Exploiting Wildcards On Linux/Unix

SigmundFloyd s/Linux\/Unix/GNU/ (215 comments)

Article should be called 'Exploiting wildcards on GNU'.

All of the examples in the original document work because GNU software can intersperse options and filenames freely. None of those exploits would work in BSD userland, for example.

The Game Theory of Life

SigmundFloyd Re:Is it me or... (85 comments)

our concept of information theory is a function of the universe it was developed in.

I don't think it needs to look similar to the universe's inner mechanisms just because of that.

Scientists/Actress Say They Were 'Tricked' Into Geocentric Universe Movie

SigmundFloyd Re:where is the controversy? (642 comments)

Only an idiot doesn't realize that, by claiming that the text is a metaphor, one can arbitrarily twist its meaning until it vaguely seems to make sense.

Methinks a moderator needs more coffee, that wasn't offtopic.

Yes it was, at least in part. The details on the old article's topic were completely unnecessary in order to make the point.

Ask Slashdot: Are AdBlock's Days Numbered?

SigmundFloyd Re:AdBlock vs Not Visiting the Site (731 comments)

Once upon a time, Google used to only serve up text based ads. They weren't annoying and didn't try to infect machines with malware.

Yep. And we blocked them all the same.

Ask Slashdot: Are AdBlock's Days Numbered?

SigmundFloyd Re:NoScript (731 comments)

I'm not the person you were replying to, but I - for one - would be more than happy to give up everything that came after the 90s, if I could go back to that decade.

New Study Shows One-Third of Americans Don't Believe In Evolution

SigmundFloyd Re:I believe it (1010 comments)

If God is a metaphor for one or more of:

your community
human nature
the universe
the laws of physics
the workings of random chance,

then you've seen God lots of times.

If God is a metaphor for salted peanuts, I'm eating God right now.

Grooveshark's CEO: "all this growth without paying

SigmundFloyd SigmundFloyd writes  |  more than 2 years ago

SigmundFloyd (994648) writes "Following the news that Universal music filed a million-dollar lawsuit against Grooveshark in relation to alleged cases of copyright infringement, internal emails from the case have been made public, revealing the apparent audacity of Grooveshark business strategy.

Sina Simantob, Grooveshark chairman, wrote in a series of emails in 2009: "[...] we are achieving all this growth without paying a dime to any of the labels...we use the label's songs till we get a 100 (million) uniques, by which time we can tell the labels who is listening to their music, where, and then turn around and charge them for the very data we got from them [...]""
