A Look at the Koch Brothers Dark-Money Network

Toonol Sigh. (406 comments)

That's it. I think I'm done with Slashdot. I was going to quit as soon as their new UX took effect, but if they're going to post stories like this, no point in staying even that long.

Obamacare Could Help Fuel a Tech Start-Up Boom

He said increase in funding, not reduction of deficit. They're related, but not the same thing.

Obamacare Could Help Fuel a Tech Start-Up Boom

Toonol Re:Exactly! (671 comments)

Why not? Free housing is charity. Free food and water is charity. Those are more important than healthcare.

Nothing wrong with charity, until people begin trying to force it.

Sexism Still a Problem At E3

And you're back to perpetuating sexism instead of trying to get rid of it.

Sexism Still a Problem At E3

Toonol Re:doesn't help people take games seriously either (737 comments)

I actually doubt this. Not only have I never seen a reputable source reporting this, from personal experience videogamers and other techies are about the least likely segment of the population to ever do this. Lawyers, salesmen, politicians... those are the groups that might act like this.

Woz Compares the Cloud and PRISM To Communist Russia

Toonol Re:FIrst Post Maybe? (549 comments)

It's an invalid point. The 'shittiest jobs' are low-paid because they're menial, require no skill, and anybody can do them. The shitty jobs that require intelligence and skill are... highly paid. And there are many shitty jobs that are highly paid.

It isn't decided by race, gender, or economic status. It's decided by the market, and the demand for the work an individual is able to do.

Dammit. Posting to undo moderation. You deserve an 'informative' which I can no longer give.

Google Asks Government For More Transparency, Other Groups Push Back Against NSA

Toonol Re:WTF is going on? (323 comments)

I just signed it, worked ok. Had to create an account; first petition I've ever signed. I think they're generally nonsense, but this issue has raised my hackles enough I'm going to do all the nutty 'awareness raising' I can.

Google Asks Government For More Transparency, Other Groups Push Back Against NSA

Toonol Re:Impeach Obama! (323 comments)

There comes a point where, in your desire to avoid it, you inadvertently circle around to blatant racism again; you've hit that point.

Google Asks Government For More Transparency, Other Groups Push Back Against NSA

Toonol Re:Glad to see some real pushback (323 comments)

Both of you are rated +4 insightful right now. Typical /. group think.

That is the exact opposite of groupthink. That's individualthink.

Lots of people, obviously. Probably millions. Why'd you ask this question about a statement that had a clear answer?

Major Advance Towards a Proof of the Twin Prime Conjecture

Toonol not sure... (248 comments)

Ok, this isn't rigorous at all (obviously), but it seems to me that if the size of the gap continuously grew, but fluctuated randomly, you would still have an infinite number of primes close together even though the average distance between them never stopped increasing. They would become fewer and fewer, but never stop, and hence would be infinite.

Not doubting the guy's work, but I'm doubting the summary's "the gaps between consecutive numbers don't keep growing forever."

World Press Photo Winner Accused of Photoshopping

Toonol Re:The author has the RAW file. Case closed (182 comments)

Personally I know of no software that can currently reverse a jpeg into raw.

Me neither, and now that I think of it, that's kind of a glaring hole. Somebody needs to write one, so that the entire chain of evidence can be faked. At this point, I think it's better to establish in everybody's mind that no photos can be trusted, rather than some notion that the fakes can still be distinguished from the real.

A 2013 Democrat is a 1990's FAR right wing Republican. We have no true democratic party.

Oft repeated, but not true. In fact, it's getting a bit tired, now. Go look at party platforms from then and now.

Toonol Re:Shield laws (248 comments)

Journalistic shield laws are a terrible idea. Journalists should have no right that every American citizen doesn't have.

What we need is just the right to free speech, and the right to be free from unreasonable search and seizure. That's all.

Florida Teen Expelled and Arrested For Science Experiment

Toonol Re:Lets not (1078 comments)

So you think that science experiments should receive punishments and gun crimes should receive slaps on the wrist?

You seem to have completely misread what he wrote. He pretty clearly implied that was ridiculous.

Possessing Animal Crossing a Warning Sign?

Toonol Toonol writes  |  more than 5 years ago

Toonol (1057698) writes "Local ABC affiliate KMIZ is running a story claiming "Wii Gamers Vulnerable to Crime". Amazingly, in the article Andy Anderson, part of the Mid-Missouri Internet Crimes Task Force, is quoted as saying about the game Animal Crossing: "There is no reason an adult should have this game," and continues "adults playing 'animal crossing' and similar games are likely doing it for the wrong reasons."

This seems to reflect the absolute ignorance certain people have of the gaming community, which can be a problem when mixed with the legal domain. Do we just need to wait another generation before gaming loses it's stigma?"

Going from prototype to market

Toonol Toonol writes  |  more than 6 years ago

Toonol (1057698) writes "I've put together a prototype of a small device, and am considering manufacturing and selling it in moderate quantities (hundreds, maybe thousands). It's currently constructed out of parts purchased at Radio Shack, but can anyone point me toward a better wholesale source for resistors, switches, LEDs, and so on? This will be an inexpensive device, certainly under twenty dollars, so every penny saved is important. Another concern I have is regulation... if I am selling a handmade electronic device on eBay, or on my own web site, is there a chance of running afoul of the FCC or similar agencies? Any other general advice would be appreciated, since I'm sure many Slashdot readers have gone through this process."
