Ants Build Cheapest Networks

Recovery1 Self Healing Computers in Cars? (108 comments)

Oh good, because it would be great to own an organic device that suddenly develops an ant death spiral while using it. Especially the brain of a car.

Google Officially Brings Voice To Gmail

Recovery1 Re:Next feature? (179 comments)

I stand corrected. I just got looking around at some of the services and I guess they do have incoming faxes. But it looks like you have to pay for that service too.

Google Officially Brings Voice To Gmail

Recovery1 Re:Next feature? (179 comments)

Actually that would be a very smart idea. There is still a lot of people out there who have to keep a landline for faxing. While there is services on the internet that already do faxing, you either have to charge a fee for it or put up with advertisements. Plus there is no inbound faxing on them.

It would be nice to use that Google Voice (which as of writing this is still sadly not available here in Canada) to receive faxes through your phone number and have them pop up as an email with an attachment or something. They already have the infrastructure in place with Google Voice, adding a fax service to it I don't think would be too far of a stretch.

Google Officially Brings Voice To Gmail

Recovery1 Re:encrytion issues (179 comments)

Unfortunately the Google Voice part only works in the United States. You can still make phone calls out with it to Canada but no incoming calls or any of the features in Google Voice. I has a sad :(

Global Warming 'Undeniable,' Report Says

What nonsense. Everyone knows the world is nothing more then a large disk on the back of three elephants riding a tortoise through space. Take your nonsense about the world rotating around the sun elsewhere. ;D

So what. I am a Canadian and I use the American spelling rules like 'center' and 'color'. There is likely Americans down south who like to use British spelling conventions too even though they are American.

Swedish Pirate Party Launches ISP

Sadly, I would buy a used car from one of them before I bought one from a politician. Well, maybe a used boat. Seeing that they're pirates and all.

Retrieving a Stolen Laptop By IP Address Alone?

Recovery1 Re:and plan better for the next time. (765 comments)

Not if they have booting from anything but the hard drive enabled and the bios locked out. You can't remove the CMOS batteries in them anymore to reset things either. It's locked and not even the manufacturer can unlock it so you must ABSOLUTELY NOT lose your password or you have a $1000 paperweight. There is also a hard drive option that will lock up if the hard drive is removed from the laptop. Stick a new hard drive into it and it will not boot. Put the existing hard drive in another machine and it won't unlock unless you supply the password.

Oh, almost forgot. There's already a program out there that you pay $50 subscription to that adds many of the features for laptop recovery into the BIOS. Can't think of the name off the top of my head though.

In short, these new laptops are much more capable of being secured then the generations past. If secured, like mine, some idle thief is not just going to walk up and contaminate my lappy with their slimy XP disk.

What Can Be Done About Security of Debit Cards?

Recovery1 Re:What can be done? Nothing. (511 comments)

Great idea. But my bank doesn't offer me such a system.

In its place though I have a credit card issued from the bank. It is linked to only one account and I have to transfer money into it before I use it for any transactions so otherwise it is mostly empty. Try to withdraw any more then is in it, the transaction is automatically rejected. Seems to work for me so far with online transactions quite well.

Study Shows People In Power Make Better Liars

Recovery1 We call them sociopaths. (265 comments)

They must have missed the study by another university that also reads that sociopaths tend to be in some position of power. Must be easy to miss too because not remembering a lot about the study I couldn't find the link to it with Google either. It still has to be somewhere on this vast web we call the internet. Anyone else happen to read and bookmark it?

What SciFi Should Get the Reboot Treatment Next?

Recovery1 Re:Why not SyFy? (922 comments)

Well said. Return the name Sci-Fi and put back on the shows that made the channel Sci-Fi. While you're at it make some decent branding for the station again. I loved the Sci-Fi channel of 1992 with it's quirky hourglass, that long 30 second fly through the alien tunnel, and FTL Newsfeeds and Sci-Fi Buzz. I hated the Sci-Fi and SyFy of present days with bumpers that leave you with a WTF every time you see them.

The Star Wars Christmas Special Still Exists

This show was so bad that it is what you warn kids about so they will grow up to have sensible careers like toe surgeons and test subjects for clinical trials instead of film makers and TV producers.

What Do You Do When Printers Cost Less Than Ink?

Recovery1 Re:KaBOOM!!! (970 comments)

Oddly enough that really isn't as satisfying as you would think it would be. I took my old monitors and computers out to 'the pit' on some private farm land I owned. Using a shotgun was a little risky because of the potential of those pellets scattering and bouncing back when hitting metal parts. It's also too limited in range to use from a distance and I would rather not die from something as stupid as destroying old equipment. That left longbarrels like rifles. Those bullets just leave holes and do no further damage (Though one of the CRT tubes imploded when they were hit and took out much of the monitor.)

I next tried pouring my equipment with gasoline because of its high combustibility and hoped the bullets would collide with metal and create sparks. It doesn't work that well. Those scenes in the movies where the cars always explode after shooting the gas tanks--not as easy to do in reality as you would think. So imagine trying it on old electronics.

In the end the best two plans are to rig it with explosives or do the good old Office Space scene by taking a baseball bat to the office copier in a field. Not only do you feel more invigorated at letting off some steam at the copier but you will leave feeling much more satisfied. Just be wary of the flyback transformers in these old CRTs. Make sure they have been discharged before you mess with destroying monitors via the Office Space route.

New Research Forecasts Global 6C Increase By End of Century

Recovery1 Re:re Increase or decline? (746 comments)

And you're more qualified then most other people to be able to interpret a basic line graph?

I'm just putting this out there because you slamming a very large and ever growing crowd by calling them ignorant, unqualified and knuckle-dragging. You also go further and tell them their views don't count in this debate. And yet I don't see why I should value your views and opinions any more then I should theirs. What makes you so much better?

Toyotas Suddenly Accelerate; Owners Up In Arms

Recovery1 Re:Same thing happend to Audi a few years ago (1146 comments)

Something else bothering me about the case of the state trooper as well that your comment got me thinking. I mean, he is a state trooper. Don't state troopers have special training to deal with the handling of vehicles in emergency situations? If so wouldn't he have known to put it in neutral? He had enough time to do that because his brother was in the back seat and made a 911 call and from what we know the brakes were pressed so hard that they were burning up. That doesn't happen right away unless you have gone quite a few miles with them applied.
