In First American TV Interview, Snowden Talks Accountability and Patriotism

RicoX9 Re:Repatriation, yeah right. (389 comments)

I have a fair amount of confidence that if he were freed, we'd read an article about his sad, untimely death within a couple of years. You know, those strange suicides where they shot themselves 3 times in the head. Maybe a tragic car crash. The powers that be have good resources and plenty of plausible deniability.

Aaron Swartz Prosecution Team Claims Online Harassment

RicoX9 Re:Good (429 comments)

They still pursued someone for a victimless non-crime. There are far more worthy targets at the banks and Wall Street. I, for one, don't like my tax dollars being wasted in the meaningless pursuit of conviction rates.

Indiana Nurses Fired After Refusing Flu Shots On Religious Grounds

RicoX9 Re:Good (851 comments)

Religious beliefs are not a valid reason for *anything* other than validating your personal predjudices and making yourself feel better about yourself when you screw up. They are largley a way to shift personal responsibility to the Big Sky Man.

Stay Home When You're Sick!

RicoX9 Re:Uh, nice try (670 comments)

That's how it works where I work (hospital). 90+% of the time, my job function is no different from what I'd be doing telecommuting. Not only that, we have a moratorium on moves/adds/changes on Mondays and Fridays. If I'm not visible while creating heat+CO2, it isn't considered "working".

2 years ago because of the "bad economy" they took away 6 days of PTO. Because we're healthcare, and our management is nearly braindead (maybe just lazy) when it comes to certain things. All employees are treated the same whether clerical or clinical. We have NO normal vacation days (Xmas, Thanksgiving, 4th of July, etc). Used to be you could elect to work on a holiday or not. I used to work a lot of holidays and save the vacation for when I had custody time with my kids. Shortly after they took away the 6 days of PTO, they made 6 holidays mandatory. SO, in the space of less than a year, I'd lost as much as 12 days of vacation time.

We do have a long-term sick bank, but you have to burn 40hrs of PTO before the LTS kicks in. If you don't have 40hrs? No pay for the interim. I have trouble keeping 40 hrs as it is, and almost 700 in LTS.

I had already given up a week when I went to work there (more, since holidays didn't count against me in the prior job). I now have to be very jealous of my days off. Add even newer rules about being "tardy" (how can someone who is salaried and works over 40 hrs/wk and is on call all the time be tardy???). Other rules that get you a write up if you call in sick - you're supposed to go to work and have your manager send you home(?!?!). The list goes on.

I thank the jerkoffs in Washington under Bush's cronyism rule for taking the teeth out of the FLSA. The rule changes here went into effect as the FLSA rules went out. My wife's employer is even worse. Shit that would never have gone on 5-6 yrs ago when salaried IT workers had at least a little protection against being indentured servants. There's a reason corporate profits are at an all-time high. As soon as my kids graduate HS, I'll finally be free to get out of this shithole in the Bible Belt and move somewhere with at least a little sanity and job competition.

TL;DR: Employers take advantage. Employees don't like getting ass-raped for being sick, so they come to work sick.

Is Intel Planning To Kill Enthusiast PCs?

RicoX9 Re:Even if this was true... (1009 comments)

Same bullshit as the GOP. Cater to the religious crowd. This is a marketing gimmick. It will make some otherwise reluctant people a little less reluctant to buy. "It's Christian!".

Personally, I refuse to do business with someone who uses religion to sell their product. Living in the deep south, I see it all the time. "Quality Christian roofing!". Chicken finger place with Jesus fish on everything, Bible quotes all over the walls. You name it.

Brain Scans Show the Impact of Neglect On a Child's Brain Size

RicoX9 Re:What about teh gayz?! (206 comments)

Thank you sir! I did at LEAST as much care of our children as my ex-wife while they were little. After the age of about 18 months, I was doing about 80% of the care. My kids are well-adjusted, straight-A students. I'm tired of the female-centric, men-are-only-dufus-ATM's mentality of today's society.

What's Wrong With American Ninja Warrior?

RicoX9 Re:There must be a winner (349 comments)

This was what I loved about the Japanese show. There was always more than one "winner" regardless of anyone finishing. These people were respected for their ability and effort. Multiple people could win, and all the contestants cheered for each other honestly and sincerely. This is where America has really fallen down.

Monsanto May Have To Repay 10 Years of GM Soya Royalties In Brazil

RicoX9 Re:Remove the yoke of Monsanto! (377 comments)

Our Family Court systems work exactly this way. Whether or not you intended to be a father, by accident or deceit (stealing a sperm-laden condom, for example), the court will force you to pay for the child created. Not only that, the mother only has to name you on the birth certificate to put you on the hook for child support. Even DNA testing is difficult to get submitted and accepted by the courts. They REALLY want someone to blame and make money off of. Yes, make money, since they get matching Federal dollars for the dollars they collect for the mother.

Ultra-Orthodox Jews Rally For a More Kosher Internet

RicoX9 Re:...Or you could just not go to porn sites (430 comments)

Which is why religion, in general, is basically impossible for me to come to terms with. While there are good things, there are SO many things in every religion that incite hatred and fear that I refuse to accept it. Look - the basic tenet of every religion is "Do unto others what you would have done unto you". The Golden Rule. I have yet to find a situation that it doesn't apply. Everything else is window dressing and embellishment by scared old men jealous of their power being taken away. There is no need for "GOD" to be a good person.

Analytic Thinking Can Decrease Religious Belief

RicoX9 Re:Not just analytic... (1258 comments)

So tired of hearing this tripe about Einstein. http://www.godandscience.org/apologetics/einstein.html

"It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly."

Both men were victims of the time and rearing they received. Were they to be brought up in today's world, my best guess is that they'd be like Neal DeGrasse Tyson and/or Richard Dawkins in their belief systems.

Should the FDA Assess Medical Device Defenses Against Hackers?

RicoX9 Expensive (138 comments)

We're already years behind the curve where I work (hospital) because FDA certification costs so much. Yay, because the vendor won't spend another $50K or so, our brand new IV pumps are stuck for eternity with 2.4GHz radios (802.11b/g). Also, because the older model that could manage 4 IV's at a time was so buggy, we're replacing them with the wireless ones that only do 1 IV. Wireless because the drug database updates can be pushed, saving a ton of time putting hands on each device. Now we add a bunch of extra access points on low power to avoid cross-channel interference and spread the load around.

Then there's bedside meds administration. There are some devices with 5GHz radios, but our people don't like them. Great. More load on the shitty 2.4GHz spectrum. Seems like every week there's a new project that "has to have wireless to work".

Lack of Vaccination Sends Babies In Oregon To the Hospital

RicoX9 Re:Autism (1007 comments)

If you live in the US, or a good number of other 1st world countries (Canada, Australia come to mind) - men have say in things to do with home and children only as far as a woman permits it. If she decides she's tired of you, divorce and family court will make sure you are never permitted to invade her prerogative again. All while funding her new single lifestyle with your former home and half your income. And be thankful if she doesn't decide you were "abusive" and have a restraining order sworn out against you so you can't get near your kids anymore. It happens a lot more often than you'd think, to men who did nothing but try to be loving, supporting husbands and fathers.

AT&T Microcell Disassembly; Security Flaws Exposed

RicoX9 Re:Backdoor? (82 comments)

I had one of the earliest T-Mobile wifi phones. They used to use "no minutes used on wifi" as a selling point. It was pretty good about transitioning from wifi->wireless, but not so much the other way. That they are now dinging you for offloading their cell towers seems crappy. Still better than Verizon and AT&T though. Have to pay for the microcell and service.

Man Convicted For Helping Thousands Steal Internet Access

RicoX9 Re:he got rich from fraud (378 comments)

I thought that Sarbanes Oxley (sp?) was put in place precisely for this. Make the executives responsible for the fiscal malfeasance of their underlings. I know my boss's boss's boss was a big believer in things being done properly because he had no intentions of doing time for something he signed being bogus/fraudulent.

State Legislatures Attempt To Limit TSA Searches

RicoX9 Re:Supremacy Clause (601 comments)

Until your Congress-critters start getting voted out for this, and the many other bullshit things they get away with, you won't see change. Push-back at the state level is helpful, but ultimately fairly useless. If she makes herself too much of a squeaky wheel, I'd imagine men in dark suits would be spotted around town shortly before she has a tragic accident.

How the GOP (and the Tea Party) Helped Kill SOPA

RicoX9 Re:I'm glad I support the Republicans (857 comments)

The problem is that when they say they want to "lower taxes for everyone", typically 90+% of the "tax break" goes to the top 1% who can actually afford to pay more taxes.

The "military industrial complex" is a real problem. I'm for a strong defense, don't get me wrong. Paying "contractors" multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars a year is bullshit. They're mercenaries, short and simple. We're using our military to protect the interests of the corporations that are buying our politicians. This seems to be a much stronger trend on the Republican side, though that may be due to the differing rhetoric of the parties.

I think our country would be much better served by a parliamentary-style replacement of our current Congressional mess. Spread the power out amoung more than two parties. Give the vote percentages from each state to presidential candidates, instead of winner-take-all (I know this is state-by-state). Term limits in congress. Lots of things that will never happen because it would be the lawmakers legislating themselves out of a job.
