RNC Calls For Halt To Unconstitutional Surveillance

Rooked_One This will pull undecided votes (523 comments)

no doubt about it. If you voted for obama, and are now in the middle because you pay attention to what's really going on behind big media, you're probably going to be really ready for what the other party has to offer. Especially when you hear on all news sites about how we're turning into a police state silently but surely.

Twitter's Fake Followers Watching IPO Closely

Rooked_One Twitters IPO made me think about IRC (120 comments)

and how you could never make a dime off it - unless i'm just that out of touch. The only people who made money are the ones that got it for the 26 dollar IPO price, and since everyone has been waiting for the next big google, facebook, etc, they simply bought into it without knowing what twitter really is - an app amongst apps that is used by people who generally don't have a lot of money (under 18 yr olds)

in a sense.

The retardlicans created the patriot act so they could do "this and that," but now that the dummycrats have been using it, the rerardlicans think its bad.

Now, sit back and realize the people making all of these decisions are your elected officials.

Rooked_One Its a nice feature to know about (506 comments)

If you open a browser at the beginning of the day and don't close it until the end, you're going to run into cases when you wish you didn't close out a particular tab. ctrl-shit-t undo's closing a tab like ctrl-z undos. Pretty cool.

How Do You Get Better Bug Reports From Users?

Rooked_One Show the reporters of bugs you care and appreciate (205 comments)

... their efforts to reach out to. They are actively trying to help you make your program better. I am not a programmer, however growing up in the pre-nintendo tech days, I know what a bug looks like. I've reported many bugs, and the only response was from Charlie on the Natural Selection (Half-Life mod) team. As much help as he had been in the past when I lost my account info and helped me retrieve it when he was just a one man team, basically, the response back was lacking. I chalked it up to being busy.

If you're telling me you have time to program, but can't take the time to read an email that's bullet-pointed with very specific details and at least respond like a grateful human, then I am just going to say you have way to many e-mails to respond to or you're lying. In the prior, get more help. In the latter, please seek help.

New Drugs Trail Many Old Ones In Effectiveness Against Disease

Rooked_One The root of this problem could also be pointed at (230 comments)

... the patient, or patient's caregiver's.

I can say this from experience, growing up with parents that thought there was a magic pill for everything. I suppose them not having any religion, could have contributed to this, *just* as much as money.

I say this because, again, people want a magic pill. Doctor says "Oh there this new thing we'll put you on." Patient takes it and is unable to google anything, or pre-google, just took it with absolutely no knowledge of what negative side effects it could have. I was personally put on every anti-depressant of the early 90's, and they did a number on me. I guess being diagnosed by a shrink at the age of 12 (this was around 1989) with ADD simply by me looking up when the madman snapped his fingers after giving me a puzzle to complete. I'd look up and say "what?" He would say nothing, then repeat that process. Looking back, I should probably sue the guy as i'm sure the transition of that to methamphetamine later (Rx again) could have only harmed me in my pre-pube days.

Ask Slashdot: Using a Tablet As a Sole Computing Device?

Rooked_One Its OK mister salesman (417 comments)

we realize you've never taken a time out of your trickery, debauchary and entertainment time to learn electronics. Let me put your mind at ease. I've got a friend who didn't, until very recently, get a smartphone let alone know how to use a computer. He has no idea how to create a directory (folder) by simply right clicking. The first time he saw a window being drug across two monitors was like seeing a bootiful woman for the first time. I'm serious - he had half a pack of rolaids in his pants.

You should be able to do all your business with just a tablet. If you need to do something complex, you're at the mercy of finding someone else who knows the device really well, or using that brand new youtube thing to get a tutorial. Be careful using that though, because if you find the dark side of the internet, you won't be able to leave, and you'll lose your 6 million dollar account that hangs on you jumping through a hulu hoop immediately after beer-bonging a six pack.

Best of lucky, and always come back to get unbaised, unsarcastic, and completely true advise

With Pot Legal, Scientists Study Detection of Impaired Drivers

Rooked_One I'm calling Shenanigans here... (608 comments)

So number 1... which is all I really need, is how did they determine half the people pulled over were smoking cannabis? They say in the article they can't.

2 - the numbers are probably skewed in the way of cannabis because the US cannot lose any wars. And the war on drugs, is a war. So this is just a continuation of the scare tactics we've seen all too much.

3 - I know pharmacists. They say at least 50% of the population is on lortabs, percocets, etc... Stuff with hydrocodon and oxycodone. It could be easy to say, that chances are if you're reading this, you have a prescription.

Bottom line, the study is flawed and just a continuation of scare tactics IMVHO.

Why You Can't Build Your Own Smartphone: Patents

Rooked_One but but but... (179 comments)

why would anyone want to stifle the public's innovation?

I get it - you came up with it first... congrats. So instead of me doing it just a slightly different way which falls under your patent (even though I had no knowledge of what you were doing), you want to play monopoly.

And we wonder why your average joe isn't pushing out tons of patents - major companies are. And if mister average joe is a Tesla or Franklin, in these days, they would be put away in a secret compound owned by major company.

Rare Photos: Gnu Crashing a Windows 8 Launch Event

Rooked_One I'd like to add a small change (313 comments)

"...Windows 8 is a downgrade, not an upgrade, because it steals users' freedom, security and privacy."

This may be so, but I think that statement detracts from the fact that windows is starting to make users very ignorant. Windows 7 took away the advanced search. I used to love to be able to search for files largers than 10MB very easily but now I must use third party software to do a very "Windows" function.

I sometimes mourn for the days that when you installed something, its functions went into its own directory. You could very easily find what you're looking for, and modify if possible. This constantly gets stripped down, at least for a few things.

Natural Selection 2 coming soon!!

Rooked_One Rooked_One writes  |  more than 4 years ago

Rooked_One (591287) writes "Natural Selection is a first person shooter where you either choose to be on the marine side, with your standard futuristic military grade equipment, or on the alien side, in which you can (depending on what creature you have gestated into) climb walls, fly, and even devour a marine to digest slowly in your stomach. The sequel was just announced and looks spectacular. The graphics, have come a long way from the half life engine NS1 was on. They have created their own engine (as explained in their FAQ) and it looks a bit like the new Doom series as far as graphics go.

Gamespy held it in great acclaim back in 2002.

However the real genius of the game is how they incorporate RTS into FPS. One player on the marine side chooses to sit in a command chair where he, and he alone controls the growth of the marine base, expanding it, and locking down the "base" (be it an abandoned spaceship or what have you). Think starcraft's view but you have real humans at your disposal to reprimand when they are not doing what they should.

The alien's growth, at least in the first, was accomplished by gestating into a builder unit and creating hives, and defensive towers that would shoot spikes, heal, or even cloak you — I have to say, being cloaked and chomping on a marine when he walked right in front of me had me grinning ear to ear more times than I can count.

So now, while I am not on the dev team, and will make no money with this post, I hope to inform those who were addicted to the first, that the follow up to that cocaine, this new crack will soon arrive. I made my pre-order as soon as I saw they were taking them. Help out this outstanding team of upstarts because you are going to buy the game anyways — might as well get some cool black armor to wear as a bonus for pre-ordering!"

Open Source Alternative for Closed Voting Machines

Rooked_One Rooked_One writes  |  more than 5 years ago

Rooked_One (591287) writes "Listening to NPR, I heard an interview about a voting program called PVOTE that is written in Python and only 500 lines long. From the article : "Pvote is not a complete voting system. It is just the software program that interacts with the voter. Other necessary functions, such as voter registration, ballot preparation, and canvassing, are not part of Pvote. It is especially important that the voter interaction be correct because it is the only part of an election that must take place in private, whereas all other parts of an election can and should be subjected to public oversight and verification."

Rooked_One (591287) writes "NO GAS...On May 15th 2007
I am liking this idea!

Don't pump gas on may 15th

In April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in protest of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight. On May 15th 2007, all Internet users are to not go to a gas station in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places. There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the Internet network, and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up. If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take $2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil company's pockets for just one day!

STICK IT TO THE MAN!!"

First journal entry - Bush's Speech

Rooked_One Rooked_One writes  |  more than 11 years ago Ok, so Mr. Bush's little speech was quite intresting today - let me first say when he started accepting questions, it almost seemed to me like he had a little something something in his ear with someone telling him what to say. Compared to his previous opening speech, he paused quite a bit. So what does that mean? Well, either he DOES have something in his ear, or he is just a slow president.

As far as what he answered about "personal" feelings, it was quite obvious he has personal vendettas against the middle east, most likely steming from his father. As soon as the question was asked his demeanor did a flip and his facial expressions turned from serious to scared, although he tried to hide that with a smile.

Lets think about something.... if you needed resources from a part of the world - if your friends and family depended on this resource - and in the past there had been aid to this part of the world so much that it basically defied "the moral prime directive," what would you do? I personally would make up an excuse to try to take over that part of the world to make it easier for my friends and family to make use of the "resources."

Lets just say that the resource in question is in fact oil. Even though Mr. Bush commented in his state of the union address that he would like to see alternative energy sources, I don't feel he was being completely honest, and HIS best intrests were in his mind. His best intrests would be to take over a region where 80% of the worlds oil comes from, as to keep the oil "regime" that makes up parts of the american culture alive.
