You nuke a city, we nuke a city. I say we start with Mecca. Three times a day, you can kneel, bow, and remember - for 10,000 years.

FCC Says It Will Vote On Net Neutrality In February

ShopMgr Why the big Pipes doesn't want Net Neutrality (81 comments)

They want to charge more! Remember when they wanted to charge for every byte? One big pipe is one cost, a hundred little pipes are individual billings. Imagine them charging for access to every site. If access to a site is too slow, you won't use it. If you want it bad enough you will pay. Sounds like Cable and Satellite TV. They control the Pipe, they control your access. And without their PIpe, how will we get access to the Internet?

Ask Slashdot: Correlation Between Text Editor and Programming Language?

ShopMgr Lighttable (359 comments)

Clojure = LightTable
Java = Eclipse
Emacs = good O/S, lousy editor. I use it for magit, XML and scratch pad. I keep a cheat sheet on my desktop.
Vim = I use it automatically from the command-line to edit files. Also use it as part of a "find" to edit files down in the bowels of file system.

Honorable mentions:
Cursive - Remote debugging with NREPL is to menu intensive.
IntelliJ with Cursive might become my choice for Clojure.

Priceline To Buy OpenTable For $2.6 Billion

ShopMgr Priceline Bids for Meals (43 comments)

New Ads will start appearing on TV. You put in your bid for a meal, they contact the restaurants and fine one willing to take your money. You do not get a choice of time, date or meal, just a guaranteed reservation in a restaurant in your city.

"Feline Herd" Offers Easier Package Management For Emacs

ShopMgr If Java is your only language... (142 comments)

Vi is great if you are editing a line based language.
Eclipse is great if you are editing Java.
For everything else, Emacs.

If you are doing iterative programming, then keep running your JUnit Tests.
So, keep running mvn, make and ant from the Command Line.

If you are doing Functional Programming, then writing code Interactively is the "Cats Ass".
I prefer to write a function and execute it immediately!
No running JUnit Tests iteratively, which means running all the tests.

And yes, some of this is available in Eclipse and IntelliJ, but not as well integrated.

Microsoft's Surface RT Was Doomed From Day One

ShopMgr Re:Slashdot... (442 comments)

No, I hate microsoft! Gates and company bullied and lied and pushed people out of business for their own self-interest. Now he wants to give away the billions he stole to charity. How about giving it back to the people you forced out of business! Modern day Robber Barons with no morals! So, yes we do hate Gates and his legacy! Hopefully, this is just another nail in their coffin! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robber_baron_(industrialist) Robber barons is a derogatory term applied to wealthy and powerful 19th-century American businessmen. By the late 1800s, the term was typically applied to businessmen who used what were considered to be exploitative practices to amass their wealth. These practices included exerting control over national resources, accruing high levels of government influence, paying extremely low wages, squashing competition by acquiring competitors in order to create monopolies and eventually raise prices, and schemes to sell stock at inflated prices to unsuspecting investors in a manner which would eventually destroy the company for which the stock was issued and impoverish investors. The term combines the sense of criminal ("robber") and illegitimate aristocracy (a baron is an illegitimate role in a republic).[1]

Congress Demands Answers From Google Over Google Glass Privacy Concerns

ShopMgr Google Glasses, Tablets, Phones, News Cameras (201 comments)

Same capability, same questions, same answers. Up to the user... Maybe we need to go back to the old laws that require a person holding a lamp to walk in front of every horseless-carriage. It would stop speeding, hit and runs and a lot of accidents. In today's world if you don't want to be recorded, stay home! This has no relationship to the "Street View data collection incident" because that was Google. This is the individual who owns the video device doing the recording. They should be asking how Google plans on stopping their Android Operating System from being used by criminals. And to make sure that their OS isn't being used for illegal activities!!! OMFG

Some Early Adopters Stung By Ubuntu's Karmic Koala

ShopMgr Rhythmbox started skipping... (1231 comments)

Don't know if this was due to the upgrade or to my Virtualbox usage. Anyway, tried Amarok, still can't make sense of the settings, so I went with Banshee. Seems to be fine. Did have one instance where the system went to sleep or it ignored the fancy apple keyboard and wouldn't wake up. So I rebooted.
