Australian Telstra Monopoly Dead

Starayo Re:Now maybe we can get some decent internet limit (100 comments)

500GB download assuming you upload as much as you download...

Furthermore, there is no on or off peak on that internode plan. It's a flat terabyte, anytime.

Add to that the fact that your upload speed will usually be 1/10th or less than your download speed and it doesn't seem too bad unless you're a super heavy user. I manage to burn my way through most or all of 200GB a month pretty easily.

Australian Telstra Monopoly Dead

Starayo Re:Sigh, (100 comments)

Hear, hear. Every time someone tells me the NBN is a waste of money I want to strangle them. But that would not be polite. Thank you for your level-headed and rational argument.

The Binary Code In Canada's Gov-Gen Coat of Arms

Ahahah, that's fantastic.

My mum's actually got a Japanese character tattooed on her shoulder - but she's a PhD specialising in post-WWII Japan and can actually read a bit of Japanese.

Australia Adopts EU's Geographical Indicator System For Wine

Starayo Re:Australian Tokay makes me sad (302 comments)

All the Rutherglen wineries are fantastic. I think I've tried that Tokay, I remember the guy who I talked to when I was tasting it told me about the situation with the naming, I don't recall what the replacement name was but I know it was stupid.

I'm also disappointed at the ban on the name "port". I rarely drink but when I do it's usually port. Next time I feel like a bottle I won't know what to buy!

Huh. How about that.

Kids Who Watch Popeye Cartoons Eat More Vegetables

Starayo It's true! (119 comments)

Hah! I used to use popeye to get my sister to eat her spinach (and other green vegetables)! It was the only reason she'd eat them!

I wonder if it'd still work, she's a teenager now and doesn't eat any bloody vegetables.

New York Times Bans Use of Word "Tweet"

Starayo Re:Thank God (426 comments)

I use twitter, not so much for tweeting as for following others. I find twitter is very useful - not for following friends and family, but for following certain companies, people etc who give small bites of useful/interesting information that lends itself well to the microblogging format.

StarCraft II To Be Released On July 27

Starayo Re:Finally! (220 comments)

I'm going to be pwning noobs until "pwning noobs" is a ridiculously outdated term and then I'll beat my grandkids at whatever game they're playing and I'll go "Yeah! I pwned you little noobs! Old school!" and they'll groan and go "graaaaandpaaaaaa". It'll be awesome.

Is it bad that I want to troll my hypothetical grandkids?

Kid Health Experts Attack Video Game Summer Camp

Starayo Re:Last I checked... (123 comments)

Ahahah, I remember when I thought high school teachers knew basic math as well. Those were the days.

I went to a public school and got anywhere from 1-3 hours homework per class per day. Which is anywhere from 5-15 hours worth. Never did any of it myself, of course, because there were no real consequences for me besides the odd half lunch detention and I aced all tests anyway. Fuck them if they think I'll do their inane work. If I'm doing inane work I'd better be getting paid for it.

Good ol' public schools.

Photos of Chinese Sweatshop Used By Microsoft

Starayo Re:Not Unusual (539 comments)

Exactly. It's normal work culture in China. This is nothing but western spin trying to make Microsoft look like the devil.

I mean, I'm not fond of them either, but.... I was going to say they should stop at outright lies but this is journalism after all.

Self-Destructing USB Stick

Starayo Re:Don't Need One... (223 comments)

I remember an article in, argh, it was either Atomic MPC or PC User, where they put a variety of USB sticks through various tests, submerging them in water, submerging them in coffee, hitting them with various objects, etc, and half the expensive ones died early on and eventually the rest of them did too... Except for the cheapo no-name generic one. Which didn't stop working until they destroyed the USB connector with pliers.

Course this was a few years ago. The brand names have caught up at least a little now. :P
