62% of 16 To 24-Year-Olds Prefer Printed Books Over eBooks

PontifexMaximus It's true for older than 16-24 year olds (331 comments)

Look, I'm in IT. I work with computing systems and stare at screens all day. I read a lot of stuff online. But, I also have over 5K books in my personal library. For me, it's not so much the feel of having a book in my hand as it is the smell of books. There's just something about that that you don't get staring at a display. I'm also one of those people who can't see paying $7 for something I can't hold. It's sort of like blowing cash on Candy Crush Saga. What are you really getting when you buy an ebook? Yes, the author's hard work, but it's the tangibility thing.

Not to mention, who's gonna spend millions on a first edition Ebook? :)

Samsung Ordered To Pay Apple $290M In Patent Case

PontifexMaximus Not just ANY jury... (219 comments)

A SILICON VALLEY jury. Keep that in mind when reading this. The original $450m award that is being retried was also awarded by a Silicon Valley jury, IIRC. But, don't expect Samsung to get any help from that moron in the White House, He's allowed Apple to lobby him for blocking the sale/import of Samsung products and didn't (and won't) enforce the same conditions on Apple.

Apple II DOS Source Code Released

PontifexMaximus DOS? Oh, THAT DOS (211 comments)

Geez, I wonder what that makes me. When I saw that the Apple II DOS source was available my first thought was 'There was a Denial of Service attack for the Apple II?'.

Then I thought, 'You moron, it's Disk Operating System'.

How time flies and acronyms change.

"War Room" Notes Describe IT Chaos At Healthcare.gov

PontifexMaximus Re:Darrell 'Fraud' Issa (346 comments)

Seriously? You really think 4 deaths because of the WH not doing it's job is a 'conspiracy theory'? You think if it was YOUR family murdered by Islamic terrorists that you'd call it a conspiracy theory? You, my friend, are the reason why this country is so screwed. You think the important things are trivial while you rant and rave about how 'outrageous' it is that the Redskins name is still being used.

Get your priorities straight before you start frothing at the mouth about conspiracy theories. Moron.

A Look at the Koch Brothers Dark-Money Network

PontifexMaximus Of course it would (406 comments)

CA being hardcore liberal Democrat would do its damnedest to point out the evil conservatives 'dark money' network, while saying JACK SQUAT about the Democrats and their behind the scenes money making. This is what is killing America, the bias of 'journalists' and the political machinery in government that is determined to stay in power at all costs.

It's funny and frightening how the America is paralleling the Late Roman Empire in it's political maneuvering, graft, corruption and spin doctoring. I am amazed at how idiotically short sighted we are here in America. The old 'it can't happen to us' mindset is a true killer.

Fighting the Number-One Killer In the US With Data

PontifexMaximus Heart attacks are not #1 (121 comments)

Nothing worse than poor statistics to make people think whatever it is the government wants us to think. Heart attacks are not the #1 killer in the US. Come on people, DEATH is the #1 killer in the US.

Geez.

Obama Administration Refuses To Overturn Import Ban On Samsung Products

PontifexMaximus A complete idiot (298 comments)

Is Obama really THAT stupid? I mean seriously. He's continued to prove that he's clueless about virtually everything (except maybe golf). He only became president to en joy the perks of the job without the actual work involved. And you wonder why we're screwed eight ways from Sunday.

Nice work, liberals. Bloody sheep the lot of you.

Red Cross Wants Consequences For Video-Game Mayhem

PontifexMaximus Sure why not.... (288 comments)

...I mean why bother with actually providing consequences for bad behaviour in real life? Let's forgo any effort to discipline people in the real world and teach them proper responsibility in a virtual one. What idiocy. I swear, I'm sick and tired of morons doing everything they can to properly avoid parenting. And that's really what this is about. It's that pathetic liberal attempt to parent kids in lieu of the actual parents being made to do so. And we all know it.

Pitiful.

Health Exchange Sites Crushed By Demand; Shutdown Blanks Other Gov't Sites

PontifexMaximus Overloaded my ass (565 comments)

They weren't overloaded, as is typical with ANY government project, it was half-baked, over-budget (with most going to incompetent pockets), and downright poorly implemented. My dead grandmother can do better than this government can at implementing a decent solution.

Not to mention the regs are, what, 20K pages long? Who the hell can properly implement that? Bloody idiots.

NJ Court: Sending a Text Message To a Driver Could Make You Liable For Crash

PontifexMaximus Dumbassery.... (628 comments)

This is just more proof that America has lost its collective mind. When did personal RESPONSIBILITY and ACCOUNTABILITY become anathema? Seriously, this is just a bloody joke. Why not just say the person texting and driving was a victim not only of the TEXTER but also the Telecom who passed the text along. Shouldn't they also be liable in this case on this basis? Everyone in America is a victim nowadays.

I've had 6 surgeries due to RA in the last 4 years. I should probably sue my parents for passing on bad genes. When will this stupidity end?

The World Remains Five Minutes From Midnight

PontifexMaximus Climate change? Really? (301 comments)

Are we still on this ridiculous crap? Has anyone EVER heard of an interglacial? That's what we're in. We have more long term data to support the increase in temperatures due to the fact we're smack dab in the middle of ice ages that coincides with increased solar activity than 'climate change' due to man's stupidity. Don't get me wrong, I'm a firm believer in mankind being as completely stupid as self-aware beings can be (I mean Obama's dumb ass got voted back in), but I'm a bigger believer in the planet being way more resilient in change than for it to succumb to a couple centuries of us screwing with it.

Ask Slashdot: What Would Real Space Combat Look Like?

PontifexMaximus Night's Dawn Trilogy (892 comments)

Has no one here read Peter F. Hamilton? Personally, the Night's Dawn Trilogy is a pretty good indicator of space combat. (Maybe minus the voidhawks.) Fusion powered nuclear missles with multiple warheads along with electronic warfare pods fired over a broad area to disrupt space as much as possible. Although a direct hit would be nice, it's virtually a total defensive fight. Each one trying not to get hit by flooding the area with junk to hide from the guidance systems. The combat would be over in minutes, it wouldn't be one prolonged battle.

(And I would REALLY love to have a Blackhawk, but that's just me.)

$2,000 Bribe Bought Password To DC P.O. System

PontifexMaximus Well, there's a shocker..... (187 comments)

Our fearless leader appoints an utterly incompetent and corrupt person to lead the most critical part of our infrastructure in this country. Geez. I've never been more ashamed not only to be an American, but also to be in IT. I can't wait for Obama's one term to be up, he's himself very much correct when he said in 2005 that he wasn't capable of doing the job.

iPhone Straining AT&T Network

PontifexMaximus Oh please! (551 comments)

Do ANY of you really believe that? $18 BILLION? I would trust what ATT says any farther than I can throw them. Their network is crap. Their customer service is crap. I'd be willing to bet even without all the damned iPhones their network would still suck. Wanna know why? Because THEY CAN. They (and every other American carrier) can and will spend as little as possible to make our experiences better because we here in America LET THEM. We don't shove the bastards in Washington out of office who ATT have bought. We don't rise up and smite the sons of bitches every time they jack up our rates and we get nothing in return.

Sadly, we deserve every bit of the shitty service and crappy experiences we get. Obviously not enough of us in America give a big enough crap to change it. So why bother crying about it you lazy bastards?

Emergency Government Control of the Internet?

PontifexMaximus One more nail in the coffin.... (853 comments)

not only of our basic freedoms that we FOUGHT and DIED for, but also to our country as a whole. Look back in history and see how 'Empires' in their death throes squeeze more and more, tighten controls more and more to hold onto what is obviously disintegrating.

It's like a fistful of sand, the harder you squeeze, the more that slips through your fingers.

i4i Says OpenOffice Does Not Infringe Like MS Word

PontifexMaximus In other words.... (146 comments)

it's one of two things, either i4i is holding off suing them since the windfall from MS, or they think OpenOffice doesn't have the cash to make the extortion worthwhile.

The Evolution of Multiplayer Games and Online Play

PontifexMaximus Man, what a load of crap. (244 comments)

You know, I'm all about teh intarwebs. But this is stupid. I almost never play video games multiplayer. I play them mainly to GET AWAY from people. And because Windows is the dominant gaming OS my only Windows system isn't connected to my network at all. EA is killing video gaming single handedly. Bastards. Well they can keep their games.

Customer Resource Management For Non-Profits?

PontifexMaximus InfoAtHand (186 comments)

I work for a small non-profit regional ISP in NC. We are a staff of seven supporting over 100K internet customers from government (NOAA is our biggest bandwidth user at ~800Mbps) to education. We have been using InfoAtHand's CRM, which is built from SugarCRM for over a year now and it works great.

Sun To Build World's Biggest App Store Around Java

PontifexMaximus Really? (325 comments)

Sun has done more to alienate it's customer base than any other company out there, except SCO. They wouldn't know a customer if it piddled on their trouser leg.

A Java app store? Seriously? Is there really a need for such a thing? I rarely EVER use Java unless I have to, and then I can probably find a way to do without it.

A community of 1 BILLION? Was this actually said with a straight face?

What a bunch of idiots.

Obama Says 3% of GDP Should Fund Science Research And Development

PontifexMaximus So where exactly will this bounty come from? (753 comments)

I mean seriously? I'm a firm believer in funding more research, don't get me wrong. But where the bloody hell will we get the money? He's already mortgaged my 20X great-grandchildren's future, what is left?

Obama is INSANE. He thinks money grows on trees. Or he knows he's a one term president and doesn't give a rats ass about us after that.

Why can't we put someone in office who's not an incompetent asshole?
