Is .NET Relevant to Game Developers?

Why would microsoft put effort into developing attributed programming for VC++ 7, which provides a much easier way to create COM components, if they were intending to kill it immediately? .NET is set up to be the successor of COM, but COM seems to be very much alive in the realm of unmanaged C++.
