Ask Slashdot: Tools For Managing Multiple Serial Console Servers?

Pedahzur Re:Conman and Powerman (104 comments)

Fourthed; again, use almost every day. Conman and powerman are great.

Conman: Serial consoles, IMPI serial consoles, write your own wrapper if one doesn't exist.
Powerman: Can control just about everything out there. Again, write your own if it doesn't exist. Can even "manage" power on a VM host. You might have to write your own wrapper though (basically a remote shell that runs virsh commands). I know we have a script here, but I don't think I'm allowed to put it in public. It uses rsh to connect to the VM host (KVM) and then runs virsh domstate for power status, and virsh start/virsh destroy for on and off.

Apple Maps Flaw Sends Drivers Across Airport Runway

Pedahzur Re:The real question is (311 comments)

[Posted an answer...but not showing up. Apologize if a dupe.]

As someone who lives in Fairbanks, I can answer this. The side of the airport to which the user is directed is the general aviation side, thus there is access for businesses and owners of private planes. Thus, much less restricted entry. More details here:

As someone living in Fairbanks, I can answer this. The part of the airport to which the Apple Maps directs the user is the general aviation side of the airport, thus it is pretty open to access, since there are businesses and personal airplanes on that side of the airport. More details here:

To Ballmer, Grabbing iPad's Market Is 'Job One Urgency'

Pedahzur Re:I don't want... (764 comments)

I came here to say, really, I did. Microsoft still doesn't get it: Make a *single* product that works well, across a range of uses, and people will (often) go for it.

Windows Vista and 7 "versions" vs. a single OS X version
Windows Phones vs. a single iPhone

But, that second one kind of illustrates the corner that Microsoft is in: it doesn't really want to go into the hardware business and risk alienating all its partners. Thus, it can't dictate "We'll have one tablet, and this is how it will work." When all you control is the software, you have to play nice with your hardware partners and come out with a range of products.

Bring ODF to Apple's Office Suite

Pedahzur Pedahzur writes  |  more than 7 years ago

Pedahzur writes "The recently released Apple iWork '08 contains does not contain support for ODF (Open Document Format), an ISO standard. There is support, however, for Microsoft's OOXML, which is not yet an ISO standard (and may never be). Hopefully with enough community and customer feedback, Apple could be nudged into including ODF in their next update of iWork. If you'd like to see this happen, add your name to the Apple ODF Petition."

Pedahzur writes "A phishing e-mail I got the other day highlighted scary new phishing technique: using E-Bay's own sign-in server to assist in the phishing. It seems the login screen will redirect to any URL after the sign in procedure. I contacted E-Bay, but received only the boiler plate reply. More details at this blog post."
