SLot Re:Commie Critter On The Lam? (130 comments)

Correction: Fatherland is Germany and putin's empire is called Mother Russia.

Correction to your Correction:

The Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" (Russian: ) is a state decoration of the Russian Federation. It was instituted on March 2, 1994 by Presidential Decree 442.[1] Until the re-establishment of the Order of St. Andrew in 1998, it was the highest Order of the Russian Federation, though it is still the highest Civilian decoration of the state.

Celebrated Russian Hacker Now In Exile

SLot Re:What's the Kremlin really after, then? (130 comments)

As far as protest leaders go, they meant the people on the maidan from a year or so ago - i.e. Ukranians protesting against Putin's puppet Yanukovich. As for why they prefer VKontakte to Facebook? No idea as I don't use either, but I'm sure there are "reasons".

Durov just has the potential to raise all sorts of hell if he should like to - I don't personally think he has that information, and it this point, the accounts in question have probably long since been deleted. It's more of political in nature than actual hard data that can be gleaned from him. The original article in summary goes into a little more detail on that aspect.

SLot Re:A Ukrainian joke (130 comments)

A better joke:

Two Ukranian men are sitting in Odesa, discussing what is going on in Ukraine over a drink.

Man 1: I stopped speaking Russian.
Man 2: Why? Afraid the Ukranians will beat you?
Man 1: No, that Russians will come to protect me.

The Russian Internet giant Mail.ru said on Tuesday that it had bought the remaining stake in Vkontakte, the country’s largest social network, that it did not already own for $1.47 billion.

Mail.ru is owned by Alisher B. Usmanov.

From http://qz.com/268023/this-puti... :

Usmanov is one of Russian president Vladimir Putin’s “oligarchs,” a group of businessmen with close ties to the Kremlin, and last year Putin awarded him Russia’s highest civilian award, the Order for Service to the Fatherland.

That ought to clear up who is running/owns VKontakte.

Welcome To the 'Sharing Economy'

SLot airbnb experience (153 comments)

I loved it for Zagreb. Had the best flat & owners I'd ever met. Guy even got me a prepaid phone to use while I over there so I could txt/call friends and buy tram tickets. Was super clean, had washer and balcony with rack for drying. Very near to Upper City and main train station. 6 nights for 400 bucks for whole apartment. Will go back, will stay at same place.

London was ok, but far cheaper than hotel. And by far cheaper, I mean *FAR FAR* cheaper.

Anyways, if you do your homework, airbnb isn't a bad thing at all. Helps a lot to know the area and ask plenty of questions of your hosts before you go.

ESA Wants to Probe Uranus

SLot SLot writes  |  more than 3 years ago

SLot (82781) writes "British space scientists are leading plans to send a probe to explore giant ice planet Uranus. They have put forward a detailed proposal to the European Space Agency to launch a joint mission with NASA to the distant world, 1.8 billion miles from the sun. It would give scientists their first close-up views of Uranus since NASA’s Voyager 2 flew past and captured fleeting pictures 25 years ago."

SLot (82781) writes "According to this article, Microsoft is set to announce they will support SuSE!

From the article:
"Microsoft is expected to announce late Thursday that it's partnering with Novell Inc., its longtime rival in the market for computer operating system software, to support Novell's version of Linux, according to a report on the Wall Street Journal's Web site.
The report comes one week after Oracle Chief Executive Larry Ellison said his firm would sell support services to its customers who also use Red Hat's version of Linux — for much less than Red Hat charges for the same service."

Who would have ever thought we would see the day?"
