PostgreSQL Outperforms MongoDB In New Round of Tests

Per Wigren Re:The tipping point (147 comments)

Postgres-XC's main focus is OLTP workloads. Buzzword: Web Scale.
Postgres-XL's main focus is OLAP workloads. Buzzword: Big Data.
They both borrow code from each other. At some time in the future it's entirely possible that the two will merge.

Which desktop environment do you like the best?

Per Wigren Re:Amiga OS 4.0+ (611 comments)

I have not had the chance to use AmigaOS 4 but my vote to the best desktop environment I have actual experience with would probably go to AmigaOS 3.1 with Directory Opus Magellan in Workbench replacement mode.

Cadillac Unveils Pricier Alternative To Tesla Model S

Per Wigren Fugly (196 comments)

This is one of the ugliest cars I've seen in a while. It looks like they took a nice car and pumped it up like a balloon. It looks short and obese and no rear doors makes it impractical for day-to-day use. The interior looks great though but Tesla Model S has a much much nicer exterior! The car I'm looking forward to is the Fisker Atlantic.

Wrong Fuel Chokes Presidential Limo

Per Wigren Re:Um... (612 comments)

What markus said. My car (European 2012 Honda Civic, not to be mixed up with the quite different American 2012 Honda Civic) has a 150hp/350nm diesel engine and does 0-60 MPH in 8.3 seconds (with about 50 MPG on the highway and 40 MPG in town). It's not sports car performance of course but the oomph is very much comparable to non-sports car gasoline engines. Also, the turbo is almost completely seamless.

Russian EBookseller LitRes Gets Competing EBook Apps Booted From Google Play

Per Wigren Re:Sensational Submission Title is Sensational (145 comments)

This app didn't have anything to do with pirated ebooks. The whole fuzz is about a feature that let users add custom ebook sources instead of restricting it to one or a few pre-approved sources. Then someone found out that some users added pirate sites as sources so they could download pirated ebooks inside the reader app instead of just using the web browser. Then they blame the ebook reader app...

Peugeot Citroen To Introduce Compressed Air Hybrid By 2016

Per Wigren Re:Compressed air. (204 comments)

It doesn't matter how insignificant the modifications are. As long as there are any at all, most stations won't lift a finger until there is an actual (as in not hypothetical) consumer demand for it. Which creates a chicken-and-egg problem because not many people will buy the car (pay the extra price for the new engine vs a proven old petrol/diesel engine) until the filling station coverage is at least 90%. Of course, with political pressure things could happen faster but the core business of car makers like Citroën/Peugeot is to sell cars to people. They do that by designing cars according to the wishes of the majority of those wealthy enough to buy brand new cars.

Peugeot Citroen To Introduce Compressed Air Hybrid By 2016

Per Wigren Re:Compressed air. (204 comments)

Another significant difference is that your solution requires modifying filling stations whereas this hybrid air engine doesn't. Therefore, in the short term, air wins.

Steam For Linux Is Now an Open Beta

Per Wigren Let's hope it's better than the MacOS X client. (353 comments)

I've tried it on OSX a few times but I'm always put off that it's so totally Windows centric. Search for something and most of the results will be Windows-only. It's full of "OMG try this new cool game!!" recommendations and when you click them you find out that it's only available for Windows. I'M RUNNING THE OSX CLIENT SO FUCKING STOP SHOWING ME WINDOWS-ONLY GAMES ALL THE TIME! FUCKING TEASERS! Until the implement a "only show me stuff I can actually use" configuration option I'm not going to bother more with it.

Ask Slashdot: Best File System For Web Hosting?

Per Wigren Re:ext3 (210 comments)

The main point for me to use ext4 over ext3 is that ext3 has broken fsync() behaviour. If you fsync() a single file descriptor on ext3 it will flush the whole filsystem buffer instead of just the dirty blocks of that file descriptor. Terrible for write concurrency, especially with databases.

Ask Slashdot: Best File System For Web Hosting?

Per Wigren Re:ext3 (210 comments)

ext4 and almost all other filesystems, in chorus: You want a guarantee that the data you just wrote is permanently stored even in case of a power failure? Use fsync() you lazy bastard.

PulseAudio seems to be stable now

What that really means is "The ALSA drivers and distributions' default configurations seem to be stable now", much thanks to the hard work of the PulseAudio developers. With good drivers and properly configured, PulseAudio has been stable for a long time.

Mandatory Brake-Override Proposed For All Cars

Per Wigren Re:Just turn off the car? (911 comments)

Those paddles are optional addons to automatic gearboxes so they are still counted as automatic. Even if you have the paddles you still have a fully automatic mode available. I still prefer real manual gearboxes with a clutch pedal though. I've tried my parents new automatic 2012 VW Golf. It's better than manual when driving in town but I feel I have a lot less fine grained control when navigating tight parking lots and similar. Maybe it's just because I'm so used to manual that it's in my spine while I have to actively use my brain when parking an automatic.

Palm Frees up webOS Development

Per Wigren Per Wigren writes  |  more than 5 years ago

Per Wigren (5315) writes "Palm has just announced a number of changes its webOS development platform that should really be welcomed by developers.

From TechCrunch: "The first is that they're allowing developers to fully distribute their apps via the web. What this means is that developers can simply submit their apps to Palm, and Palm will return to them a URL that they can then blog, tweet, do whatever they want to share it. When a person then clicks on that URL they can easily install the app, bypassing any kind of store. And while Palm is providing the URL, it is not going to be reviewing the apps in any way — a clear dig at Apple's approval process.
The next announcement is that Palm is waiving the $99 yearly fee it normally charges to developers to make webOS apps if those apps are going to be open source."

OS news notes that "This moves the webOS much closer to Android territory.""

Per Wigren writes "Some exciting news on Qt Labs' blog this morning! "We have some exciting news we'd like to share with the free software community: Qt will be licensed under the terms of the LGPL version 2.1 with the upcoming Qt 4.5 release, in addition to our standard GPL and commercial licenses. We are also pleased to announce that we are going to open up the Qt source code repository and also make it easier for the community to contribute to Qt." Words cannot describe how good news this is for the Free Software community!"

Per Wigren writes "From James Gosling's blog: "I'm really happy that after months of arguing and analysis, we finally agreed on using the GPL version 2 with the classpath exception as the license for JavaSE. We're also taking the first couple of baby steps in getting actual source code relicensed.""
