OpenOffice.org To Be Given Back To the Community

PoprocksCk Re:Outcry (219 comments)

Heh, same here. I thought I was the only one. I thought it was just some new library that was suddenly needed for a whole bunch of applications, hence its popularity.

GNOME 2.30, End of the (2.x) Line

PoprocksCk Re:early gnome (276 comments)

Oh man, nostalgia. I loved Gnome 1.4. Particularly gmc (the old file manager.

Not to be a "Nitpicky Sue", but wasn't 1.4 the first release to include Nautilus?

PoprocksCk writes "Pandora, the popular streaming Internet Radio service, will no longer be available to Canadians starting May 16th, due to copyright issues. They state, in an email that was sent to all Canadian listeners, "We began blocking access from almost all countries outside the U.S. last week and had originally hoped to maintain access to Canada. However, it has become clear in the last week that we just haven't been able to make enough progress to continue streaming."

The underlying issue is that in the U.S. there is a federal statute that provides this license for all the music streamed on Pandora, but there is no equivalent license outside the U.S.

Soon-to-be-former Canadian Pandora listeners may want to check out the Pandora blog for updates and for more information as it comes."

Gone!

Well, the journal entries below are pretty much redundant now that my account has been deleted on the server I was using. So don't try to click on the links below.

MP3: Mornings are Kafkaesque (Demo 1)

This is a true story. Wow, this is the first new thing I've written in quite a long time.

MP3: Down by the River (Neil Young cover)

PoprocksCk PoprocksCk writes  |  more than 7 years ago

Just some more filler while I sit around my house failing to write anything new. Not only is this a cover, but it's old! I did it in late November or December... can't remember. Much like a couple other things I recorded but never posted, this is something I listened to again after a while, after having decided not to post it. Well, again, I figure "what the hell," because it has something interesting about it... it's like the mix sounds painfully scewed.

Little Saint Nick (Beach Boys cover)

PoprocksCk PoprocksCk writes  |  more than 7 years ago

Every year during the Christmas holidays (well for the past 2 years anyway), my brother and I have recorded a Christmas song for fun, that we then mix into a humorous music video... The video's a "work in progress," but here's the MP3. If/when the video gets done, the YouTube link will be posted here.

MP3: Red and White

PoprocksCk PoprocksCk writes  |  more than 8 years ago

This is kinda old, actually. I wrote it about 6 months ago but didn't post it because I didn't think it was any good. Well, I listened to it again today and figured I'd just post it anyway, since it's been quite a while since anything's been posted. The only part I kinda like is the harmonica/guitar part.

MP3: I'll Make it Back (Demo 1)

PoprocksCk PoprocksCk writes  |  more than 8 years ago

This is just a straightforward folk song I wrote last night and recorded today. I didn't know I had this kind of optimism in me ;)

MP3: After the Gold Rush (Neil Young cover)

PoprocksCk PoprocksCk writes  |  more than 8 years ago

Another Neil Young cover, "After the Gold Rush" from the album of the same name. I sound out of breath a couple times ;)

I had fun with the ending, as I often like to do.

2nd demo of the same song I posted the other day, this time recorded with electric rather than semi-acoustic guitar.

MP3: Riflehead (Demo 1)

PoprocksCk PoprocksCk writes  |  more than 8 years ago

This is a rather long song I just recorded today. It's 9:21 minutes to be exact. I was trying to imitate someone/something; see if you can guess ;)

MP3: Expansion 11 (Demo 1)

Didn't have much time to record this today, but I wanted to at least bang it out. Another (hopefully better) recording will come soon.

MP3: Autumn (Fall) (Demo 2)

PoprocksCk PoprocksCk writes  |  more than 8 years ago

This is the second demo of 'Autumn (Fall)' which I wrote last year. It's a tad experimental compared to the last rendition.

MP3: Living a Lie (Demo 1)

PoprocksCk PoprocksCk writes  |  more than 8 years ago

This is really more of a song fragment than a song, as it really needs a lot of work and may be reworked entirely at some point.

Oh well. The point of this blog isn't to produce masterpieces, it's just to bang out what's in my head and get it "on paper." All too often I get a riff or tune in my head only to lose it soon afterwards because I didn't record it and forgot about it.

MP3: Major Label Debut (Broken Social Scene cover)

PoprocksCk PoprocksCk writes  |  more than 8 years ago

First entry of the new year. Scrapped last year's stuff in a fit of rage. It's still up on http://www.arklinux.org/~poprocks though.

At any rate, this is a cover of the great BSS's Major Label Debut.
