Who's On WhatsApp, and Why?

Spazztastic Re:spam or scam (280 comments)

Look into GroupMe. I use it with friends to keep in touch and it has both a mobile and desktop application. You can do inline photos, youtube videos, etc. As of now I believe it's free.

Routers Pose Biggest Security Threat To Home Networks

Spazztastic Re:PFsense (264 comments)

There's a learning curve with Vyatta but once you catch on it's pretty easy. There's also plenty of guides online that'll get you started and a very friendly community.

I didn't like the web interface of pfSense, and at the time of using it I was still pretty green with the Linux CLI so using that wasn't as much of an option. From what I can see there have been improvements, plus it's also been 7~ years since I used it, so I might give it a shot in a VM.

Routers Pose Biggest Security Threat To Home Networks

Spazztastic Re:PFsense (264 comments)

Thanks, I may look into this. It'll be cheaper less expensive than the one I had originally spec'd out on Newegg.

Routers Pose Biggest Security Threat To Home Networks

Spazztastic Re:PFsense (264 comments)

I really liked pfSense but when I used it long ago it was very buggy. It may be time for me to give it another try. However, if you're familiar with the Cisco IOS CLI, Vyatta is another solution. I plan to set up a small low power box to be my router and only use my Linksys Router/AP combo (flashed with DD-WRT) as an access point. It gives you far more options in terms of management, and if you happen to seed a lot of Linux ISOs you don't have to worry about filling up the memory with the routing table.

Proof Comcast Throttles Netflix

Spazztastic I've seen this too. (8 comments)

This has been going on for a while -- at least a few years -- with youtube. I remember back when entire Youtube videos would actually load (and let you skip back and forth without reloading) I was watching the progress bar take forever on some 720p video. When I jumped on my OpenVPN and refreshed it the video loaded significantly faster.

Comcast has proven time and time again that they are scumbags. Thanks for monopolizing Philadelphia, ya jerks!

Workers Raise First Section of New Chernobyl Shelter

Spazztastic Re:Nuclear... (149 comments)

On top of that it wasn't because of profits that the incident happened. They intentionally disabled multiple safety triggers to perform an experiment and that's what caused it all.

Feds Ban 'Buckyballs' Magnets

Spazztastic Re:First my beloved Viper fighter, now this (820 comments)

I honestly wonder what would happen if you filled a 12ga shotshell with buckyballs and put it through a single shot -- assuming you can even get the shell cambered without it snapping to the receiver.. If I had the cash to burn I'd do it in something smaller like a .410 shotgun.

Paypal Orders Buyer of Violin To Destroy It For a Refund

Spazztastic Re:Sounds Like a Hoax Right Up Until You Read the (362 comments)

You still want to do a visual inspection on anything or have a third party do it. I bought a C&R rifle from a guy in AZ and a friend who lived nearby looked at it and confirmed it's legit and that it was in good shape. Same applies for a guitar since you can easily hide cracks in the neck with a bit of nail polish for a photo or just about any kind of damage that isn't 100% obvious.

Businesses Now Driving "Bring Your Own Device" Trend

Spazztastic Re:also reduces IT costs (232 comments)

If you're on call it makes it easier to carry one phone at a time. The IT department where I work got mad because I had my blackberry forwarding to my personal cell, so we compromised by just using a Google Voice number for my work number. With that I can set hours to accept calls, easier to manage voicemail, and incoming calls. Also means that I can just turn it off when I'm on PTO.

Why So Many Crashes of Bee-Carrying Trucks?

Spazztastic Re:Goldfingerism (255 comments)

Not only that, they do get drug tested regularly. Aside from lots of caffeine, I don't know many who keep their jobs that are using. Sure, there's ways to fake those tests, but most of them are just good guys who work for a living. You get into one accident, even if it's not your fault, and you get blood tested. Some places even do hair sample testing depending on how major of an accident it is. I guarantee the guy who rolled the semi in the story is under a LOT of scrutiny right now.

Hopefully he wasn't doing anything he shouldn't have been, but no matter what every aspect of his life is under a magnifying glass for the trucking company and insurance companies investigation.

Why So Many Crashes of Bee-Carrying Trucks?

Spazztastic Re:Goldfingerism (255 comments)

That's a really poor stereotype. The number of truckers who actually account for the drug using ones is a very small percentage, you just don't hear about your average Joe Sixpack driving his truck from point A to point B without incident because it doesn't make headlines.

WoW To Add Avenue For Real-Money Gold Buying

Spazztastic Re:Ex player. (197 comments)

March '05 I made my account. It was a blast, and you're right, there used to be community. People would talk (or more often flame) in general and you could have a name on your server. Sooner or later that disappeared with cross faction BGs and instances. Up until a couple of patches ago, the guy you just did UBRS with you'll never see again most likely. Even if you did become RealID friends and started queuing together, you still won't get the same friendship as someone on your server.

I log in here and there but I'm debating on just canceling it and putting that $15/mo towards something else, maybe another MMO if I can find the ambition.

Spazztastic (814296) writes "I work for a small company in Pennsylvania that does large amounts of software engineering related to audio and video DSP solutions, and I am planning on designing an off-site backup solution for us. I don't know where to start, so I wanted to ask the /. users what their input should be. We currently do full-backups on tapes that are put into a fire-safe box off-site, but I am feeling that it isn't enough after reading the $38 Billion Dollar goof story. So, what do you suggest we do?"
