iPad Progress Report

Ron_Fitzgerald Re:Wi-Fi problems (374 comments)

Here is where I pull my hair out discussing the differences between Windows and MAC... Windows 7 (Microsoft) didn't produce the hardware you are running, only the OS. The most likely cause of a poor signal is hardware related which is not 'Windows 7s' fault. At the very least it is a driver issue which again is the fault of the hardware manufacturer, not 'Windows 7'. You can't compare the two this way and it is explanations like this that confuse and misguide people.

I will also add that Using a Linksys router with 4 year old firmware in a basement (game room) on the other end of the house, my iPhone, iPod touch, Droid Eris, 'Windows XP' laptop and iPad all work without issue.

This is certainly not off topic. Crude, perhaps but AC gets the point across.

Stalker Jailed For Planting Child Porn On a PC

Ron_Fitzgerald Re:Not the end of the story... (368 comments)

One question - Why was the wife or anyone else using the "family PC" not arrested? Or are only males arrested for child porn?

That is a good question. Why should one assume that the wife wasn't the one viewing the footage or more over that the children weren't viewing pornography of other children the same age as them?

Stalker Jailed For Planting Child Porn On a PC

Ron_Fitzgerald Re:The article wasn't clearly written... (368 comments)

I wondered this as well, I am assuming that there was some previous action from Karttunen. This event seems a bit escalated so he had to have done something in the past.

Stalker Jailed For Planting Child Porn On a PC

Ron_Fitzgerald It is too easy! (368 comments)

It's too easy to have someone's life ruined. Even being cleared of charges this person will still have a stigma attached to them. Poor family. To be ripped away like that from your family, your home because some psycho wanted a go at your wife. Investigation wise, they didn't find the hard drive with the man or trace any wrong goings online directly back to him, yet they still charged him with the crime. This seems out of whack to me. Grey area to be sure but to just take the anonymous at their word seems scary.

EA To Charge For Game Demos

Ron_Fitzgerald Re:EA, you've missed the point (313 comments)

I think that USED to be the point of the demo, then somewhere along the line demos were converted to beta versions.

BioShock 2's First DLC Already On Disc

Ron_Fitzgerald Re:Sadly, this is not new practice in the print... (466 comments)

I recently installed circulation software for a local library and discovered along the way that in order to use the printer we already had, we needed to purchase yet another license. This boiled me to no end and it wasn't exactly cheap plus based on a subscription fee which means they will need to renew this license to 'use' a printer.

I don't think this is supposed to be 'great' for consumers. FTFA: “I think the music industry has got a great opportunity to open up completely new revenue streams”

New York Times Site Pop-Up Says Your Computer Is Infected

Ron_Fitzgerald Re:I expected better. (403 comments)

Unfortunately this has nothing to do with New York Times' security and that is the whole problem. New York Times hires an 'ad agency' which is quite a bullshit term in this case if you ask me. They embed some open ended script from said firm and then at that point have no idea what is being displayed. This 'firm' may even rent or sell the embedded space to yet another company so then even the firm has no idea what ad is being displayed. All these automated, unmonitored and unregulated ads on pages are a huge security hole but in the name of profit, who really cares?

Looking For a Link Between Sci-Fi UFOs and UFO Reports

Ron_Fitzgerald Re:Of course (202 comments)

I wholly agree but will look at that from another perspective. I was raised in Boston and moved to northern New Hampshire, I have never seen a moose or a deer in the wild. Being here for 17 years now I am able to pick them out in a wooded field driving down the road or highway at 65 mph just by a glance. Because I am used to seeing these things they are easier to spot. Being able to tell what type of creature is far ahead of me by how it is moving across the road. Take that into account with any media type and you have people that may be used to spotting irregular shapes and movement in the skies. I have never seen a UFO or even known a person who has claimed that they have and as much as I would like to believe that 'we are not alone' in this universe, that is only speculation and I really need to see it for myself. I also have to believe that statistically speaking, out of all the reports and sightings, at least one of them has to be real.

I wish I had the link for you but when Google decided to stop supporting IE6 for YouTube, the page that stated such had links/icons to IE8, Firefox and then Chrome in that order. It really surprised me.

Ad Networks the Laggards In Jackson Traffic Spike

Ron_Fitzgerald Re:Reflows (176 comments)

...This shows the state that news organizations have reached, making money is more important than reporting the news.

I don't ever recall a time when the news wasn't just one more service to trade with you for advertising. When has the news ever been not about making money?

Project Management For Beginners?

Ron_Fitzgerald The Cathedral and the Bazaar (168 comments)

The Cathedral and the Bazaar by Eric S. Raymond
This may be an odd choice for some but I found it a great read for team leaders and project coordinators.

Eric tends to compare himself and his achievements of fetchmail to that of Linus Torvalds and Linux which I personally found distracting topic.
