Heinlein's 'All You Zombies' Now a Sci-Fi Movie Head Trip

SpaceManFlip Re: Friday (254 comments)

Yep I was going to correct that about Friday but you done done it.

Friday was a genetically engineered semi-super-woman, not born the conventional way. Kinda like a pod-person if I remember correctly...

Great book though.

Private Russian Company Proposes Lunar Base

SpaceManFlip Fuck yeah, moonbase! (81 comments)

Why do we not have a moonbase yet, I want to know? I mean the Earth collectively.

Robert Heinlein provided much of the philosophical legwork for how to make it work: Don't worry about building large reinforced airtight structures above ground, but instead bore into the ground and/or use caves that can be sealed up and fortified.

i.e., live IN the moon not ON the moon

So first you send up rockets with tunnel-boring moon machines, then you build hatches over the holes, then you seal up the leaks in the tunnels, then you build whatever you want inside there, with a pressurized atmosphere.

Doppler Radar Used By Police To Determine Home Occupancy

SpaceManFlip Radar Cancer (139 comments)

Working in a field where lots of microwave and other RF radiation are involved, I've had some RF Safety seminars that were enlightening.

Essentially, it's all about the power and proximity that determines the danger. First level of danger is being blinded or having your testicles ruined with non-ionizing radiation. Microwaves can blind you, so I assume radar can also since it's in some of the same RF bands. It's all about power and proximity, again.

The human eyeball has the right size and structure to be resonant with a number of RF frequencies, which leads to the blinding danger I mentioned. Similar size and relative shape of the testicles makes them similarly vulnerable. These parts are endangered first by the molecular-vibration increase that can lead to burns, but blindness and sterility can occur sooner than the pain of burning can be felt.

First thing to do is never stand close in front of a microwave transmitter dish, or a radar gun. They are definitely dangerous.

As for the danger of cancer from those varied non-ionizing radiation sources, it's not certain, but I won't be taking any chances knowing the other proven effects.

Is the Tablet Market In Outright Collapse? Data Suggests Yes

SpaceManFlip No use for a tablet (328 comments)

I just don't want a tablet. I like my laptop just fine, and I can carry it almost anywhere a tablet would go.

I have a 4" screen Android phone, for anything I need to do mobile-wise when I don't carry/have the laptop.

Relative actually gave me a little 7" Android tablet, and I installed a couple of games on it and played a few minutes. Used it about 3-4 times over a year and haven't looked at it in months even.

6 Terabyte Hard Drive Round-Up: WD Red, WD Green and Seagate Enterprise 6TB

SpaceManFlip 6TB on one drive is bad (190 comments)

The concept of storing 6TB on one hard drive just scares me after replacing so many dead drives. Hard drives go bad more often than any other part in general purpose computers.

Would much rather have RAID6 of 5 2TB drives. Basically would rather have the most drives in the biggest RAID that would allow the lowest price per gigabyte...

The Dominant Life Form In the Cosmos Is Probably Superintelligent Robots

SpaceManFlip Re:DMT Machine Elves (391 comments)

Check out this guy's description, from a comment on that link I put above:

Begin Quote: full detailed description of a machine elf met them in the astral plane location messier 82 language sort of like computers but untranslatable to ours. the best thing it translates to is images can learn any languages however and in seconds 360 degree vision in all wavelengths of EM spectrum. made up of tiny nanites. the elf itself is merely only a puppet controlled by a tower that creates them and contains the main entity and if an elf is destroyed physically it really isnt destroyed. if you meet the elf physically its hard to destroy because it regenerates damaged nanites when it has the required amount of energy. it gets it from surroundings can use any form if its enough to supply ex sunlight if it has no available sources it will use its internal source. the "eyes" are tentacle shaped and look more like whiskers. but being shape shifters they can form normal looking eyes but the form i saw them in had sensory tentacles can form its body into any shape. 1000X scarier than the terminator yet is mostly a neutral entity that doesnt have the need to destroy. they travel thru space via astral plane and can go to a location where a tower is made only when a physical copy arrived to build it. thankfully these things live 12 million lightyears away or were fked. either this is all real or im a crazy motherfker with a fked up brain!! / Quote

SpaceManFlip DMT Machine Elves (391 comments)

This robot hypothesis fits in well with what many psychonauts have reported seeing while on a DMT trip:

Army To Launch Spy Blimp Over Maryland

SpaceManFlip Don't worry, no cameras (177 comments)

Don't worry because the government defense contractor says it will have no cameras.

There will be no danger of privacy violations because they said so.

No one in those fields has ever lied to the public before.

Data Center Study Reveals Top 5 SMART Stats That Correlate To Drive Failures

SpaceManFlip Re:The measurements in question: (142 comments)

I read the article to find those "5 Top SMART Stats" they refer to, but I'm replying here because it's the relevant place.

Those 5 SMART stats match up exactly with what I habitually look at on the job monitoring lots of RAID arrays' drives. Those are the stats that tell you if the drive is going bad most often in my experience.

Study Shows How Humans Can Echolocate

SpaceManFlip Re:We echolocate all the time (136 comments)

Really what Stardner is describing is called "hearing"
Or even more accurately "hearing with both ears" because the stereo sound field is processed by the brainworks computrons to sense direction of sounds etc

Microsoft: Start Menu Returns, Windows Free For Small Device OEMs, Cortana Beta

SpaceManFlip Re:Cortana (387 comments)

Halo was originally developed on the Mac, then bought, then ported to console, then ported to PC, then ported to back to Mac. it started as a computer game, and the best graphics/playability are always on the computer (mac or pc) due to mouse aim precision, resolution, etc etc. Consoles are for children.

Microsoft: Start Menu Returns, Windows Free For Small Device OEMs, Cortana Beta

SpaceManFlip Cortana (387 comments)

Cortana was Master Chief's AI companion (the big space marine carrier's AI computer) in the original Halo game. I still hate that Microsoft bought Bungie, and now they're going to milk the shit out of that IP by naming the rip-off of Siri Cortana. I grew up playing the Marathon series on Mac, and when I first played Halo I saw that all the same stuff was there, just fleshed out into awesome 3D so I was like "yay Bungie" and then Microshit shit all over Halo 2 with their Vista "DirectX 10 required" lies etc. Halo 2 worked well on XP with the Vista checks removed. /ramble

OKCupid Warns Off Mozilla Firefox Users Over Gay Rights

SpaceManFlip Boycott California (1482 comments)

If the torch & pitchfork crowds are going after this dude now because he supported CA Prop 8, shouldn't they also call for a boycott of the state of California? You know, since a majority of their voters voted for the infamous Proposition 8 and passed it. I would say that voting for it counts as supporting it, right?

Prototype Volvo Flywheel Tech Uses Car's Wasted Brake Energy

SpaceManFlip electric machines (262 comments)

this concept has been used for awhile in UPS (battery backup) systems with a giant heavy flywheel on a generator-type spindle, which is kept spinning by electric motor power until the power goes off and then the rotating energy is put out into a generator to output AC power to critical electronics

Ask Slashdot: What Games Are You Playing?

SpaceManFlip DayZ Epoch (669 comments)

I've been wasting a ton of time on DayZ Epoch (a mod of the Mod) which is like a combination of the zombie survival MMO-FPS with Minecraft and RPG elements.

You can buy and sell stuff for gold etc, and buy a real estate plot anywhere that's not taken already and build a base from raw materials to hide your valuables in or battle from like a fort. Vehicles are own-able and lockable etc. It is amazeballs.

Comcast To Buy Time Warner Cable In $44.2 Billion All-Stock Deal

SpaceManFlip Re:SEC block? (303 comments)

Wow, neither company has very good coverage on a national scale.
Also, that may be the slowest interactive map I've ever used on the Internet. Our tax dollars at work, creating sub-par web experiences every day.

Who Makes the Best Hard Disk Drives?

SpaceManFlip Re: Seagate Refurbished Replacement Drives (444 comments)

They ARE refurbs - it says so on the drives' label.

I have returned a crapload of the older ones that had the good 5-year warranty, and every single one that has been sent back as a replacement was labeled as a refurbished drive.
