SharpFang (651121) writes "In a series of studies in 2005 and 2006, researchers at the University of Michigan found that when misinformed people, particularly political partisans, were exposed to corrected facts in news stories, they rarely changed their minds. In fact, they often became even more strongly set in their beliefs. Facts, they found, were not curing misinformation. Like an underpowered antibiotic, facts could actually make misinformation even stronger." Link to Original Source top
Battle.net 2.0 is supposed to be the future of online gaming. Instead, it is the antithesis of consumer confidence, a combination of corporate suits who don’t play video games and game designers who can’t do damage control. (...) The company wants a real-time strategy game that appeals to your mom’s bridge club.”
A sad story how corporate politics of total control removed most of what made Starcraft competitive and successful." Link to Original Source

The top contributor paid $3333.33 and the last $100,000 were reached in the last 10 hours of the week of the sale. Meanwhile, Wolfire has lived up to its earlier promise and is currently creating a public source code repository for one of the bundle games — Lugarou, As a reminder to those who liked one of the other bundle games — Penumbra Overture — the bundle includes a discount code that brings the price for a bundle of all the Penumbra trilogy games down to $5 from $20." SharpFang (651121) writes ""White light holograms are a special case of holography in that they only preserve horizontal phase information and do not operate via interference. It is possible to make a white light hologram with macroscopic line spacing although the resolution is extremely low." SharpFang (651121) writes "Several news sources have reported how the Big Brother (this time FBI) exploited the `roving bug' to eavesdrop on conversations happening near cell phones of chosen people by remotely switching the microphone of the phone on. `The "roving bugs" were approved by a judge after the more conventional bugs planted at specified locations were discovered by members of the crime family, who then started to conduct their business dealings in several additional locations, including more restaurants, cars, a doctor's office and public streets.' So: which models of phones are affected by the bug, which ones can be used `whether the phone was powered on or off' and who's gonna write a patch?"
So, we entered our den and settled down. I got down to soldering the bug, while Mike sat in front of the computer and pressed the Power button. "Gonna transfer the cash to high-percentage account, so by the time we return it, we'll have a neat bonus for us." he said, as BIOS messages scrolled by. "Just don't freeze it somewhere. Don't be too greedy." "No sweat. I know my job." he said and began typing his truecrypt password. Monotonous clicking of keys reminded me I'm hungry. "Mike, let's order a pizza." "Fine." he continued typing, as third line of asterisks appeared on the screen. "What flavor?" "Same as always, Ham and Pineapple." "Got it." I dialed the pizza place and placed my order, watching Mike press enter after finishing fifth line of asterisks. Wrong password. "Damn it, I made a typo!" "Look, Mike. Why do you think a password this long will stop anyone from accessing your data? If they want your data, they will put a gun against your head and demand you enter the password!" "HA! That's why it's so long and complicated! You see, recreating it is a complex mnemetic exercise. Something so insignificant as asking about a pizza made me lose my focus and make a mistake. There is NO CHANCE IN HELL that I could ever type this password correctly with a gun against my head!"
I have this bottle of isopropyl alcohol sitting in front of me. $5 for about a liter. It tempts me.
I went on the net to find its toxicity data. And......God the misconceptions.
1) Isopropanol is not wood alcohol. Methanol is. This is an entirely different substance. 2) Isopropanol doesn't kill in 15g dose. First symptoms of intoxication may appear then. 3) Ethanol is not the only alcohol we can metabolize. We can perfectly well metabolize Glycerin and it is pretty much neutral, goes without effects - it is used as sweetener for high-quality vodkas instead of sugar. 4) Isopropanol produces acetone in your liver. OMG THIS WILL KILL YOU! So does Ethanol.
It seems it is slightly stronger than ethanol but pretty much the same in effects. What I am afraid is that it might be denaturated and contain 3rd party poison additives. *shrug* gonna try some some day maybe...
Installed AdBlock on the last of my machines. For one, single reason. Slashdot ads. No, I don't mind the ads themselves. I remember often clicking on the banners on Slashdot. Not once I pondered purchasing stuff from ThinkGeek. I got interested in the "airzooka" toy so much that I built one myself. I understand, source of revenue, subscriptions aren't enough etc. But I'd at least expect keeping the ads servers working. Slashdot pages load for me in 2-5s on hosts with Adblock. But on this one, it was taking a minute or longer. Because the page would stop loading and wait for the ads server. I'd see "looking up a.as-us.falkag.net" indefinitely, while the black screen wouldn't contain any content. The more intrusive the ads, the more probable the users will disable them. If the ads make the content proper completely unavailable, they will be disabled for sure. And screw you, Slashdot. Somehow I don't believe I'd re-enable Slashdot ads once you fix the ads server...
That possibly means some stupid moderator really pissed me off. I know hitting everyone blindly when only one is guilty isn't fair. But it feels gooood!:P
ps. If the comment you've modded was actually VERY brillant and really begged for that moderation, you probably won't get modded "unfair". But anything medicore does. BTW, ALL of "redundant", maybe 90% of "flamebait" and a serious percentage of "troll" get m2ed unfair on regular basis. These, besides unmod2able "overrated" are the most abused moderations anyway. Sometimes a good thought food and discussion starter gets "flamebaited" into oblivion. If you don't want to discuss controversial topics, go to disney.com!
Please oh please, send the samples I've ordered! It's soooo cute! Sooo Sweeeeet! (making all the noises a little kid does when seeing a puppy)
As much as 64 bytes of RAM, 1-2K of program eprom, 64 bytes of data eprom and 8 pins! The package the size of your average optocoupler, this puppy knows quite a few interesting tricks:) Clocks, power monitoring, eeprom writing, watchdog, serial output generator, sleep mode, idle mode and quite a few other goodies!
Eh, I'm so nerdish...
Accepting ideas of application?! (no, not nasally nor into any other body orifice. Just what should the circuit do:)
By the way, you can order your own for free too! And check the FMS7401 too - adds ADC plus several more extras!
Did I mention I got it? They didn't send the ADC version though:(
Okay, there's a little bit of fault on my side. But if there was less spam, it wouldn't happen.
Today I got an email from someone who wanted to order a story. Yes, one of my zooish stories. I never thought anybody would ever think they would be worth money, I always thought myself "nerd for profit, zoo for pleasure". And today this guy writes he read my stories in Mia's anthro stories index, and would like to pay me to write a story.
I didn't have time to answer right there, so I quickly quit Pine, confirmed expunge of all the spam I had marked before and moving read messages to "read" folder, and went to do what I had to do. Later I logged in, checked "Old messages" and the post was nowhere to be found. All the mailing lists were there, 2 Re:'s of a new fan of my stories I was talking with recently and nothing more. Apparently my mind worked like this: No "Re:", no "[" no subject that would really mean it's NOT spam - so it's a spam, marked it for deletion and deleted. I fumbled around a bit. The backup account was down during that time (Thank you ISP) so I didn't get the message backed up. There was no other copy. I have no access to logs. This is an OpenBSD, no such thing as undelete for common users. Lost - permanently.
Good bye, first potential paid story request. Thank you, spammers.
First off, for not entirely known reasons, I haven't seen mod points in some 6 months I think, despite excellent karma leaning on 50pts barrier. Another account may earn default number of mod points though. Sllort isn't entirely right you can't win the game. You just need to define a target. I just defined one. Get +2 karma bonus on a virgin new account in some 3-4 days. I won. But I have some other serious reasons to create a second account. The fact that I admitt that I like mare sex and anyone viewing this account will know so is one of them. Every self-respected nerd should have a high-karma/. account as a point of honor and reason to boast, but not everyone should know I'm into mares, so I need a clean account, my non-zoophile alter-ego one to prove people I -am- a nerd while not hinting them that I'm a zoo.
BTW, I'm up for yet another challenge, trying to restore a deep ghost account to +2:) Preferably with a range of foes. Playing a complete asshole to get there may be a challenge by itself.:)
Why do I have a strange feeling that I get to metamoderate more often than once a day?
I do metamoderate twice a day. About noon and about midnight. I just can't miss my M2 by far or the next one gets lost (i.e I get M2 link at noon, but I moderate at 4PM, I won't get the link at midnight)
Again wasting time instead of writing a program. Rewriting actually. Damned Nokia flash doesn't sync on umount and the filesystem got so badly corrupted my source got erased. All I have left is a stripped down, simplified version that doesn't do optimisation just creates a data set for a plot.
I hate winter. It's too cold to do anything reasonable. I won't even finalise configuring my box with Gentoo I have installed, the room is cold. I just sit in my bed with borrowed laptop on my lap and do stuff. Like play Morrowind. Or play Falcon's Eye (Nethack clone. The Knight is cool, can ride a pony:)
I spent whole day at oscilloscope, measuring signals from optical encoders from the mouse. I might buy an old oscilloscope, it's a cool toy.
Damn it all, I need to get to writing that friggin program! Must be ready by tomorrow! Bye!
This post is a clear and stupid flamebait, but it got me thinking. Classic M2 can do little. I can't hope Taco will implement this - but it can be done. Second class metamoderation- "M2b". No real impact, but could show what people really think and somehow organise it... Everyone can do it.
Rules: Post as AC as comment to moderated message. Title: M2b [metamoderated m1] [your M2b]. Body: Link to this journal entry or any other M2b resource. Optionally your account name (or link) if you don't like anonymity.
Possible alternate metamoderations: -1 Wrong. Applicable only to "same value" metamoderations, i.e. -1 redundant instead of -1 troll or +1 Funny instead of +1 Insightful. (NOT -1 Flamebait instead of +1 Insightful!)
-1 Boring. Applicable to moderating boring stories as Interesting, dull comments up etc. Don't use on Trolls. (use "Troll" instead)
-1 Insightless, -1 Crack. When a troll gets modded up as informative, when an interesting story gets modded down etc. Choose Insightless or Crack depending on how obviously wrong the moderation is. (In case of Insightless you might explain, why. In case of Crack - don't you dare!)
-1 Dundant. Applied to "-1 Redundant" which is not.
+1 Troll, -1 Troll. Feel free to decide if the troll was good or bad. Note you moderate the moderation, not the troll, so -1 goes to a good troll modded "-1", +1 to a bad one.
+1 Brave. Moderation that could easily get M2ed "unfair" just because of "non-standard" thinking. Unpopular (but right) political beliefs modded up, modding up pro-microsoft stories, modding down Linux praising etc. For trolls, use +1/-1 Troll instead.
+1 Funny. When the post by itself isn't funny, but combined with the moderation is. Like post about removing the cooler from Athlon modded as flamebait or one praising someone's penis length as overrated.
+1 Original, +1 Scary. "Who would think to moderate this post That way?". Similar to Wrong, just positive. "Scary" in case the post trying to make a joke, accidentially stated a bad truth and moderator just pointed it out.
i Imaginary. Apply at will. You may use "j" or "sqrt(-1)" if you prefer.
You are free to use other numbers and combine moderations if you feel like this, like: M2b [+1 Insightful] [-1 Crack +2 Funny]
If you want to apply other metamoderations, post them as comments to this entry please.
Now after some medicority and loses, there's a neat series.
One pure +5 Insightful. Pretty, but no big deal. One pure +5 Interesting which caused real avalanche of answers (27), some of them modded +4, +5. And finally, one that doesn't look impressive. +2 Interesting, standard karmawhore +2 level. But it was -1 at one time, and I can't even see the +1 underrated in the score summary that changed its fate. I'm waiting for "comment moderation" message to see what kind of battle was fought over that one. update:

That loser modded me down as "offtopic" and posted that he adds me to his foes because I'm not mature enough to stay on topic. The comment was perfectly on topic (OCCC link from thread about a VERY obfuscated hack) so I got upset for a while. I looked at the guy's profile though and saw an entry saying "I've decided to make as many enemies as possible. Don't take it personally." in his journal. I've also looked at his posts... With attitude like that, he dares to post things like this??? This one has been modded down as troll absolutely fair. It's the people who create this place. People with attitude like his are what pulls this place towards what he wrote about in that post.
He landed on my "friend" list. I'm just full of compassion. He just doesn't get that complaining about things in this world won't get you far if you don't fix them yourself, and fixing the world should be started from fixing yourself. And no, I'm not a christian.
Shopping: Suspended. Plans: Writing that goddamn shitty program and getting to hate it more and more. The code is icky. I need to handle quite big data structures and copy, swap, modify them as often as if they were bits. A single gene of the structure is a damned matrix of about 5x200 of int. The rest is on hold.
Anything interesting? Nope. Uncle visited and we had some arguments. Annoying. Bought a pump for water cooling. I wonder if it will be efficient enough. One thing in plus is that I finally found the lost URL of Equine Archive, the best horsey pr0n site on the net. I wonder if I should put my zoo stories URL in my signature:) Would make some fuss I think:)
