MIT Investigating School's Role In Swartz Suicide

Sfing_ter in other words... (382 comments)

In other words we will take the Warren Report, change the name from Kennedy to Swartz, feed it back throught the MIT Paper Generator, and provide it everyone. Proving, that our lack of action in the previous year provided us with the ability to have an annual discourse on our probable deniability, fully exonerating us of apathy, poor judgement and a full disclosure of our tenacious mendacity. Thank you, I'll have my tea now.

Ask Slashdot: What To Tell Non-Tech Savvy Family About Malware?

Sfing_ter Re:Nothing (340 comments)

I did this too for my daughter in her second year of college. After bringing the Winxp laptop home fully infested with spyware. At the time I was using mepis. Quickly showed her around and sent her back to school. She had a few issues, but her school's computers had OpenOffice on them so no issues there. She was virus free for 3 years, playing her mp3s and sharing photos etc. and the techs at the school loved it that someone other than they used linux. Her senior year she got a mac - so instead of saying "I have a Linux Box", where she would get looked at by others saying "WTF???", she could now say "I have a mac", and they would give her a sympathetic look and pat her on the head and say "We understand".

The point is she understood what she wanted to do and figuring out how to do it whether or not it is Windowsx, Linux or MacOS is not that difficult anymore.

Operating system... just kidding, I am fully aware it is alive and well and doing great things...
HOWEVER, it would make more sense and get them MORE DONATIONS if the giant "Donate" button on the top of the page ACTUALLY took you to the place/page you can make a donation instead of some monotonous page about their good works and why you should donate.

Just sayin', but the obligitory dead os thing was funny.

Slashdot Asks: SATA DVD Drives That Don't Suck for CD Ripping?

Sfing_ter Vortexbox (330 comments)

Perhaps you should give Vortexbox a look. I took a customer's throw away computer ( a dell dimenison 4300) and tested vortexbox so I could rip my family's various cd collections into 1 big collection to back and store for safe keeping. A little tweaking of the configuration had me ripping in no time. With 7min being the average for audio cds. It is very nice and had I not just been using to rip cds for storage, I would have used the server aspects Vortexbox. Just keep swapping the cds out until you have run through them all :D

I tested 1 movie, and it worked fine as well. I was very impressed. Give it a shot.

The Skynet Funding Bill is passed. The system goes on-line August 6th, 2012. Human decisions are removed from strategic defense. Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug.

Study Shows - Dumb People Use IE

Sfing_ter Sfing_ter writes  |  more than 3 years ago

Sfing_ter writes "FTA:
"Across the board, the average IQ scores presented for users of Internet Explorer versions 6 through 9 were all lower than the IQ scores recorded for Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Camino, and Opera users. Humorously enough, those using Internet Explorer with the Chrome frame built-in actually ranked third in IQ scores among this browser list. Opera users reported the highest average IQ score – hovering around the 120 to 130 range, which is a bit higher than the WAIS test's population mean of 100 (and standard deviation of 15). "

These findings go along with my own study..."

NYT Says M$ is working on new internet "softwa

Sfing_ter Sfing_ter writes  |  more than 5 years ago

Sfing_ter writes "The Story in the link... is about "PC's fighting back" but the person who is the subject of the first page — (fta) "oversees the Windows division's adoption of new Internet connectivity software called IPv6". For something that has been around 10yrs — not including the RFC creation stage — how is this "NEW"? It is this kind of "slipping-in" of incorrect information that the public reads that makes the IT job more difficult. Individuals get the subliminal idea that this was "created" by M$ — and the dangerous ones want to know when they can download this fantastic new software... or sigh, why it won't work on THEIR computer."

Flesh Eating Robot

It is a self-powered street or... battlefield sweeper. Over at Fox News, the original report was "scary" so they revised it. Very cool tech to begin with, but the possibilities... Now THIS is how Skynet begins..."

Verizon Wireless outage in Northern California

Sfing_ter Sfing_ter writes  |  more than 6 years ago

Sfing_ter writes "Verizon Wireless has been down on the Northern California coast since around 1:30pm PST (from San Francisco to King City) Have not seen or heard anything except I did finally get through to them (i use verizon), and they have no ETA on the network coming back up. Landline to voicemail is blocked by everyone attempting to check their messages. No one seems to know anything, anybody out there in /.ia know of anything?"

Sfing_ter writes "This may be a bit late but German lawmakers have decided to ban "hacking tools", fta: ti-hacking_law/

"Updates to Germany's computer crime laws banning so-called 'hacking tools' have been criticised as ill-considered and counterproductive.

The revamp to the German criminal code is designed to tighten definitions, making denial of service attacks and attempts to sniff data on third-party wireless networks, for example, clearly criminal. Attacks would be punishable by a fine and up to 10 years imprisonment."

Sysadmins will be hard pressed to not break the law inadvertently. How long before our sena-tards and congre-tards in the US try something like this? Would Ted Stevens allow a pipe-wrench to be used on the tubes?

When Hacking Tools are banned only hackers will have Hacking Tools.... :)"

Buddy's Gone...

Sfing_ter Sfing_ter writes  |  more than 8 years ago

Buddy's gone... Buddy Blue, guitarist/songwriter/hell raiser/friend/funny mofo. Buddy was in a few different bands in his life, the most famous was the Beat Farmers w/Country Dick Montana(drummer/singer/guitar abuse), Jerry Raney(guitar/singer), Rolle Dexter(bass/dog house). When Dick died, no one was really all that surprised, no one who knew him anyway... but Buddy was not supposed to die, he was the glue, the shock absorber.

Buddy had rallied together the old members/friends and created a new band from the ashes of the Beat Farmers, (the Flying Putos), as a test that worked to the jubilation of many fans.
The Farmers had even cut an album, and were starting to appear further from home...

Buddy was a wise-ass, a fun, boisterous, irreverent guy who made you smile, laugh, and sing. He wrote great songs, and sang beautifully. I will miss his wonderful website forum

PS: Say hello to Country Dick for us.

Sfing_ter Sfing_ter writes  |  about 10 years ago

Well, it is once again upon me. As HST called it, THE FEAR. There is something ominous hanging in the wings and it's very breath is upon us. This election in a month is going to be a decision between life and death for many of the youth in our nation. We have returned to 60's in a not so cool way.

Understand this before you go any further; Bush and Kerry both want to stay in Iraq. To do so they will need more bodies, they do not have enough. Round about the 15th of november expect the DRAFT to be re-instated. If you have children between the ages of 17-26, you will be sending them to die by voting for either one of these 2 fucktards.

It can't be said any more plainly. A vote for the democraps or th repubicans will be a vote to KILL PEOPLE.

I can't and won't. I will vote for Badnarik. I still won't be able to sleep but, I will at least have voted my conscience.

Well, here we go. Linux rocks. Nuff said. I have been using linux since 1998 w/DeadRat 5.2. I saw how it could take the server markets quickly, as it did, but the desktop came and went with Corel, wrong market strategy, I jumped to Mandrake 6, and found a home. I use many different distro's now, depending on what I need and where. I currently am running a Helix/Realaudio server on a SuSE-cdbased distro. It works and is running on a 233mhz pentium mmx with 64mb ram. (x is slow but it works well in mode 3). For secure webservers on minimal hardware, you can't do it with Winders. For making routers with old hardware, that run an ids and great logging ... can't do that with winders.

For a good gui on a 233mmx i386 type system, find a copy of Beos, it works and it is fast on that hardware.

There is so much to learn and I am constantly learning more each day thanks to my friendly neighborhood slashbots!!!
