Ask Slashdot: Best Kit For a Home Media Server?

Sentry23 Re:No reason to change from H.264 (355 comments)

On 2) There are tons of devices that don't support MP4 substitles. (including the Xbox 360)
Why turn this into an anti Sony rant?

Amazon Patents Deducing Religion From Gift Wrap

Sentry23 Religion of giver? (164 comments)

Shouldn't that be the religion of the receiver ?

(Unless it is really unimaginable for Amazon that people give presents across religious and ethnical boundaries.)

Do You Really Need a Smart Phone?

Sentry23 I don't even need a mobile phone (851 comments)

But I still want (and have) a smart phone.
Necessity is not the driver of the smart phone market.

Aging Consoles Find New Life As Video Streamers

Sentry23 Re:Disappointing Experience (255 comments)

Why not use dedicated free (nag/spy/crapware free) console conversion tools like GOTSent or XenonMKV ?
They are tuned for console use. (Xbox360 and PS3).

(disclaimer, I'm author of GOTSent)

Video Game Consoles Are 'Fundamentally Doomed,' Says Lord British

Sentry23 content (374 comments)

If you can get people to pay as much for console games as for tablet/mobile games, maybe, otherwise you're just not getting the return to make 'blockbuster' titles like GTA/GoW/Uncharted etc. (or is that already considered 'hardcore gaming'?)

Technology is not the issue here, it's just cash. If a game costs millions to produce, you're not gambling on a market where you need sell 100M but on a market where 1M units will make you break even. Consoles are not technological wonders, they are content platforms.

PS Vita Specs Announced

Sentry23 Re:Sony, if you want to sell a bunch of these (259 comments)

Or do as they did now, release the dev kit for an affordable price. (1900 Euro seems very affordable for a full dev kit).
It's still quite some money, but if you're serious about development, then such an amount should be easy to recoup.
For that price, I'm even willing to pitch in with some friends to get a kit, without the risk of having your work become useless due to a firmware update.

Why Your Dad's 30-Year-Old Stereo Sounds Better Than Yours

Sentry23 Don't just blame cheap equipment (674 comments)

Sound recording quality has only decreased in general.
Most audio comes at the same sample rate and bit-depth as CD or DAT, while there is no excuse whatsoever why this should not be increased to 192kHz/24bit or higher, and is stored with lossy compression.
What is generally available now in lossless high quality is movies (DTS-MA, and Dolby HD) but hardly any music.

On the other side, the loudness war has further taken quite a few bits out of the available dynamic range of 96 dB (CD quality s/n), decreasing perceived quality even more.
The other point completely missed is the fact the modern receivers have to drive 5,7 or 9 channels in standard AV receivers, compared to the 2 in the old equipment.
(odd point in the article is that it complains about buying specs, but does a simple Wattage comparison against old receivers to make his point they are better..)

So don't just blame cheap equipment, blame the listeners who don't seem to care.

Then again, if nobody cares, is it really a problem ?

Calling BS On Unpaid Internships

Sentry23 And the other side ? (427 comments)

'Here's an intern, since you seem so very busy lately. They need to develop a useful application in 4 months, get to know corporate procedures, learn that an enterprise environment is different then a PC at home (no you can't reboot this server until the maintenance window is up, and you completed a valid change proposal for that utility), and oh yes, they do not get access to passwords so you take of of that, and just show them the ropes in your free time.'

Interns are mostly a waste of both our time if no adequate resources are allocated, management sees them as cheap labour, and interns come with unrealistic expectations.

Sprint Pushes FPS NOVA With Firmware — and Users Can't Remove It

Sentry23 Re:Sony Ericsson does the same thing (182 comments)

I doubt that's SE's doing, since my wife has the same phone without those apps pre-installed in her firmware updates.
A lot of carriers are bundling crapware with mobiles. Sprint is not the only one.
It not only causes issues with the phone sometimes, but also delays firmware updates due to 'carrier customisations'
(Hi Vodafone! Hope you're reading this as well, you @@$**!^ )

Just pick a phone that allows bootloader unlocking and become owner of your phone again.

Neuromancer Movie Deal Moving Forward

Sentry23 Re:NO 3D!!!!!! (334 comments)

Shall we tell them to shoot in black and white or SD as well ?
If you say that 3D sucks, you are just as short sighted as some directors who think that everything in 3D is great.

If the movie is great, seeing it in 3D won't break the story.

However, seeing cyberpunk movies so far.. we'll probably get a 17 year old blond Molly with a soft spot for ponies.
I'm more worried about that side of the movie.

Ask Slashdot: Becoming a Network Administrator?

Sentry23 Don't (480 comments)

This is not a home network.
Peoples work and income depend on that network.
It might look like a great job, but even when it is a mess, it is a working mess now. You won't learn everything you need to know before this thing needs to be in the air, and you run a risk of being run out of town, lynched, or something worse.

If you have unlimited budget, name your self network architect, follow a few nice courses, and hire people who know what they are doing to do your job.

Sony Officially Blames Anonymous For PSN Hack

Sentry23 Summary should contain more: (575 comments)

In the letter there is a part which says:
"We discovered that the intruders had planted a file on one of our Sony Online Entertainment servers named “Anonymous” with the words “We are Legion.”"

It's not much of an evidence in my eyes, but at least it's more then 'because we say so'.

Enlisting Game Hackers Instead of Fighting Them

Sentry23 Semantics, hackers, crackers and coders (118 comments)

I wonder how much of his coders come from the cracking scene, and how much from the demo-scene.
The cracking scene has always had some ties with the demo scene (and in some cases demo groups where the 'legal-branch' of some hacking groups) but cracking PC games does not bring much skill for game coding. (or is x86 assembly code really such a special skill these days?)
