Is Programming a Lucrative Profession?

TobyWong Re:the key to earning well in this field (844 comments)

To echo the parent post let me assure you as a freelancer that the only difference between a freelancer and a fulltimer is that the freelancer's resume is more up to date.

"Job security" is an illusion.

Artwork Re-Sells Itself Weekly On eBay

TobyWong Re:This guy is a scam artist (372 comments)

Let's compare this with something like WoW where the "patrons" pay a monthly fee and a significant portion of their life for the privilege of clicking their mouse a few thousand times just so they can make their name go bigger on a "virtual plaque".

Oh yeah, this guy's definitely got a monopoly on swindling brainless people...

If you consider this to be "encrypted" then I don't know what to tell you. It's a pretty simple piece to wrap your head around.

Wii Update 4.2 Tries (and Fails) To Block Homebrew

TobyWong Re:Also why are they doing it? (520 comments)

I'd imagine people would be willing to pay a premium for video games from other regions as well if it was possible to play them....

Gamers have done this for a long time. I imported a Japanese PSP ver 1.0 before they were available in the US and various games via lik-sang.com. Of course Sony sued them out of business for having the audacity to sell their products across imaginary regional borders. I haven't bought a PSP game since then (but have played quite a few). How you like them apples Sony?

New Zealander Invents Segway Alternative

TobyWong Re:Can you spell Face Plant? (282 comments)

Not everyone lives a 15 minute walk away from the gym. Even still, if you are trying to cram a workout in first thing in the morning before work that's 20 minutes right there that could be spent sleeping or eating breakfast if you drove instead.

I like gyms because I can go 24 hours a day - rain or shine and I can use equipment that doesn't exist in a park to do exactly what I want to do, then I shower, change, and leave.

Now I have my own set of complaints about gyms: douchebags who sit in the squat racks and do curls, guys who leave hundreds of pounds of plates loaded up and walk away when they are done, "personal trainers" who are completely out of shape themselves and insist on making their clients do the most ridiculous wacky exercises in an attempt to generate some sense of value for their $$$ service. These are really just annoyances though - they wouldn't stop me from using gyms.

New Zealander Invents Segway Alternative

TobyWong Re:Can you spell Face Plant? (282 comments)

What exactly is mind boggling about people who drive to the gym?? You have 1.5 hours to workout, shower, and get ready to go. How much of that time do you want to spend in transit? Not to mention the fact that a lot of people go to the gym to attend classes because they enjoy the social component. How about people who drive to the gym, work out, get changed, then go to work or on to some other engagement. You think they should jog there and show up in sweaty gym clothes? What an asinine comment.

iPhone 3GS Is Number One In Japan

TobyWong Re:Technology progresses. Japanese are tech expert (250 comments)

The Japanese are among the biggest label whores on the planet (and I mean that in the nicest way possible). "The Japanese aren't brand-motivated" is one of the funniest things I've ever read on slashdot. I used to live in a well known ski resort town and watching the Japanese tourists descend on the luxury label stores like a horde of locusts devouring everything in their path was a sight to behold.

Traveling With Tom Bihn's Checkpoint Flyer

TobyWong Re:Executive summary (i.e., price) (133 comments)

All you are doing is showing your ignorance here. Bihn makes phenomenal bags that are worth every penny. I could describe how well designed and useful they are but I get the feeling it would be like describing "red" to a blind man.

It's like the difference between a well designed piece of technical outerwear and a $20 winter jacket from walmart. They look similar to the untrained eye but they are worlds apart in how they are designed and made.

ISS's Node 3 Might Be Named "Colbert"

TobyWong Re:Seriously? (276 comments)

Wow, really? "Serenity" is just as much of a joke as "Colbert" is - the only difference is the Colbert option isn't intended to be serious. "Serenity" would be the ultimate nerd cheese choice and I say this as someone who enjoyed Firefly.

Microsoft Brings 36 New Features To Windows 7

TobyWong Re:MMMmmm (509 comments)

MS added a bunch of new features - good for them. Does your enjoyment of life hinge on trashing MS at every available opportunity? If you hate Windows 7 so much then use something else instead. You sound like a bitter ex-girlfriend.

Yeah yeah, mod me down now.

How To Be A Geek Goddess

TobyWong Re:Actually, nerds love girls! Perhaps too much... (349 comments)

See to me there is a pretty big difference between nerds respecting a woman on an intellectual level and nerds drooling all over some eye candy.

Let me use a nerdy example that I tested out pretty extensively a few years ago: I rolled a male and a female char in a popular mmo of the day. I tried to play them equally and as similar as is reasonably possible. The female char was given tons of free stuff from random people, was hit on constantly (I wasn't encouraging it), and was invited all the time to groups or events. The male character had noticeably less of this going on *BUT* when it came time for a group to make tactical decisions such as where to go next in pvp or how to tackle a tough boss the input from the female char was usually ignored while the the male chars advice was followed.

It was this very crazy situation where peoples real life prejudices had been transposed onto in-game avatars.

This is what I mean about geeks not giving women a chance within the geek domain. It has nothing to do with "proving oneself" first either because I've seen it happen time and time again before the woman even gets a chance to open her mouth.

How To Be A Geek Goddess

TobyWong Re:Well, duh. (349 comments)

Just because your boss yells at you doesn't mean you are forced to go home and kick your dog.

I don't entirely disagree with what you are saying but at the end of the day we still exercise choice.

Good reply though. Don't usually get that from ACs.

How To Be A Geek Goddess

TobyWong Re:Well, duh. (349 comments)

I've always found it puzzling how a group of people (geeks/nerds) who have traditionally been given such a hard time as a kid growing up (picked on at school, picked last for the kickball team, etc) seem to be almost universally intolerant to women within the geek domain. It seems almost counter intuitive. If you have felt the pain of ostracization and lack of acceptance why turn around and inflict it on others? Is it a simple lack of social skills? Regressing to playground "pull the hair of the girl you like" behaviour? I don't get it.

Belkin's Amazon Rep Paying For Fake Online Reviews

"shill"? Get the fuck out of here. I like Steam. I will continue to use Steam. I could care less what you think of that or anything else for that matter. Valve gets my money, I get games, and you get nothing.

Belkin's Amazon Rep Paying For Fake Online Reviews

TobyWong Re:Just speculation... (369 comments)

Steam *is* amazing. I can't even remember the last time I walked into a B&M game store. Anything new that looks interesting I will look on Steam first and then failing that, look to see what other online options are available.

Wow I must work for Valve. I'm clearly a Valve astroturfer.
