private hire (ie non black taxi/hackney) vehicles licensed for passenger transportation have to display a special license plate on their rear bumper and also display this information, including the drivers taxi permit inside along with his photograph.
This is why Uber has no operations in Scotland as far as i know... because they, most likely, would be illegal in some respect here or not up to spec in some way.

Ask Slashdot: Do 4G World Phones Exist?

Pax681 Try Three.co.uk for your SIM (259 comments)

for cheapness or both voice and data go for www.threee.co.uk
not only does it have all you can eat voice, but all you can eat data too and you can tether(4gb total tethering) and all phone data unlimited or filtered. mind you a little user agent spoofing bypasses the cap..lol

This is perfect for skype/oovoo scenarios where 4g would help.

Your daughter would be best going to either Glasgow,Aberdeen,Edinburgh or Dundee universities as those will have the best coverage being the biggest places.. St Andrews may have the name but it's not exactly a thriving metropolis.. so i would recommewnd any GSM phone of yer choise with a 3 SIM in it, that way only battery life can interrupt your connectivity and thus contact via voice/video etc.

DISCLOSURE - I AM a customer of three and have been for years.I don't work for them though.... they are much better than they used to be and unlimited 4g at no extra cost isn't a toughie to ask someone, it's a good deal.. in fact at the moment you can still get "The One Plan" month to month contract SIM card with 2000 minutes, unlimited data and 5000 texts for a mere 23 GBP..

Better Together Campaign Abuse D.M.C.A to Censor Video

Pax681 Pax681 writes  |  about a year ago

Pax681 writes "The Pro-union Better Together Campaign have been abusing the automated DMCA take down procedures at Youtube,Vimeo and Daily Motion in order to remove a video Top Ten Unionist Myths Debunked which perfectly legally uses excerpts from Better Together's own videos.
Under UK copyright law there are provision under "Fair Dealing" for using exceprts for "Criticism and news reporting" , much the same as the DMCA in the USA with their n"Fair Use" clause.
There have been more than 30 take downs thus far between the various sites. the video is currently being hosted by Pro-independence online Radio station Radio Free Scotland on it's Video Safe Harbour page.
No Matter what side of the debate you stand on this is clearly an attempt at political censorship abusing the automated DMCA takedown systems at those sites and worse a clear attempt to stifle debate in what is the most important debate in 300 years for Scotland and it's electorate.
Better together have apparently claim that the complaint was to "protect" the people in the video.. well.. the video's are all publicly available and if the BT Campaign was so worried it would not have asked the people to be in them Also this statement from them doesn't come under copyright at all and in itself shows that the DMCA/copyright complaint is actually utterly unfounded.
In True internet Fashion the video has also been popping up on youtube and other sites continually in a Streisand effect response. Radio Free Scotland have stated that they won't take the video down as it is clearly legal and legitimate in it's use of the excerpts to debunk the "myths" of the Better Together Campaign.
Slashdots thoughts on this abuse of the DMCA to censor?"

Demonoid Domains name for sale

The Demonoid domain names are now officially for sale via Sedo, the final nail in the coffin for the popular site that was taken down via a combined assault from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry and Interpol. More Drama in the emerald Viewer Story

Pax681 Pax681 writes  |  more than 3 years ago

Pax681 (1002592) writes "The Emerald Viewer Team seems to be just Two people now after Arabella Steadham and Lonely Bluebird shout out the rest of the Devs

Find a statement sent out this afternoon over Second Life to emerald users quoted in full Below Seems that trademark a has been applied for by Lonely Bluebird and thus i assume the rest of them, as suggested, will go off and develop their own brand of the emerald viewer and keeping it clean of emerald branding in any way.

looks like emerald will be taken off the approved user list... again! for now........

As you can see now thefrosums are abuzz with talk...

Dated: Sept 1st, 2010 1:15 EST. It is with great sadness and disappointment that I write this entry. As of some time this morning, all access to the servers have been severed to all but Arabella Steadham and Lonely Bluebird. Neither me, nor any of the other Emerald Developers have the ability to put out releases at this time. Beyond the recent beta 2587, we also cannot certify the safety or validity of any future releases. Now, I made a promise to everyone to disclose the remaining requirements from LL. Those final two requirements that were given to us by LL, was to have a release out by Friday September the 3rd that would not support emkdu or llkdu even if one of the files was present, and that Lonely Bluebird, Skills Hak and Discrete Dreamscape be removed from the project. The alternative was that LL would block the viewer from access to the SecondLife Grid. While Discrete and Skills gracefully stepped down, Lonely refused. A long argument ensued in dev chat and, I created a new dev chat, where most of us discussed how we could remove Lonely from the project, however it failed. Ultimately Lonely has removed access to the servers and has also stated that he is applying for trademark on the Emerald Viewer name. Preventing us from continuing on the project without him. Unless circumstances change, in my opinion, the Emerald Viewer Project is dead. We simply cannot achieve a release by the deadline given to us under the current circumstances. Without access to the server and website, I am forced to make a very difficult decision as I will not allow myself to be held accountable to anything that happens from this day on in regards to Emerald. With that said, I here by officially resign from the Emerald Viewer Project. I no longer have access to post on the modular systems blog, so I have created a temporary personal blog here http://jessicalyons.wordpress.com/ . It will be on this blog where I will post future developments with myself and possibly the remaining Emerald Developers. We are considering, (only considering) the possibility of creating a new viewer, to be on the TPVD, picking up where Emerald left off. IF we do, you will have the same features as Emerald Viewer. The motivation for this would be purely to give the existing loyal Emerald users a TPVP compliant alternative with a fresh future. I would like to thank, all of our dedicated and loyal users for your support through these difficult and confusing times. I would also like to thank our support team, for all of their hard work and relentless dedication to the emerald viewer project and to helping our users. Also to thank our beta testers who helped Emerald viewer be a quality product.

Texas schools to get controversial syllabus

Pax681 Pax681 writes  |  more than 4 years ago

And Thomas Jefferson has been dropped from a list of enlightenment thinkers in the world-history curriculum, despite being one of the Founding Fathers who is credited with developing the idea that church and state should be separate.

now i am Scottish but as i recall a fair few of the founding father were not religious at all and their intent was VERY much to separate church and state after seeing the mess it had helped make in Europe and elsewhere

apparently this is to "redress liberal bias" in the education.
