Tibor the Hun Expansion business (412 comments)

When we say that the universe is expanding, do we simply mean that stuff like stars and galaxies are getting further apart, or are our X, Y, and Z dimensions expanding (stretching)?

Ask Slashdot: Uses For a Small Office Server?

Tibor the Hun Documentation and Wiki (260 comments)

Firstly, (and most importantly) read the documentation: http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/resources/documentation.html

Secondly, you can set up a wiki server pretty easily. It is extremely useful for self-help and internal process documentation. Easy to add videos, screenshots and keep the documentation up to date.

Thirdly, if you don't have an office collaboration server, you can also run your own Jabber server.

Both Wiki and Jabber services have their own documentation at the aforementioned link.

Developers: MS Hopes To Lure iOS Apps With API Mapping Tool

Tibor the Hun Re:Biggest problem with iOS development (191 comments)

Android development doesn't require you to buy hardware?

Awesome, do they recommend you use punch cards, or do you compile your code in the public library?

Purchasing a used Mac mini for $500 to get access to world's largest mobile app store really is an unsurmountable barrier, that only the mightiest of giants can overcome.

Developers: MS Hopes To Lure iOS Apps With API Mapping Tool

Tibor the Hun Viable for small shops? (191 comments)

This may be viable for shops with enough manpower to support multiple OSs and devices, but many one, two or three man shops may not have the resources to deal with support for some low-spec phone so far removed from the basics they can count on iOS.

HP Unveils WebOS Tablet, Plans WebOS Computer

You must not be a "serious", or "hardcore", or a "real" user who needs to get any "serious work done". I suspect you and I are using the same device to have this conversation ;)

I just yesterday figured out how to turn the classic comment selection on. It's in the account preferences under comments. Works with this too, thankfully.

I like the new design, thanks slashdot!

Apple Releases IOS 4.3 Beta To Developers

Tibor the Hun Re:Hardware Orientation Lock (101 comments)

The switch was for notifications, volume rocker for other, normal volume.
iPad doesn't get that many notifications, so it was kind of a waste.
I look forward to switching it back, and using the new gestures.

Microsoft Is Releasing an H.264 Plugin For Firefox

Tibor the Hun Good for Them (245 comments)

They are either realizing that either:
1. they are becoming increasingly irrelevant on the desktop as people are using mobile devices more and more for their needs (iPad/Android for email and facebook)(and Apple computer sales have been growing handsomely), and therefore need to compete for customers for the first time in 20 years, or
2. it is a good opportunity for them to pull the old Embrace, Extend, Extinguish.

Only time will tell.
Now, off to RTFA.

DRM-Free Game Suffers 90% Piracy, Offers Amnesty

Tibor the Hun Re:Next step to prevent PC piracy (795 comments)

Why is it always assumed that people who spend $2500 on a computer have an unlimited amount of money?

We hear far too often, "If they have money for a hummer, they have enough for gas" too.

Maybe they got a $3000 check for tuition and they blew it on a computer, and otherwise don't have a dime to their name.

Sure, a small minority of people have an unlimited supply of $$, but I wouldn't be surprised if vast majority took out some line of credit to buy a $2500 "multimedia" PC for their college kid, simply because a highschooler from BestBuy told them that that computer will totally help them with photos, and movies, and homework...

Will Ballmer Be Replaced As Microsoft CEO?

Tibor the Hun It's not just Ballmer (342 comments)

You're right, it's not just Ballmer, the whole company is a behemoth, and overall can't move the needle fast enough.
But if they were to split the search, xbox, and phone and concentrate on just OS and Office, they'd have a chance for some rapid movement.
But what do I know.
I do know that Ballmer should stop taking marketing and PR advice from Spongebob, and run his ass around a block a few times.

A Windows Phone 7 For Every Microsoftie

Tibor the Hun wtf slashdot (298 comments)

How does a completely substanceless comment by an AC get to a 5 informative?

an AC thinks the interface is very sleek, and that is enough to save the phone the riducule? wtf mods?
Here's the summary of AC's post:

application interface is pretty good
it does do a good job
current version of OS do not provide support for SQL-CE DB or multi-tasking or even copy & paste .net provides pretty good infrastructureto concoct a rudimentary in-memory db
Other things would have been really useful
Despite these deficiencies I think, this is a pretty good OS

In a world dominated by iPhone and it's mighty App Store, Android and it's openness and Blackberry and it's enterprise qualities, in your opinion a "pretty good" phone from Microsoft is a contender?
This is why young people don't take slashdot seriously anymore.

Bush Administration Emails Recovered

Tibor the Hun Tibor the Hun writes  |  more than 4 years ago

Tibor the Hun (143056) writes "CNN reports that the millions of "missing" Bush administration emails have been recovered. Unfortunately it could be years before we get access to their juicy details. The emails were highly sought out because of the administration's alleged involvement in politicized firings of US prosecutors."

Apple's Next Move

Tibor the Hun Tibor the Hun writes  |  about 5 years ago

Tibor the Hun writes "Hot on the heels of previous /. story of Kindle disappointment, iLounge brings us a scoop of a possible Apple tablet. Not a netbook, not a larger iPhone, but a device focused on the literary world, much like Kindle. A device that would organize and present all your magazine and newspaper subscriptions, books, even textbooks, with a web browser, in a lightweight, simple to use package. Reminiscent of the past, where many different MP3 players were on the market, but steadily overshadowed by iPod, will this be a device to do for e-print what iPod did for the music? With an established media store (iTMS), widespread client (iTunes), proven hardware, a solid software base, and a dedication to the education field, Apple could create a whole new market and profit like mad. By not offering a full feature general purpose computer they sidestep the issue of segmenting their own laptop market, yet capturing the base of avid readers who don't have a great need to edit office documents. For those /.ers who care about such things, the only question remains is if this device would have more space than a Nomad?"

Global Warming Irreversible, NOAA Scientist Finds

Tibor the Hun Tibor the Hun writes  |  more than 5 years ago

Tibor the Hun (143056) writes "NPR reports that Susan Solomon, one of the world's top climate scientists, finds in her new study that global warming is irreversible. Even if we could immediately cease our impact on pollution and greenhouse gasses emissions, global climate change would continue for many hundreds of years. The reason, according to the study, is the saturation of oceans with carbon dioxide. Her study looked at the consequences of long term effect in terms of sea level rise and drought.
Certainly adds more credence to theories suggesting that dealing with this event is beyond our capabilities. (Not that we should stop looking at alternative energy, or ways to improve the environment.)"

Apple Climbs Into Third Place in U.S. PC Market

Tibor the Hun Tibor the Hun writes  |  more than 6 years ago

Tibor the Hun (143056) writes " According to Gartner and IDC, Apple now has between 7.8 and 8.5% of market share. While those numbers are not astonishing, they are not insignificant, and their growth does not seem to be slowing down.
Will the pearly gates of acceptance open up for them once they reach the magic 10%, and will that have a positive effect on desktop Linux adoption? Hard to tell, but it's good to see that normal people (not just us geeks) are choosing to go with a different OS, rather than staying with the headache inducing Windows."

Tibor the Hun (143056) writes "While Microsoft is having a tough time selling VISTA on its own merits, Apple is posting record quarterly profits due in part to strong laptop and home computer sales as well as the exceptional sales of iPods. Blowing out even the optimistic "analyst" expectations Apple profits are at an all time high. More information from the horse's mout can be found here.
While Microsoft has a strong foothold on the market due to piracy and its monopolistic practices, strong sales of Apple hardware are showing that people are starting to chose and pay for a system that does not require constant maintenance and babysitting."

Tibor the Hun (143056) writes "Similar to what they did for their last CD, NIN have released a song from their upcoming CD as a multitrack GarageBand file. What's more, according to their website, they plan on releasing all of their songs from the upcoming release this way. For those amongst us looking at the world through broken windows, GarageBand is Apple's music recording and editing software.
It seems that NIN understand that involving fans into their music is actually good for their business. Hopefully we'll see more artists take this fan-friendly approach. Who knows, maybe some day Metallica will release a song of their own this way?"

Tibor the Hun (143056) writes "In a short ramble, John C. Dvorak gets all upset over Microsoft's review kit for Zune. To quote the eternal troll: If anything is doomed to failure, it is the Microsoft Zune... How about referring to it as a "piece of crap?" cNet also reports that a Best Buy store in San Francisco has already sold 10 of them!
On the day of the big release, it seems that most critics agree: even though it has more space than Nomad, as well as wireless, the Zune is still lame. How about you Taco? It is only fair that you give us your 3 sentence review:)"
