If Ridesharing Is Banned, What About Ride-Trading?

Tsiangkun Re:Pittsburgh Mayor was asked to crack down (353 comments)

I, for one, will look forward to the city being sued for an enormous amount of money when the inevitable deaths happen, and the PUC showns they had expressed concerns and the mayor gave zero fucks for public safety.

If Ridesharing Is Banned, What About Ride-Trading?

Tsiangkun Re:This is what cab companies need to do to remain (353 comments)

That is carpooling, not "RideSharing" as the term applies here. Uber is a for profit company. They abuse the phrase "ride sharing" to hide that they have full time drivers acting as if they were licensed to provide transportation to the public.

It won't work, but not because miles are payment.
Trading miles doesn't work when your clients prefer to not have a car

Microsoft Launches Office For iPad: Includes Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Tsiangkun Re:A production tool on a consumption device? (184 comments)

Or, is it a way to share your powerpoint and not have to carry more than your mobile device ? We have a wifi projector at work. This is just another way to let people throw something up on the screen without moving cables around. Think of it as a presentation tool on the mobiles, that supports minor editing and layout changes and it makes a little more sense. Most people wanting this have office, and office documents, and this opens up a new way to present them.

Microsoft Launches Office For iPad: Includes Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Tsiangkun Re:Well, that took a while (184 comments)

Come out of your hole, apple laptops are dominating in my area. Python, Go, d3, ... all the groups I frequent are apparently not readers of /., or some /. readers do not get out into the real world much.

Microsoft Launches Office For iPad: Includes Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Tsiangkun Re:Perfect (184 comments)

I went 12 years without needing an office suite. When looking for a new job, it was the first thing I used to update the resume in .doc format, .rtf, and .txt.

we generally pay to be published in the glossy covered journals. The direction of travel for the money is from the researchers to the journals.

GNUstep Kickstarter Campaign Launched

Tsiangkun Darling == Google Drive ? (131 comments)

Is this Darling project going to be the easiest way to get a functioning google drive client for linux ? Windows, MacOSX, iOS, and Android all have clients, and at this point the lack of a functioning linux client is not a technical issue.

+1 You would think that with all the programmers on linux, something as elegant and functional as sourcetree would be standard.

Ask Slashdot: Best Software For Med-School Note-Taking?

Although I find it useful, I always go back to pen and paper when I need to work at a pace other than my own, such as one being dictated by a speaker.

Former TigerDirect President Indicted In $230 Million Laundering Scheme

Tsiangkun Re:Was I the only one? (109 comments)

I never ordered from TigerDirect. The prices were good. Too good. I was always concerned I was missing something and would get genuine Kingsten memory, or a sweet Inntel Processor.

How Did You Learn How To Program?

Tsiangkun Re:Logo on an Apple II (623 comments)

Me too. Then we got to move on to using basic of some kind. When we got the IIgs, arkanoid became a huge distraction from logo and basic.

Ask Slashdot: Is the Bar Being Lowered At Universities?

Tsiangkun Re:Wait, a 3rd year course on blogging? (605 comments)

Or maybe one where the purpose is to design and build a blog system, where the actual system is what is important, and not the sample posts used for testing ? I guess the lack of information presented is just another sign of the youth having degraded mental abilities. He didn't list the primary objectives, he just bitched about grammar used in blog posts, which may or may not even be relevant to what the class is trying to achieve.

Ask Slashdot: Is the Bar Being Lowered At Universities?

Tsiangkun Re:Wait, a 3rd year course on blogging? (605 comments)

One in using the new medias to attract and retain eyeballs ?
Maybe the course is graded by something more important than the English abused in the posts

  • Does the hit rate increase over time ?
  • Does the site attract a global audience ?
  • Does the site get repeat visits ?
  • How many minutes does a viewer spend on the site ?
  • How much of your content is actually ever seen ?
  • How many people link to your content ?

I think there are many ways to evaluate a successful blog, besides the correctness of the grammar.

Ask Slashdot: Best *nix Distro For a Dynamic File Server?

Tsiangkun Pogoplug (234 comments)

You are in over your head. Buy a pogoplug and some usb2 hubs. Connect your drives to the hubs and they appear as unified file system on your clients. Or, if you need better performance accessing the data, call an expert.
