Gas Prices Jump; California Hardest Hit

Ray Re:Gasoline is an Imported Commodity (402 comments)

Although this obviously made a good platform for you to launch a tangential rant, this happens to be a case where supply and demand are at work. There was a pipeline problem and there was an electrical power failure to a refinery, the combination of which has left CA with a short term gasoline supply shortage. It also appears you have no idea that the three QEs are fundamentally different and have had little impact on oil futures prices compared to the essentially negative interest rates now offered on government bonds.

Groupon Not Doing So Well On Wall Street

Ray Re:Show me the money (140 comments)

There is nothing on the horizon for them that can pump up the price short of people (new suckers) thinking they'll get to flip it to someone else.

Congratulations. You've just defined Wall Street in a nutshell.

Malware Is a Disease; Let's Treat It Like One

Ray We're doomed (160 comments)

When you're too stupid to properly name the problem you're trying to address then just BOAKYAG. I doubt there has been any threat from a virus in a decade; today's threats are trojans and worms.

30 Years To Clean Up Fukushima Dai-Ichi

Ray YAMH (342 comments)

The headline is quite misleading. It won't take 30 years to "clean up", it'll take 30 years to scrap the plant. "Clean up" will take, oh, a thousand times as long.

I for one am convinced. If it appears in a blog on Typepad then it must be true.

Why Published Research Findings Are Often False

There's a difference between statistics and repeatability. If you can't produce the same result repeatably on demand then it ain't science.

IE6 Addiction Inhibits Windows 7 Migrations

Ray Surprise, surprise (470 comments)

That's what happens when you write to the browser rather than writing to the standards. We've never had that problem because we write to the standards then tweak to IE.

Study Shows People In Power Make Better Liars

Ray Re:Correlation Causation (265 comments)

For some reason people will always believe what they want to hear.

As Paul Simon famously asserted, "A man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest."

The Sad History and (Possibly) Bright Future of TiVo

Ray Re:TiVo invented timeshifting? (490 comments)

I "time shifted" the audio portion of the Ed Sullivan show the night the Beatles first appeared by setting up my reel-to-reel with a microphone in front of the TV set speaker. Why do that? Well, being (a child of) a good Southern Baptist, I was at church at the time.

The Sad History and (Possibly) Bright Future of TiVo

Ray Re:TiVo invented timeshifting? (490 comments)

Just a quibble (that's what /.'s for, right?). JVC didn't copy Sony. The companies worked together to create working conceptual models and VHS was the first version. Beta was the second, hence the name.

Ray writes "A year or so ago I got my dad a new computer system that included a Canon PX-160 printer/scanner/copier to replace his aging Lexmark with similar capabilities. On my next visit I asked him how the new printer was working and he said the ink was killing him. The cartridges are expensive, they don't have much ink in them and there are no third party or refilled carts for it or apparently any other Canon. It looks like HP and Lexmark are the most likely to have (relatively) inexpensive supplies but what has your experience been with inkjet all-in-ones as far as TCO goes?"

Ray (88211) writes "From the Huffington Post, "John Edwards' '08 website is johnedwards.com. But the campaign didn't buy edwards08.com. Hillary Clinton did. Click on edwards08.com and you end with Hillary Clinton." Wow, looks like Hillary will be able to hold her own against the likes of Nixon and Rove. Of course they tended to do their dirty work against members of the other party. I guess Hillary is taking a more ecumenical approach."
