Soltys (980516) writes "The overseer of the Internet's addressing system rejected for the second time the creation of a ".xxx" top-level domain, supported by some as a way to isolate adult content on the Internet.

Nine board members for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) voted against the proposal on Friday at ICANN's 28th International Public Meeting in Lisbon, Portugal. Five voted in favor, while one member abstained from voting, said Andrew Robertson, an ICANN spokesman."

Soltys writes "The Tibia Linux client has now been released. From the announcement;

"The beta test for the new Tibia Linux client is finally over and we would like to thank all participating players for helping us to test the new client. After a few last bug fixes, the client is ready for the regular game service.

We are happy to announce that the Linux Tibia client is now available and can be downloaded from our website. Please note that it is necessary to download the client completely from our website since there is no patch for the client of the beta version available."

Soltys writes "Google Inc. announced that a Russian university student, Pyotr Mitrichev has won the Global Code Jam competition and was awarded with a $10,000 first prize. Mitrichev topped a field of over 21,000 registered competitors from around the world, a record number for GCJ.

Second place went to Ying Wang of the United States. Another Russian, Andrei Stankevich, came in third. Second through tenth places carry a cash prize of $5,000.

Additional cash prizes went to the other top 100 finalists, who represented 24 different countries. Each finalist was flown to New York this week to compete in the championship round and see firsthand what is happening in the Google New York office. Last year, Marek Cygan of Poland took home the grand prize.

The competition, which began Sept. 5, attracted 21,000 registrants from more than 100 countries. All entrants participated in an initial qualification round, and 1000 of those went on to a two-round competition field. The top 100 scorers from round two of this phase came to Google's New York offices for the finals. All of the programming for any round could be done in Java, C++, C#, Python or VB.NET."

Richard Goering (980516) writes "Basic real-time support is now in the mainline Linux kernel, making it easier for developers to build embedded Linux applications. Embedded developers have long maintained real-time patch sets outside the mainline Linux kernel, but those days may be coming to an end, according to representatives of Linux developer service provider TimeSys Corp. That company announced Thursday (Oct. 12) that basic support for real-time features has been added to the mainline Linux kernel. The new real-time features are available in the Linux 2.6.18 kernel, and will be further extended in future kernel releases. TimeSys, meanwhile, has expanded its LinuxLink developer service to include real-time Linux extensions."
