Ask Slashdot: Is the Recycle Bin a Good GUI Metaphor?

Uzik2 use pain therapy (465 comments)

Instead of catering to their bad behavior use negative reinforcement to teach them better behavior. "If you delete the file and can't recover it then YOU will type the document back in, in addition to your regular tasks"

Ask Slashdot: Is There a War Against Small Mail Servers?

Uzik2 Welcome to the club (459 comments)

I have business class cable service and get preemptively blocked by an "anti spam" organization because it's IP address is on a cable block. There are better ways to prevent spam but it's profitable for ISP's so they don't care. Unless we start a class action lawsuit I doubt there's much that can be done about it.

Should Younger Developers Be Paid More?

Uzik2 Re:Life is not fair (785 comments)

Agreed, Life isn't fair. If the senior programmer can't get a better salary it might be a wakeup call for him to learn more marketable skills.

Stargate Universe Cancelled

Storys were weak and badly thought out, Little action, and characters I could not care about. The writers/producers/directors need a wake up call. This is it

Programming Mistakes To Avoid

Uzik2 my favorite: more is always better (394 comments)

Just add more code! That always makes it better. Closely followed by "It's unreliable/broken" "We've got to rewrite that old xxxx in m$'s new blah-ty-blah framework!".

'I Just Need a Programmer'

Uzik2 It's common for writers too (735 comments)

Many fiction writers have told me the same story about their own profession. Somehow people think the hard work of making an idea real is the easy part.

I can second this recommendation. If you're not going windows only look at Qt.

Is Linux At the End of Its Life Cycle?

Uzik2 Lame journalism 1 trick (676 comments)

Journalism 1: Write a story titled "Is xxx dead?"
Insert popular item of choice in place of 'xxx'.
Generates controversy and people keep falling for it.

NHibernate 3.0 Cookbook

Uzik2 Did it include "Just say no"? (72 comments)

NHibernate's implementation might be fine for Java but sucks for Desktop applications. Instead of paying the cost of parsing the object mapping files once (when the web server is started) you pay for it every time you start your application. It also guarantees that your efficiency is awful because of the way it's designed. Do yourself a favor and use something else.

Security Strategy: From Requirements To Reality

Uzik2 bugs have nothing to do with security (64 comments)

Seems like the same old blather. I don't see anything in the authors credentials that lend any credibility to what he's proposing.

Microsoft Charging Royalties For Linux

Uzik2 wake up call needed on aisle 5 (286 comments)

You can be sued at any time, by anyone, for any reason, no matter how stupid.
Further, you must defend yourself in court, or you will automatically lose.
It's expensive for the person suing you so it's not generally done unless they're really angry or really rich.
Does any of that description fit any person or corporation in the story you posted?

The suit will be thrown out but Microsoft hopes by the use of fear to control you without actually having to pay lawyers.
They have lawyers on staff who get paid anyway so there's no down side to this unless you call their bluff or stop buying their stuff because of their practices.
Up to you man.

Five Times the US Almost Nuked Itself

Uzik2 stupid scare mongering (384 comments)

Nukes will not go off accidentally. Which should be obvious if there were five opportunities and none of them went off. It's hard to get a nuclear explosion. It will not happen in a fire etc.

Dead flash drives?

Uzik2 Uzik2 writes  |  more than 4 years ago

Uzik2 (679490) writes "I seem to have a very high rate of dead flash drives from microcenter. I wondered if this was just my bad luck or a sign of poor quality/design from the manufacturer. Perhaps it might be good to investigate?"
