In UK, Broadband Limits Confuse Nine In Ten Users

PunkOfLinux further evidence (217 comments)

that limited unlimited plans are a bad idea.

Really, just throttle them based on how much theyve used in a given period. everyone wins. consumers keep their service, and providers can cut their bandwidth down a bit.

Internet Co-inventor Vint Cerf Endorses Obama

PunkOfLinux Re:Obama (713 comments)

This country was *founded* by people who could be characterized as terrorists and radicals. Really, I have no problem with radicals. The terrorism thing, yeah, I do have a bit of a problem with the guy in question - but I don't believe in guilt by association. That's like saying because I hang out with a guy who was thought to be a serial killer, I must be bad...

Internet Co-inventor Vint Cerf Endorses Obama

PunkOfLinux Re:Obama (713 comments)

The problem with charging women up to 1200 dollars for a rape exam is that it discourages legitimate claims.

I actually like your idea of how to fix this, but it'll never work. There's too much money involved for common sense to be useful.

Also, wrt your comment "I'm not out raping people and I don't feel that I should have to foot any portion of the bill, through my tax dollars." People who don't have kids in school still pay that part of the tax. The whole reason we have taxes beyond what is necessary to run a skeletal government is to provide for the public good - education, criminal justice, things like that.

I just had another thought of how to get the money back. Let's say 1 out of 10 rapists is caught. That's 12000 dollars that someone has to pay - make the one rapist pay it. Basically, charge them to make up for however much is being spent without result. And, in cases of women crying 'wolf' (claiming rape when it didn't happen) charge the women who make false claims.

Internet Co-inventor Vint Cerf Endorses Obama

PunkOfLinux Re:Barr (713 comments)

I think a lot of people here on slashdot would like to vot for a third party. It's just that if we act sincerely, we end up more fucked than if we act strategically. Nader got, what, half a million votes? If those votes had gone to Gore and then Kerry, we wouldn't have had 8 years of Bushy shitness. Sure, those people might have liked Nader better, but instead of their candidate, or even the next best candidate in their view, we get ... dubya.

US Financial Quagmire Bringing Out the Scammers

PunkOfLinux Re:But what about the real scam? (272 comments)

Yeah, but then your retirement becomes essentially worthless...

It's wrong that we're paying for their mistakes, and we will be paying for that for YEARS to come.

This is not capitalism - by influencing the market (especially so heavily) and giving money to institutions just because they're 'a huge part of the economy' we gave up capitalism. These people fucked up - by the tenets of capitalism, if they can't survive this on their own, LET THEM FAIL. Oh, boo hoo, a tough few years. Better than going even further into debt just to bail out a few rich pricks who made the mistake of doing things where the benefits were far outweighed by the costs and potential risks.

"Iron Man" Release Brings Down Paramount's Servers

It's not the lack of knowledge about Blu-Ray that makes you ignorant. It's the fact that you can't spell 'ignorance'.

Safe Stem Cells Produced From Adult Cells

PunkOfLinux Re:Doesn't matter (207 comments)

I don't get why embryonic stem cells are so 'evil'. The little bastard's already dead; it's RECYCLING!!!

As to the 'book of fairy tales' telling them it's bad, look at the preachers. They claim things like "you examining your faith is the DEVIL!!" and "Only Christians are moral!" Is it really so far-fetched that they would also claim, to their non-bible-reading congregation, that the bible says stem cells are bad?

Also, on a side note: People who act like Israel has some right to their land, and that the Palestinians have no right to that land (ie, just a bunch of whiny bitches who want to take their land by force) really piss me off. According to the bible, which is what they claim to be 'divine proof' that that land belongs ONLY to Israel, the jews TOOK the land from the Palestinians! So grow up, get over it, your pet country doesn't have an intrinsic 'first post!' right to exist.

The Mobile Internet You'll Be Using In 10 Years

PunkOfLinux Re:Drones (137 comments)

Dude, anyone in a plane can 'zero-in' on your house. It's essentially being broadcast. It's not a breach of privacy if someone sees your house; now, if they see something that you have a reasonable expectation of, such as your wife sunbathing in the nude... that's different, and sexy. But it probably won't happen.

Political Viewpoints Linked To Fear

PunkOfLinux Re:Is politics related to desensitizing? (800 comments)

Dude, not everyone who's on welfare is lazy. Besides, it's not right to punish a child for their parent being a fuckwit.

This is a land of opportunity - without some basic assistance, some people will HAVE no opportunity. Look at my girlfriend. Her mother can't work because of a VERY serious back problem; her father won't do a damn thing to help. Without some assistance, she wouldn't be able to do a damn thing with her life.

The Danger of Virtual Server Sprawl

PunkOfLinux PunkOfLinux writes  |  more than 6 years ago

PunkOfLinux writes "Linux Magazine is running an article on the dangers of Virtual Server Sprawl — when you have too many virtual machines. From the article:
Virtual machines: Easy to create, easy to deploy, and easy to spiral out of control; virtual machine sprawl is the new virus in IT data centers and it's increasing your total cost of ownership. Virtual machine sprawl, also referred to as virtual sprawl, is the creation and deployment of virtual machines without proper inventory control. A technology sold as money saving often has the opposite effect when left unchecked.""

Interesting Topics for Papers?

PunkOfLinux PunkOfLinux writes  |  more than 6 years ago

PunkOfLinux writes "In a few weeks, I am required to turn in the statement of intent for my final English paper, laying out what I will write about, how I will go about the actual writing, and why this is needed. Since my professor is allowing us to choose our topics, I have decided I want to write about something in open source. My question now is what specific topic is interesting enough to me to consider writing about. I don't have any great ideas, so I'm turning to the slashdot community. What topics in open source would you like to see explored in more depth?"

Comcast slow to implement child porn restrictions

PunkOfLinux PunkOfLinux writes  |  more than 6 years ago

PunkOfLinux writes "From many sources today comes news that Comcast has been targeted by New York AG Cuomo. From the article: "Comcast 'has continued to drag its heels when it comes to taking every necessary action to eliminate online child porn from the Internet,' Cuomo told Reuters." Comcast issued a statement saying that it plans to work with the Cuomo's office and will eventually sign the code of conduct the Attorney General has proposed. The ISP also points out that it has previously signed an agreement with the Attorney Generals of 48 states to fight child pornography, according to Reuters. However, Cuomo has issued an ultimatum to Comcast, saying the ISP has five days to agree to the terms of the code of conduct before his office will begin pursuing legal recourse."

XBox Live to allow User-Created Games

PunkOfLinux PunkOfLinux writes  |  more than 6 years ago

PunkOfLinux writes "By way of PC Magazine comes new that Microsoft is set to allow user-created content on its XBox Live service. "At the Gamefest 2008 Conference keynote Tuesday, Microsoft chief technology officer Chris Satchell revealed updated plans for the company's XNA player-created games initiative. Now officially titled "Xbox LIVE Community Games," anyone who creates their own games via XNA will be able to not only release them to the public but also to charge money for them. Satchell called the move "a win for both developers and consumers, because this will no doubt act as an incentive for game creators to continue to develop the best, most innovative games for Xbox 360." Universal says Fair Use still counts as infringeme

PunkOfLinux PunkOfLinux writes  |  more than 6 years ago

PunkOfLinux writes "By way of Ars Technica comes news that Universal has essentially given the finger to fair use: "Stephanie Lenz's YouTube video of her tot dancing to an old Prince song was pulled down at the request of Universal last year after the music label said that the clip infringed on its copyright. Not content with simply having Universal retract its claim, Lenz and the Electronic Frontier Foundation are out to put the squeeze on Universal for issuing a bad faith DMCA takedown. But Universal told a judge this week that, even though the clip may in fact be "fair use," it was still "infringement" and therefore the initial takedown notice was made in good faith."

Motoral Sues Ex-Exec for selling trade secrets

PunkOfLinux PunkOfLinux writes  |  more than 6 years ago

PunkOfLinux writes "The Washington Post reports that Motorola has sued an ex-employee for allegedly breaking a non-compete agreement after he took a job at Apple as head of global iPhone sales, and helping lure away two other former Motorola employees to Apple. The lawsuit, filed in an Illinois court on Thursday, reports that Mike Fenger, former SVP of mobile devices for Europe, Middle East and Africa, received "millions of dollars in cash, restricted stock units, and stock options" in exchange for agreeing not to work for a competitor for at least two years after leaving Motorola. Fenger quit the ailing handset maker in March, surfacing at the end of the month at Apple. The suit, as the Wall Street Journal (registration may be required) points out, doesn't actually claim that Fenger took off with specific documents, but that all knowledge he gained while working at Motorola is proprietary information. "He cannot perform his duties for Apple without inevitably disclosing Motorola's trade secrets," said the lawsuit, which is seeking to put a stop to Fenger's career at Apple until March 2010."
