Kerry Says US Is On the "Right Side of History" When It Comes To Online Freedom

VMaN sure, but.. (261 comments)

If that is the case, be honest about it.
"Let me be clear – as in the physical space, cyber security CAN come at the expense of cyber privacy."

See? Now THAT would be an honest statement, and I could rightfully criticize it.

VMaN doublespeak (261 comments)

"Let me be clear – as in the physical space, cyber security cannot come at the expense of cyber privacy."

But that is precisely what is going on.

Orphaned Works and the Requirement To Preserve Metadata

VMaN Re:Too much metadata. (129 comments)

99% of people would just click "OK", and have their metadata, including GPS coordinates, uploaded.

While you could say it's their own damn fault, it would still be a huge privacy problem.

The Pirate Bay Starts Using Virtualized Servers

VMaN Re:TPB owners living the life (186 comments)

You can use the word "steal" all you want.

But as long as the artists still have their works, you're using the wrong word.

And when people are using it wrong on purpose, it makes me care just a little bit less every time.

Mozilla Adds H.264 Support To Android Firefox

VMaN Re:Sanity prevails (77 comments)

unencumbered means it can be implemented without paying royalties. That's kind of a big deal in many projects. h.264 does have a royalty free (read market maximization) period for some uses/volumes right now, but they aren't permanent.

As for quality, it's fully up to par with mpeg4 afaik.

To take a project that /. is familiar with, the raspberry pi, a significant chunk of it's price goes directly to codec royalties.

I don't mind h.264 being used, but I'd love to see WebM also, being free and all.

Apple News From WWDC and iPhone 5 Rumors

VMaN Re:ethernet dongles (likely at added cost on $2k+) (683 comments)

Just because floppy drives seem archaic NOW doesn't automatically make that a good move at the time. They were a year or two too early in dropping the floppy drive, without replacing it with a practical (this is the important part) alternative.

USB keys were expensive and low capacity(not that floppies were better on that front), and optical wasn't a drop in replacement.

It just felt like a whole lot of form over function.

(Note, I remember floppies fondly, but I'm not forgetting how horribly unreliable they where.)
