Man Pays $200,000 To Save Fake Online Girlfriend

Terminal Saint Re:Can this be real? (464 comments)

Your mistake is assuming that rich people are rich because they work hard. The majority of the time, rich people are rich because their parents were rich.

Possibly, but it seems odd that they would all see the same thing in the same position acting in the same way.

Ball Lightning Caused By Magnetic Hallucinations

Terminal Saint Re:Doesn't explain... (269 comments)

Indeed. Heck, my great grandmother used to tell the story of the time ball lightning broke the living room window, did a circle around the room and went back out, leaving scorch marks on the ceiling. But then, it's a story from the great grandmother, so take it for what it's worth.

Steve Jobs Recommends Android For Fans of Porn

Terminal Saint Re:American pornophobia (909 comments)

It's a valid fear. I know someone who asked her father about sex she was about 6 or 7. Her father, not being ashamed of the biological process, gave her a frank and straightforward explanation. Being a child, she then told some of her classmates about it and next thing you know: the parents were getting a visit from CPS.

Scientists Turn T-Shirts Into Body Armor

Terminal Saint Re:How elastic? (213 comments)

Penetration obviously isn't ideal, but having the bullet contained by the shirt would still be a preferable outcome to outright penetration. One of the reasons the Mongols wore silk armor was that when struck by an arrow, the arrow would often fail to pierce the silk. This made removing arrows much easier and cleaner, which meant less downtime for wounded fighters.

Indian Military Hopes to Weaponize the Searing "Ghost Pepper"

Terminal Saint Re:OK ... (267 comments)

The problem with Scoville units(and the reason they're NOT a universally accepted measure of chili hotness) is that it's a subjective measure. It's based on taste testing. American Spice Trade Association pungency units are a better measure, as they're determined using high performance liquid chromatography.

That's the conclusion we'd like them to draw. Sadly I expect it's more likely their conclusion would be along the lines of "The PC is no longer a profitable platform."

Broadband Rights & the Killer App of 1900

Terminal Saint Re:If you want broadband, live where it's availabl (565 comments)

No to dispute your main point, but you make it sound as though everyone who lives in a rural area does so as a luxury. Cost of living actually tends to be a bit lower in rural areas, based on the studies I could dig up. Not everyone living in the country has 100 acres and a manor house.

Which Breakthrough Is Most Likely?

Terminal Saint Re:OK, let's see... (903 comments)

>Discovery of aliens: always possible. But subject to the near-impossibility of FTL or time travel, it seems extremely unlikely. It doesn't specify intelligent alien life. We might get lucky as close as Mars.

Vacuum Leaks Lead To Another LHC Delay

Terminal Saint Re:Is that first thing we need ? (224 comments)

The point of the LHC is to make a black hole. Physicists claim it will dissipate quickly enough from the Hawking radiation vs. whether it will begin snowballing out of control. NOT whether it will create one. You don't even know what you're talking about.

No, you don't know what you're talking about.
The point of the LHC is to demonstrate the existence of the Higgs boson. Any microscopic black holes created are purely incidental.

German Gov To Ban Paintballing After Shooting

Terminal Saint Re:Really Germany? (580 comments)

There are plenty of examples of people having been shot(even with assault and battle rifles) and failing to notice until later. Adrenaline is a powerful thing and it's better to teach a soldier to fight through having been shot. A paintball at close range hurts a lot more than a MILES laser, and is still a useful tool toward that objective.

An FBI wounding study found that even with their heart destroyed, a suitably determined individual can preform voluntary actions for 10-15 seconds. Furthermore, it reached the conclusion that often a combatant drops out of the fight not because they'd been physiologically rendered unable to fight, but because they saw how bad a gunshot wound looked and psychologically gave up.

Stonehenge a Cemetery for Nobles

Terminal Saint Terminal Saint writes  |  more than 6 years ago

Terminal Saint (668751) writes "Using radiocarbon dating, archaeologists Mike Parker-Pearson and Andrew Chamberlain have found that the legendary Stonehenge was used as a burial site in ancient times.
Remains range from 3000 B.C. to 500 years later in 2500 B.C.(the first from the early days as a ditch and bank monument to later remains after the iconic stones went up). It was previously thought that burials only occurred during a 100 year period."
