I bet your kids are annoying as hell. If we're having a conversation about politics, I would want your kids to save questions for AFTER the adults are finished talking.

Why Broadband In North America Is Not That Slow

Tiro BS (376 comments)

Advertised broadband speeds vary from actual speeds. In North America, this is largely a result of "network overhead," and is quite modest. In Europe, however, the variation is often dramatic.

I live in San Francisco, where Comcast advertises 8Mbps. We actually get 1Mbps down. If you want the full 6Mbps, you have to live some place like San Mateo County, where they don't have insane oversubscription.

The Comcast drone I chatted with online asked me: "Would you like to avail the Comcast?" I don't even know what the F that means.

Staying In Shape vs. a Busy IT Job Schedule?

Tiro Easy way (865 comments)

The easiest way to avoid gaining fat is to decrease insulin production by avoiding carbs; no bread, pasta, or sugars other than those naturally occurring in fruits and vegetables. Then, eat more legumes and greens.

Middle-School Strip Search Ruled Unconstitutional

Tiro Re:This is America (528 comments)

But the court also ruled that the school officials could not be held responsible for violating her rights (qualified immunity). FTA:

Dan Capra, a Fordham Law School professor, issued a statement in which he said that the fundamental question about the ruling in Safford Unified School District v. Redding, No. 08-479, is "is whether school officials will ever actually be liable for such searches."

"According to the court, the law on the subject was not clearly established, and so the officials had qualified immunity," Mr. Capra said. "But every case will be an application of law to fact. Officials now know they can't do exactly what was done in Safford. But what if there is any change of material fact in the circumstances?"

If they had called the cops, the cops would have been held to a higher standard. So any lawsuit won't win. (IMO, absurd.)

Interesting. How much should FreeBSD or Darwin OS cost? Similar to Linux, to Mac OS X or to Windows? What about XCode tools, a 1GB+ dvd image? Pretty much impossible to implement this without pissing everyone off.

Homeland Security To Scan Citizens Exiting US

Tiro Re:Small business is what I do. (676 comments)

Supply chains in Japan, China and Korea are highly dependent on small companies. They can quickly adapt to market conditions. That is how their economies are able to be so flexible despite their mega-corporations.

Interesting that this makes China more free in the economic sense than Korea/Japan.

High-Tech Start-Ups Put Down Roots In New Soil

Tiro Re:I saw it happen in the early 90's (141 comments)

Reminiscent of Wells Fargo, the bold SF bank that got eated by the very cautious Minnesota-based Norwest Corporation in 1998. Regarding your story, this is a fundamental aspect of capitalism: the dislocation of production from established areas to lower cost areas. That can mean Ohio to China, or San Francisco to Ohio. It is rather interesting to me that places like Gary, IN* don't rejuvenate on their own. There is definitely some cultural preference to other places, which is why there is more to the story than pure economic cost/infrastructure advantage. * Interesting that much new growth in the US Midwest comes from Mexican immigrants, for whom there is less bias against these 'boring' towns.
