Ecuadorian Navy Rescues Bezos After Kidney Stone Attack

TDyl It must be nice... (190 comments)

to live in a country where no-one gives a damn about anyone outside of their family or tiny social groups. As humans we have a duty to protect the weak and disadvantaged - and before you go off on one I am slightly right of Genghis Khan. If we cannot protect and help those that suffer more than we do, then how can we call ourselves human? We have to work for the benefit of all, not just shareholders and VC's/hedgefunds. Societal harmony and protection should be a minimum for anyone. The arrogance and plain ignorance of certain shards of corporate American life (which filters down into how the differing sections of society view each other) is an anathema to trying to advance our civilisation and improving the lot of the majority of our species. The sci-fi books I read (mainly the golden age) as I grew up in the 60's/70's presented a much nicer/better ideal of our world than that the politicians, preachers and flaming libertarian and republicans idiots are trying to form. If we as a global community of - hopefully - right-minded and socially aware techies can change things for the better (Farcebook, Goggle, Twatter etc, I'm looking at you) then we ought to; we should. Sorry for the rant and I'll probably regret it tomorrow. Chris

Should the Next 'Doctor Who' Be a Woman?

TDyl Re:How about a new SF series then? (772 comments)

Agreed about Tom Baker. For the female - they could just spin-off a new show featuring the Dr's daughter - I'd follow her anywhere ;)

Schneier Has Something Good To Say About Airport Security

TDyl Winter Sports (226 comments)

This system has been in use on some winter sports (bob, skeleton etc) for some years now and has always seemed fair to me. Once the run is over the competitor hits a tit and gets either a red or green light to see if they have to go for testing; a damn good idea.

British Co. Makes Petrol From Air

TDyl TDyl writes  |  more than 2 years ago

TDyl (862130) writes "A small British company has produced the first "petrol from air" using a revolutionary technology that promises to solve the energy crisis as well as helping to curb global warming by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Air Fuel Synthesis in Stockton-on-Tees has produced five litres of petrol since August when it switched on a small refinery that manufactures gasoline from carbon dioxide and water vapour.

The company hopes that within two years it will build a larger, commercial-scale plant capable of producing a ton of petrol a day. It also plans to produce green aviation fuel to make airline travel more carbon-neutral."

Gamer wins appeal over pirate chip kit

TDyl TDyl writes  |  more than 6 years ago

TDyl writes "I read this story in my local rag which hasn't published it on their website yet. Last year Higgs was found guilty of selling console mod chips (26 offences under the British Copyright, Designs and Patents Act (2003)). Now the Appeals Court judges have overturned the verdict — they'll give their reasons at a later date — but their decision could set a precedent for the video games industry in Britain, if selling a modcip is not deemed to be illegal."
