Experiment Shows People Exposed To East German Socialism Cheat More

Perl-Pusher Re:let me correct that for you. (619 comments)

If you want a social state then you can't have high immigration and a porous border. A social state works when most citizens are productive. It breaks down when you have more parasites than producers. If you limit immigration then you can absorb the losses and eventually reach a relatively stable economy. But if you allow unfettered immigration, the whole thing begins to collapse and your prison population swells. All of this below comes from wikipedia: A "new anti-immigrant" movement has become apparent in some European countries, especially the Netherlands, Scandinavia, and Switzerland, during the early 21st century. The issue of immigrant crime plays an important role in the political debate in these countries. Denmark According to the figures from Danmarks Statistik, crime rate among refugees and their descendants is 73% higher than for the male population average, even when taking into account their socioeconomic background. A report from Teori- og Metodecentret from 2006 found that seven out of ten young people placed on the secured youth institutions in Denmark are immigrants (with 40 percent of them being refugees) Finland According to official statistics, 21.0% of rapes have been committed by foreigners in Finland.[8] Foreigners comprise 2.2% of the population.[8] In contrast, the rape support helpline Tukinainen reports that 6% of all callers and 11% of 10–20-year-old callers say that the rapist was a foreigner.[9] Additionally, Finnish rapists are more likely to be known personally by the victim, increasing the threshold to report. Furthermore, there are great asymmetries between nationalities of rapists.[10] In Switzerland, 69.7% of prison population had no Swiss citizenship, compared to 22.1% of total resident population (as of 2008). The figure of arrests by residence status is not usually made public. In 1997, when there were for the first time more foreigners than Swiss among the convicts under criminal law (out of a fraction of 20.6% of the total population at the time), a special report was compiled by the Federal Department of Justice and Police (published in 2001) which for the year 1998 found an arrest rate per 1000 adult population of 2.3 for Swiss citizens, 4.2 for legally resident aliens and 32 for asylum seekers. 21% of arrests made concerned individuals with no residence status, who were thus either sans papiers or "crime tourists" without any permanent residence in Switzerland.

Malaysian Passenger Plane Reportedly Shot Down Over Ukraine

Perl-Pusher Re:Ah. (752 comments) A large passenger aircraft Boeing 777, performing a flight between Amsterdam and Kuala Lumpur, was shot down in the eastern part of Ukraine. According to the General Staff of Ukrainian Armed Forces, the airplane was shot down by the Russian Buk missile system as the liner was flying at an altitude of 10,000 meters. Ukraine has no long-range air defence missile systems in this area. The plane was shot down, because the Russian air defence systems was affording protection to Russian mercenaries and terrorists in this area. Ukraine will present the evidence of Russian military involvement into the Boeing crash. The leader of the terrorists Igor Girkin (Strelkov) immediately commented on the airplane catastrophe, believing that it was the Ukrainian jet that crashed down: “In Torez An-26 was shot down, its crashes are lying somewhere near the coal mine “Progress”. We have warned everyone: do not fly in our skies.”

Researchers Find Evidence of How Higgs Particle Imparts Mass

Perl-Pusher Questionable Statistics: (91 comments)

From the article: "Only about one in 100 trillion proton-proton collisions would produce one of these events," said Marc-André Pleier, a physicist at the U.S. Department of Energy's ... "We looked through billions of proton-proton collisions produced at the LHC for a signature of these events—decay products that allow us to infer like Sherlock Holmes what happened in the event." ... Now finalized based on a total of 34 observed events, the measured interaction rate is in good agreement with that predicted by the Standard Model ... If the rate is 1 in 100 Trillion, and they ran "Billions" and got 34 how does this correlate?

Maldives Denies Russian Claims That Secret Service Kidnapped a Politician's Son

Perl-Pusher Re:Consipricy nuts, go! (100 comments)

So nobody in the current US government, or any other government has never before taken credit for the work of others? A politician couldn't survive without the sin of omission. In fact Paul Harvey made a living telling people "the rest of the story".

Seattle Approves $15 Per Hour Minimum Wage

Perl-Pusher Re:Behind the curve (1040 comments)

Stay with me on this, human nature is not linear. A 5% increase in labor cost will result in an excuse to raise prices even more. By not just your employer but every one else. If you make more than minimum wage, say $10 more than the current minimum your going to demand more money too, especially when your cost of living just went up. No mechanism is in place to ensure that all things only rise by 5% in Seattle. The costs will continue to climb until the minimum wage is again unbearable. Meanwhile communities that didn't raise there costs will see a large influx of people. Who will then vote to make where they are now exactly as where they left. Case in point : California has been unwittingly exporting people to Colorado and Idaho in large numbers. Driving up the costs in those areas. So much so that in Colorado parts of it want to to secede from Colorado. Because their representation has also been marginalized.

Seattle Approves $15 Per Hour Minimum Wage

Perl-Pusher Re:You forgot to factor in the supply chain (1040 comments)

Exactly! You can't say with certainty a 5% increase in labor won't cost more. Because every other business you rely on to operate is going to increase their prices. Then the cost of living goes up and everyone is going to demand more to try and maintain their own standard of living. Meanwhile our uninvited 'guests' from our southern border will gladly come in and work for less.

The NSA: Never Not Watching

Perl-Pusher Re:Don't worry - be happy! It's only metadata! (568 comments)

The reason they need the metadata is to index the calls stored on the NSA system. They record everything, its not eavesdropping if you don't listen to it or process it. With the meta data they can tie individuals to time and data stream. Get it now? At anytime if they need decide to listen on a persons conversations, they search using the meta data.

New 'Academic Redshirt' For Engineering Undergrads at UW

Perl-Pusher Re:misuse of the term redshirt (147 comments)

Knowledge means nothing if you can't apply it or measure it. Since they are "low income", I would think the true goal is not being "low income". Who is going to hire someone who didn't get good grades but assures you they know a lot? What I worry more about is that they will dumb down the curriculum so they get a high pass rate and everyone has a feel good moment. Until the newly trained "engineers" can't hack it in the working world. As a general rule, if you give someone something, they won't put as much effort as they do when they are paying for it themselves. It doesn't apply to everyone but for example go to most government subsidized housing and count how many are actually maintaining and caring for the home.

Bradley Manning Pleads Guilty To 10 Charges

Perl-Pusher Re:nice efficiency there (491 comments)

I'm with you there. In every courts marshal proceeding I ever witnessed about 5 in 20 years. The trials combined came a lot swifter than the it took for Virginia to prosecute a child one molestation case. In every single case even the civilian one, it was the legal maneuvering by the defense attorneys that caused the holdups. In my career, I have served as a balif, juror and was head of a correctional custody facility for a while. I have seen the process, it never been a bureaucracy. They are usually handled very very quickly! Speed is never advantageous to a defendant. Not only does time allow the defense better preparation, witnesses memory lapses and its much easier to poke holes in their credibility. If you just want to hang someone a 10 minute trial is all a prosecutor needs.

Bill "The Science Guy" Nye Says Creationism Is Not Appropriate For Children

Perl-Pusher Re:So which field of engineering (1774 comments)

Social engineering, use evolution and AGW as tests to remove undesirables from the species. Then test for things like civil disobedience, denial of anything deemed as fact by a government panel and take their kids to a state run education center. Because scientist now know everything, instead of funding expensive experiments they can be put to work raising children. Since all of the Slashdot crowd are also experts in how children should be raised they can back fill where no PHD's are available.

Why the Middle East Is a Good Place For Women Tech Entrepreneurs

Perl-Pusher Re:Ya know... (229 comments)

No, Lebanon is not your typical Arab or Persian country. Try holding that conference in Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Yemen , Iran, Kuwait, Afghanistan or Pakistan. Or pretty much any country that has an overwhelming Islamic majority. As posted before, Lebanon is nearly 40% Christian.

Superannuated Scientists Still Productive

Perl-Pusher Productivity reduces with Tenure (117 comments)

I have found that once the professor has tenure, his output is reduced to having his name added to papers he didn't have much input on and classes taught by grad students. Age isn't the issue.

US Student Loans Exceed $1 Trillion

Perl-Pusher Re:heh (917 comments)

I have a hard time sympathizing with anyone who has voluntarily taken on large amounts of debt

With almost any decent job these days requiring a 4-year college degree, what the hell do you expect? Unless your parents are upper-class or have had the foresight to save up the money (with no intervening crises to eat it up), your only hope to get anything better than slave wages at some manufacturing plant (that's probably going to China at any minute) is to get a highly-competitive scholarship or take out a student loan. And there are only so many scholarships to go around.

I expect them to try something novel like work for it! I paid for my own education by joining the military and going to school while working. I ended up with 3 degrees and working for NASA. The Air force paid for 70% tuition and I paid for the rest and books. No loans! My parents wouldn't even pay for community college. But guess what I did just fine! I have 2 daughters that I have paid the first two years of college. They are now working and paying for the rest! My oldest daughter has a loan for $5k and graduates next spring. That's called being responsible!
