Ars Technica Inveighs Against Ad Blocking

Stauken Re:Ads suck (1051 comments)

Hell in a lot of cases the fact is that UNBLOCKED ads and visiting the site and using its service still actually costs the content provider money.

Drop in P2P Traffic Attributed to Traffic Shaping

Stauken Re:Rise in First posts attributed to traffic shapi (251 comments)

Fact is: 1. The pirate bay was where 90% of people who use torrents go to get 90% of their torrents. 2. Sold to GGX, presented pay for download model, now in limbo 3. ??? 4. Profit (For Anakata). At any rate, the mass exodus of people from the pirate bay also included a wave of people who probably hung up their pirate boots out of fear that the 'protection' afforded by using an overseas torrent site with a history of giving copyright holders the middle finger (and then putting it on public display) is now gone. Personally, I never understood bittorrent anyway. If your data is worth typically sacrificing your network performance for, then I guess that's you.

I thought 'right to bear arms' meant that everybody had a right to hang a pair of bear arms in their living room. What is this independent force separator from the federal government you speak of?

US Call-Center Jobs — That Pay $100K a Year

Stauken Re:Um, I'm doubtful (362 comments)

More companies should also consider making sure that their hires and business moves pay off with more profit. That's why this isn't occurring as universally as we would like -- it has little to do with whether or not this is decent business strategy and a lot more to do with whether or not it can be decently implemented by the general (a.k.a. stupid) population.

Database Records and "In Plain Sight" Searches

Stauken Re:Is it just me or..... (154 comments)

Trust me, just about nobody does baseball at this point. :) Even if you watch ESPN highlights of baseball, which is the only way to tolerably watch baseball, you see just how empty the majority of the teams stadiums are. Most of them seldom even have a few thousand people in them.

Time Denies Issuing DMCA Over Obama Joker Image

Stauken Re:The guys with Tin Foil Hats maybe? (324 comments)

Have you EVER watched Foxnews? EVER? These people constantly take the republican party and fabricate that they are democrats in captions whenever they have done something to 'disgrace' the republican party. C'mon, get real. It leans in favor of Democrats? Maybe some channels, but that's like saying that the entire world is in favor of a specific race or nationality over the rest. It's simply just not true.

US Fed Gov. Says All Music Downloads Are Theft

Fear of Porn URL Exposure Discourages Firefox 3 Upgrade

Stauken Re:Browse safely (673 comments)

His point was that by revealing this research anybody who is still left using IE is by proxy a pervert intent on hiding their pornography collection. Talk about missing the obvious.

Behind the 4GB Memory Limit In 32-Bit Windows

Stauken Re:I can see the Ciritcal patch comming! (756 comments)

Because OEMs are hacks and will occasionally do things like put versions of Windows that are 32 bits on 64-bit hardware. Very frustrating to unbox a brand new machine w/ a 64 bit processor to find Vista Home loading. On top of that, the way that Vista now handles 'restoring' the hdd means that unless you have all of your drivers handy, a copy of 64 bit vista, and some luck on your side, you are stuck utilizing a 32-bit OS on a 64-bit machine. This spells doom for the average home user, who (typically) wouldn't even be aware of the differences and performance gains that they could have with an upgrade.

If you think about it, it's hard to tell from the picture of a face if someone is transgender or a transvestite. How do we know that's not (and/or was not) a chick? Or a black guy with vitiligo? :)

WordPress Exploit Allows Admin Password Reset

Stauken Re:Clarification (100 comments)

Just because no one has pointed it out, the administrator also likely either has access to the database or knows someone who does. Even if you don't have the ability to utilize the SAME algorithm that Wordpress uses (Which unless they did something special that most PHP programmers don't do, it's most likely just MD5), it's not hard to create an additional user that you DO know the password to and then do UPDATE wp_users SET password=(SELECT password from wp_users where user_id=knownpwid) where user_id=adminid .. well, with whatever the fields would be in wordpress (don't have the database open in front of me). Not the easiest thing in the world, but even if this was some end-all be-all 'lock out the admin' and did not generate a notification, unless the entire database becomes compromised (which would probably be indicative of having bigger problems than a buggy wp) the fix is always available and will work universally.

Yemenis Should Be Incensed At Websense

Stauken Re:First Post for Everywhere Except Yemen (93 comments)

This has little to do with the inherent arguments for and against free speech, and a lot more to do with "Do as I say, not as I do." mentality that Websense took in saying that they will not provide Governments with censoring software and the updates to keep it doing its job. To take this in another direction, here's a nice little analogy for you. It's like Home Depot saying 'We do not sell equipment to people who torture with it" and then turning around and selling a 'waterboarding kit' for $200 to the agency head of the CIA. Not a matter of free speech. It's a matter of "Do as I say, not as I do.", and very straightforward at that.

Chrome OS Designed To Start Microsoft Death Spiral

Stauken Re:Hogwash (817 comments)

This reminds me. I have yet to see a popular, independent calculator application (outside of going to google search and putting in a formula to be solved, or now wolfram alpha). Should we sue MS for a calculator monopoly? What about solitaire? Surely, they're two of the most widely used windows applications and anybody looking to develop an alternative will have a hard time penetrating the ...calculator and solitaire market.

Twitter, Facebook DDoS Attack Targeted One User

Stauken Re:Asymmetrical warfare (205 comments)

What we need is DDoDDoS to counteract such attacks.

I refer you to P = NP for the scalability issues involved in this. :) Botnet a needs to be an order of magnitude smaller than botnet b to affect it, which would just lead to construction of botnet c with another order of magnitude for difference. It honestly becomes very unrealistic after the first round of hack/counterhack.

Comcast the Latest ISP To Try DNS Hijacking

Stauken Re:Serious question (352 comments)

Also, I had not properly grokked browser behavior. You need to type into the address bar in order to get the automatic URL fixing functionality. It doesn't work when you click on links. Before I get flamed, if you're in ff and you clicked the link and see the appropriate response, click your address bar and hit enter, and it will get hijacked :)

Comcast the Latest ISP To Try DNS Hijacking

Stauken Re:Serious question (352 comments)

There is one problem with this. If you had access to a comcast connection it would become immediately apparent. When a web browser encounters an NX Record (say for: asdjoiasjdoiasjdo.com), the default behavior (At least for me in FF 3.5.2) was to AUTOMATICALLY Try it with www.asdjoiasjdoiasjdo.com..bam. Hijacked. So, if you try an internal webmail VPN host, or try to do anything webbased with a windows domain host (eg. http://testsystem/), firefox would fail to find the dns record, append .com, fail, and then append www...bam... freakin hijacked again.. Comcast customers with firefox (and i'm assuming IE has most of this default behavior, probably safari and opera as well), try it for yourself. http://abosjdoiqjwodijioqwjdo/
