Ask Slashdot: What Are the Strangest Features of Various Programming Languages?

Saei Lua[0]? (724 comments)

Lua's standard is, for things like arrays, to start counting from 1. The unlearning of old habits made this a hard adjustment.

Ask Slashdot: Practical Alternatives To Systemd?

Saei Confused (533 comments)

I'm not sure what the issue is here.

If you're looking to avoid using systemd, move to a distro that doesn't use systemd. (I think Mint still uses upstart and Gentoo uses openrc.) Otherwise, do the legwork to support the init system you want to use.

Pirate Bay Sports-Content Uploader Faces $32m Lawsuit

Saei Re:Happy to see it. (149 comments)

I hear that, and it's a good point. Although one should take note that the $32M is only alleged damages, and not the actual ruling. You can sue for any amount, but that doesn't mean the court will see merit in it.

Pirate Bay Sports-Content Uploader Faces $32m Lawsuit

Saei Happy to see it. (149 comments)

Content creators going after the uploaders rather than the torrent format or site? Good. That's doing it right.

GOP Bill To Outlaw EPA 'Secret Science' That Is Not Transparent, Reproducible

Saei Color me skeptical (618 comments)

The purpose of laws is almost always separate from the selling points used to sell it. So, even if the bill seems to have good method (i.e. making information public), the intention is purely partisan, and the use will be similarly malicious.

Former Dev Gives Gloomy Outlook On Linux Support For the Opera Browser

Saei Re:OPERA!? (181 comments)

With a single digit share of the browser market, it's only "remains" in a technical sense. For all intents and purposes it's as good as dead.

UK Men Arrested For Anti-Semitic Tweets After Football Game

Saei Pointless (598 comments)

I'm certain that these arrests won't have the desired effect, and I'd venture a bet that they'll foster feelings similar to those of the original tweets - a verbal Streisand effect. I'm confused what the police (and vicariously, those that push for harsh laws pertaining to what may be tweeted) are trying to accomplish here. This isn't good for anyone.

Global average? Oh, I doubt that very much. Perhaps lower than other countries with comparable wealth, or countries in the first world in general -- but the world average? Don't exaggerate / be so alarmist.

Facebook Comment Prompts Arrests In Cyberbullying Suicide Case

Saei Editors, please. (734 comments)

From TFA: "Both were charged with aggravated stalking." Not sure why this was omitted from the summary, and only the vague "third-degree felony charges" term used. Combined with the somewhat misleading title, implying that it was only facebook comments that got these girls in trouble, it's disappointing link-baiting.

Gene Variant Can Cause Nattering Nabobs of Negativity

Saei Re:Ignore your problems. (171 comments)

Way to trivialize depression as an issue of perspective, cured with a single, simple change.

If we just accept that things are terrible, and be happy about it, we will be happy about it. Genius.

A Teletherapy Startup Removes Barriers To Mental Health Care

Saei Re:I'm surprised this didn't catch on sooner. (102 comments)

Forcing people with social anxiety into uncomfortable situations is a piss-poor strategy. Mental disorders are not a "lack of skills", and it's beyond offensive that you would simplify it like that -- it's part of the reason we need remote care in the first place.
