Home Depot Says Breach Affected 56 Million Cards

Reece400 Re:Canadians already using chip & pin... (80 comments)

My understanding is that with chip + pin you're safer because even if they have your card details they can't use it as readily - however they can still be used in identity theft, etc. While they may be less of a risk than Visa or MC, the Home Depot credit cards used in Canada are all still magstripe.

Online Car Retailer Launching Nation's First Car "Vending Machine"

Reece400 Re:scion (99 comments)

Mod up, Fog light are supposed to low to the ground so they don't light up the fog directly in front of you reducing visibility - brighter main bulbs would just reduce visibility further in thick fog. Sales people have a bad habit of thinking they know more than they really do.

Georgia Cop Issues 800 Tickets To Drivers Texting At Red Lights

Reece400 Re:jerk (1440 comments)

Regardless, you should be paying attention to the road even when stopped, It holds up traffic and causes gridlock when people don't go when the light turns green, and contributes to accidents when the people behind them expect the to go.

Cause of LED Efficiency Droop Finally Revealed

I'd think that since manhole covers are generally cast iron they'd crack before they shrunk or flexed in any noticeable way?

We have a lot of Bluetooth mice here, the Logitech and Dell (made by Logitech) last 3-4 months on average, whereas the Microsoft ones barely make it one month.

Space Shuttle Collides With Bridge In New York

Reece400 Re:It was on a boat (157 comments)

'collides' is one of the more misleading parts - Basically the wing tip bumped into a wood bumper designed for boats, and damaged some protective foam on the space craft's wingtip. FTA- "caused the rub panel foam protective layer of the wingtip of Enterprise to graze the protective wood piling bumpers in the water designed to bumper vessels"

West Virginia Buys $22K Routers With Stimulus, Puts Them In Small Schools

Reece400 Re:they got them with mark up and car like add one (295 comments)

He sounds like he just doesn't understand how this works, He seems to think a $22,000 router would somehow faster or better than a $500 router even if only 4 people are connected to for basic web browsing. FTA: Gianato said putting the same size router in every school was about "equal opportunity." "We wanted to make sure a student in McDowell County had the same opportunities as a student in Kanawha County or anywhere else," he said. "A student in a school of 200 students should have the same opportunity as a student in a school with 2,000 students."

DVDs, Blu-Rays To Show 20-Second Unskippable Govt. Warnings

Reece400 Re:Educate the public? (587 comments)

I have a Phillips DVD player from 7 or 8 years back that works the same, it also goes into region free mode if I punch in a certain sequence on the remote. I suspect the people at Phillips we're a big fan of these requirements, however I haven't been able to find any with these same features recently.

Why Apple's Next Revolution Should Be In Your Car

Reece400 Re:Drink holder (293 comments)

My Oldsmobile Alero had a cup holder right in front of the gear shift - if you put anything larger than a small 12oz cup in it you'd either crush it when you tried putting the vehicle into park or not get that far and end up with your vehicle in reverse. The cup holders in the back seat were semi circle shaped with little rubber flaps that were supposed to hold the cup - they didn't. I don't understand how anyone at GM could have though this was a good idea, but somehow they decided to design it this way anyway. Thinking back, I'm amazed it took as long as it did for GM to go bankrupt.

Mandatory Brake-Override Proposed For All Cars

Reece400 Re:Wait, wtf, NASA again?!? (911 comments)

Have you tried your e-brake for this? A lot of cars with rear drum brakes can barely stop the car at idle let alone full throttle with the e-brake - I've seen people drive around with their e-brake on for several minutes before noticing they forgot to disengage it. Additionally a reasonable percentage of vehicles have a pedal type e-brake which would be even harder for a passenger to reach than the normal brake.

Mandatory Brake-Override Proposed For All Cars

Reece400 Re:Wait, wtf, NASA again?!? (911 comments)

Just as easy with an automatic as well - just push it forward and you're in neutral, you don't need to push the button in for D>N or R>N just to put it into gear. That is as long as there isn't a software problem that prevents the automatic transmission from working of course.

NOAA Study: Radiation From Fukushima Very Dilluted, Seafood Safe

Reece400 Re:Sanity vs. politically motivated scaremongering (267 comments)

That's like saying driving to work and walking to work are both dangerous, I'd better be a hermit. It would be great to be absolutely safe in every way, but it just isn't realistic. Our world is a dangerous place out to get you and there isn't any way you can avoid all danger, all you can do (and do dozens of times each day) is use reasoning to pick the least dangerous options available.

HP To Combine PC, Printer Divisions

Reece400 Re:Makes sense (142 comments)

You can download nice drivers for most printers from their website too that are just the basic driver. I never ever open those cd's they send with the printer anymore, even if you try using device manager to install the drivers off the CD it ends up running an installer and loading a whole slew of stuff.

SFPD Breathalyzer Mistake Puts Hundreds of DUI Convictions In Doubt

Reece400 Mistake? Really?? (498 comments)

"the police officers in charge of testing the 20 breathalyzers used by the Police Department did not carry out any tests on the equipment. Officers instead filled the test forms with numbers that matched the control sample" Wait, that's a mistake? I think headline needs to read "SFPD Breathalyzer test results forged, Puts Hundreds of DUI Convictions In Doubt" I don't see how you can accidentally not do part of your job and buy complete the paperwork that makes it look like you did your job - someone decided to do this, on purpose, and potentially let hundreds of drunk drivers off the hook and/or harm innocent people.

Remastered Star Trek: the Next Generation Blu-ray a Huge Leap Forward

Reece400 Re:FUCK YES (470 comments)

I bought a rather expensive Samsung one which was super buggy, and after 6 months the drive couldn't read discs any more... I managed to get store credit for it which I used towards a sony bluray player and aside from MKV playback over wifi being choppy when the resolution is above 640x480 (and the really nice feature the Samsung had where you could type in the specific minute/second in the movie you wanted to go to rather than fastforwarding/rewinding), it really is better in every way in my opinion.
