Blender Foundation Video Taken Down On YouTube For Copyright Violation

TheSpoom Re:You made this? (306 comments)

And to be fair to Sony, this is almost certainly the result of an automated scanning system that identified what it thought was Sony content, and blocked it per Sony's policy on their own content. Whether or not that should be a valid way of protecting one's IP is a separate question, but I'm 99% certain there's no malice on Sony's part here, and it will likely be resolved within a day or two.

The Next Keurig Will Make Your Coffee With a Dash of "DRM"

TheSpoom Tassimo Did It (769 comments)

This has been done. Tassimo has barcodes on their 'pods' that tell the system how to brew that particular pod. It lets the system have greater variety, e.g. there are latte, cappuccino, cocoa pods.

It was quickly reverse engineered on the internet.

Moral: Unless this thing has a mandatory internet connection, it's not going to stop anything.

GOP Bill To Outlaw EPA 'Secret Science' That Is Not Transparent, Reproducible

TheSpoom Re: "Not Reproduclibe" (618 comments)

That's the point. I bet the open access requirement is also harder to reach than it seems.

Another bill that looks helpful on the surface but really just supports their agenda.

Former Microsoft Exec To Lead HealthCare.gov

TheSpoom Re:I accept your surrender (214 comments)

Ah, Americans talking about Canadian healthcare. It's like hearing from an old, crazy friend.

(For the record, Canadian healthcare is awesome. Consider any metrics from Americans who haven't lived there to be very likely cherry-picked to support their ideology.)

TheSpoom Can we just have single payer yet? (214 comments)

Please? How much more complicated do we have to make it before we do what the rest of the civilized world is doing?

I know Americans like to be different but it's gone too far.

The Quest To Build Xbox One and PS4 Emulators

TheSpoom The hardest part will be breaking the encryption (227 comments)

Games, both downloaded and on optical media, are likely to be encrypted eight ways to Sunday on modern systems. Before you can even begin to emulate games from a modern console, you need the unencrypted binaries, or you need to resign yourself to running community-developed homebrew. This means extracting the console key from a console, which is not likely to be a trivial matter.

Startup Touts All-in-One Digital Credit Card

TheSpoom Card Not Present (222 comments)

Wouldn't retailers be required to treat these transactions as "Card Not Present" transactions, meaning that far fewer would accept them?

I believe the liability is increased to the merchant if they just accept a CC number + expiration + CVV, to which accepting this would be functionally equivalent.

Bitcoin Donations To US Campaigns Might Soon Be Allowed

TheSpoom Re: Well... (144 comments)

God, you mention a possible solution to corruption and people start complaining "but there are so many variables!" Yes, yes there are. Politics is complicated.

If we're going to block every idea because it's not simple enough, we're simply going to be paralyzed, and I'm not a fan of that course of action.

Bitcoin Donations To US Campaigns Might Soon Be Allowed

TheSpoom Re: Well... (144 comments)

False dichotomy. The government should provide public campaign financing with reasonable rules as to who can access the funds.

Do You Need Headphones While Working?

TheSpoom Re: Klipsch Rugged earphones FTW (262 comments)

That's why I love in-ear monitors, they're the best of both worlds (especially Ultimate Ears with Comply foam tips). Great isolation and very, very good quality (better than you can get with earbuds).

(I understand that they may hurt some peoples' ears; that's unfortunate, but they work for me. I'm not affiliated with UE, Logitech, or Comply.)

Warhammer Online Users Repeatedly Overbilled

TheSpoom TheSpoom writes  |  more than 4 years ago

TheSpoom writes "A screw-up in EA's Warhammer Online billing system has resulted in many players being charged upwards of 22 times for a one-month subscription, filling bank accounts with overdraft fees and the Warhammer forums with very angry players, who are discussing the issue quite vocally. EA has said that refunds are in process and that "[they] anticipate that once the charges have been reversed, any fees that have been incurred should be refunded as well." They haven't specifically promised to refund overdraft charges, only to ask customers' banks to refund them once the actual charges are refunded. They seem to be assuming banks will have no problem with this."

WIPO Transfers SouthParkZone.com To Viacom

TheSpoom TheSpoom writes  |  more than 5 years ago

TheSpoom (715771) writes "Fans of South Park might be a bit disappointed to hear that WIPO has decided that the domain of long-time episode streamer SouthParkZone.com is to be transferred to Viacom, partially because it was "confusingly similar" to the South Park trademark. Thankfully, the Streisand effect is in full force: SouthParkZone will now be known as X Episodes and will start to include shows than just South Park in the future. Of course, if you're in the United States, you can view the episodes legally through the South Park website."

Chicago Law Firm Sues Over Hyperlink

TheSpoom TheSpoom writes  |  about 6 years ago

TheSpoom (715771) writes "Large Chicago law firm Jones Day are suing internet startup BlockShopper over the issue of whether linking to a business with their trademarked name should be legal. It would seem they are using trademark dilution as a tool to get BlockShopper to cease linking to their website. The EFF has filed an amicus curiae, as might be expected. If Jones Day wins this suit, anyone linking using a trademarked name may be in legal hot water."

Atlanta Police Arrest Anonymous for Protesting

TheSpoom TheSpoom writes  |  more than 6 years ago

TheSpoom (715771) writes "During the worldwide Anonymous protests against the Scientology organization yesterday, police in Atlanta, GA arrested a protester who had simply delivered a speech given around the world. They then proceeded to ticket any vehicles passing by that honked their horns in support of the protest. As Anonymous has no leader (as nobody knows the identity of anyone else), this action seems fruitless and one questions the motives of these policemen. Police in Los Angeles were more supportive."

iBoard

TheSpoom TheSpoom writes  |  more than 10 years ago I'm working on a piece of software called iBoard if anyone's interested. It's a bulletin board programmed in PHP and MySQL using Smarty, and I aim to make it as fast and extensible as possible. Right now I'm working on the admin interface, but logins, registration, profiles, forums, threads, smileys, and the like should all work correctly. Any help is appreciated. :^)
