Among Servers, Apple's Mac Mini Quietly Gains Ground

AMD Files Suit Against Former Employees For Alleged Document Theft

U8MyData Re:Really? (72 comments)

I am not swinging at nuts and it isn't a simple issue with performance, rather working! It has been and continues to be a question of whether or not I can have any confidence in their products, period.

AMD Files Suit Against Former Employees For Alleged Document Theft

U8MyData Really? (72 comments)

Given AMD/ATI's reputation and my own experience, no wonder. I would have left AMD/ATI too. Much about marketing and less on performance. nVidia is my personal preference for just that reason. I am only writing this because of a recent experience with HP/AMD driver issues on a Windows 8 install and non-compliant, non-working OpenGL implemetation. Inexcusable in my humble opinion. This is NOT a gaming issue, rather a high performance application issue and this is not the first time. AMD, GYST (yes, explatives involved)! Screams of SCO type litigation...

This will happen as likely as the Democrats actually passing a formal balanced budget. I wish American business was as much about the customer as it is about the bottom line. You know, you can do both.

Caltech and UVic Set 339Gbps Internet Speed Record

U8MyData Caution please (79 comments)

The faster we can move data is in some way connected to how fast life moves in every respect. There is a point when "cool" is truly a four letter word. Not that I am arguing against it, it's just that there is a similar arguments within the AI industry. In more and more ways our achievements are outstripping out ability to deal with the consequences.

Will Microsoft Dis-Kinect Freeloading TV Viewers?

U8MyData Jist say no (478 comments)

Let's just stop watching altogether! We are already subject to endless commercial leaders on the internet, overbearing radio commercials and now this. We cn take back the power by exercising our right/choice not to watch. Ass soon ad the ad revenue dries up, so will this crap. And another thing, get the hell out of my house!

Shut Up and Play Nice: How the Western World Is Limiting Free Speech

U8MyData Tolerance (1160 comments)

Okay, so what is next? You question authority and you are fined or worse jailed? Listen, freedom of speech is fundamental to the tolerance that is required. As a global community we are never, or at least for the time period most of us, our children and their children are around, going to agree on everything, share *exact* beliefs, or practice the same religious exercises. That's one of the key elements of the American notion of the separation of church and state. I have to say I saw something like this comining since the social notion of Zero Tolerance came about here in the States. In order for things to function correctly you have to allow for a degree of disorder, chaos, mistakes or summed up: TOLERANCE. We are certainly all imprefect and to claim otherwise is simply wrong. I respect my neighbor just as long as they respect me no matter where they come from, what they believe, or what they practice. Further I have a right to disagree, not associate, and not accept any one else's imposition on my structure. In other words, mind your own business. It has worked here for a long time and will continue just as long as we, collectively, refuse to acquiesce.

Study: Kids Under 3 Should Be Banned From Watching TV

U8MyData Yeah Limits! (334 comments)

I think there should be limits on Doctors and government officials constantly drumming up studies on what is good for us. We know already and the vascillations of these studies is way more harmful to my mental health and well being than say TV ever would be. Get the hell out of my and others business.

Ask Steve Wozniak Anything

U8MyData Your influence (612 comments)

Mr Woz, Can you characterize your current and perhaps even future influence with Apple? Like many here, we are curious where Apple will go from here now that Mr. Jobs has passed. He was the persona of the Apple brand and without something or someone providing that edge I fear difficult times ahead. I don't need to remind anyone about the recent Maps issues. Where might you fit in to that realm? After all, you are the other half (Ying? or Yang?) of the apple legacy.

Companies More Likely To Outsource Than Train IT Employees

U8MyData Cost of IT (235 comments)

This has been this way since I can remember. 17 years in this business and I think I have received maybe two formal training sessions, both two days. Not to mention the real value of what is being delivered for that $2495.00 session is sh*t. The costs of IT to the business and individual is incredible. If an individual were to go out and get a current MCSE, what is the expected life span of that certification? What are the real costs in terms of fees, tests, software, and hardware to achieve such accredidation. If you are working for a company, you really can't deduct those expenses. If you are on your own, you won't see that return until the next year. And when the economy tanks, what you used to be worth is double digits less that what you were before. I am self tought by in large because I love to help people, I love to solve issues, and I love to build things, but what I am experiencing in terms of my lack of paper pedigree is hurting my future prospects and at this point I can't really afford to spend thousands on what I already know or if I don't, I know where to find it. To business on the otherhand, this is all a write off. Pay well, educate, support and respect your IT staff and you won't have a lot to worry about.

AT&T Should Be Investigated For 'Fraudulent' Data Policies, Says PK

U8MyData Primary Connection (138 comments)

Then there are people like me who actually went out bought a Wilson Amplifier and realized pretty good connections speeds compared to the lowely satellite alternative as I suffer to live in a quite, peaceful, rural area. My only problem is I get 2 GB monthly (Verizon) over my HTC Incredible and since the introduction of the iPhone (coincidentally?) have seen my 1.0+ mbps drop to about 512K (up and down). Still fast enough to work. But after watching just a handful of video (and all the freaking prefixed ads) I hit my cap really quickly. I guess I wouldn't mind paying more if I could use this like a good ole DSL circuit, use it without fear and freely. I am very frustrated with this and I just know, and it really does smell like, market manipulation and collusion between carriers. Telco's have ALWAYS been like that. You might think T-1's would be cheaper now that so many of the landline phones are wireless now and the dedicated copper to service them lies dormant. But T-1's have always had the something special tag to them and appear to still do. So frustrating to be in data jail. I still pay an arm and a leg for service and often stare at my phone thinking what am I getting for all this money other than frustration? Not sure about AT&T, but Verizon had 108+ million subscribers with an average cell phone bill around (excluding the never calcuable taxes, surcharges, and taking into account 60% cell and 40% smartphone) is about $80, that makes there revenue in one month 8.6 billion. Not too bad if you ask me. Why do they insist they are the victims when in fact, it is the consumer...

IT in the face of disaster

U8MyData U8MyData writes  |  about a year and a half ago

U8MyData (1281010) writes "I was on the ground in the middle of Texas away from home when 9/11 happened. Now I watch the storm batter the NY area and wonder again. Where are the heroing stories of IT during times like this? I missed for some reason all the stories of recovery and the successes/fauilures of DR during that time. I can only imagine the phone calls, the late nights, and the diffuculties "our folks" are facing. Anyone have stories to share?"

Mobile Broadband (Teathering)

U8MyData U8MyData writes  |  more than 2 years ago

U8MyData (1281010) writes "Anyone like me that is more or less forced off the local telco, cable, or wireless (wifi or private spectrum) and relegated to the wireless phone networks for broadband access pissed off at the rediculous throughput and limited bandwidth? I am tired of paying for advertisers bandwidth when I am forced to watch paid ad after paid ad when I want to just watch a news clip. I'm on Verizon and if I spend anytime at any news site and try and catch up on current events through clips, I get these really nice text messages that I am at 25, 50, 75% of alloted bandwidth when at least half of what I watch is forced ads. I am so tired of having to pay the burden of advertisers or, in a converse way of thinking, why won't the wireless carriers realize it's not necessarily the users sucking up the bandwidth; it's the freaking advertisers/marketers? I don't have a choice right now and I am really conflicted with the current state of affairs. Give us 10 GB rather than 2 then maybe I can tolerate it."

IT: Wired vs Wireless

U8MyData U8MyData writes  |  more than 3 years ago

U8MyData (1281010) writes "I'm sure this has been discussed in many circles before, but I have a very real issue here. Withholding identities and such, I have been tasked with a forklift network build and have had a somewhat philosophical debate about infrastructure. This issue boils down to the wiring plant or lack thereof. My CEO adamantly told me I was wrong about "traditional wire" needing to be installed in moderate amounts in each office (4 Cat5e or 6 cables/jacks per) and that the whole industry will be wireless before long. Of course, I paused and said, "...with no disrespect, I disagree with your assessment." That was pretty ballsy of me and out of character of sorts, but I have been at this IT game for over 15 years and do disagree. So, I ask Slashdot, my first such appeal for industry and peer review, am I off base here? Is wireless set to take over enterprise LAN communications anytime soon? I come from government and financial industries, now in private business, and this concept was taboo for what I would call obvious reasons. Has opinion changed since I last came up for air? I am willing to reconsider my position given concrete arguments, but this is more about painting a picture for my CEO (or me ;-))."

Escaping IT

U8MyData U8MyData writes  |  more than 5 years ago

U8MyData (1281010) writes "What does someone do who is not in the "community" at large, lives in a rural community where the story has been "more with less" for the last decade do to replace a livelyhod? Not surely a popular subject with the techical types, but I'm done with this. Surely, there are things that are transferable to other careers, but the income is not. What to do? Any advise or experiences out there? Thx..."
