EPA Makes Most Wood Stoves Illegal

Viceice Re:Which company bought this 'new' rule? (1143 comments)

The run away inflation scenario you describe would only happen if the money supply grew as exponentially, which no competent central bank will allow to happen.

To be sure, minimum wage will contribute to inflation, but not in any catastrophic sort of way. Earning minimum wage does not mean a person will suddenly be able to afford to pay double for basics such as food, healthcare, transport etc. Earning at that level pretty much just means a person makes just enough to scrap by and not starve or die in the cold.

The goal of minimum wage is not to make anyone rich, rather it is to ensure a minimum standard of living among those who work at the lowest rung and the money for this increased payroll to come from corporate profits.

On the subject of robots ...

Viceice Re:overly broad then overly specific definition (318 comments)

I think it's because the Roomba is autonomous, where as the Washing Machine is comparable to a Vacuum Cleaner -- a user is required to operate it.

If they made a Washing Machine that would load, sort, dry and fold your laundry all by itself, and all you had to do was sporadically top up the consumables and empty out the trap, i think it would qualify as a robot too.

Erm. Google already HAS changed the world. What they are doing now is using their success to help push the frontiers of Science, to make Science cool again. How is this not a good thing?

France Demands Skype Register As a Telco

Viceice Re:Then Leave (209 comments)

Yep. Each time the so called libertarians come out with their spiel, I am reminded of the quote "In a democracy your vote counts, in feudalism your count votes."

Essentially they want the world to go back to an era when the rich and endowed had all the power and the poor could go get fucked.

Canon Shows the Most Sensitive Camera Sensor In the World

Viceice Re:Still photography? (218 comments)

Main reason is that a more contemporary DSLR sensor is actually more sensitive even tho it's surface area is smaller due to advances in semiconductor fabrication etc. On top of that, a new camera would have a much better image processor.

At the end of the day, what we want to achieve is not just high sensitivity in low light, but vibrancy of colour and fine detail in low light.

Canon Shows the Most Sensitive Camera Sensor In the World

Viceice Still photography? (218 comments)

I would actually like to see them implement this in a still camera. Cut the megapixels down to 2 or 3 (this is more then enough to put online and ), and make it 7x more sensitive than today's still cameras.

Canon Shows the Most Sensitive Camera Sensor In the World

Viceice Re:Mo it is 7.5 time larger larger (218 comments)

That need not even be the case. You could still do it in 35mm, 1080p HD video is roughy 2.1 megapixels, where as the EOS1DX is 18.1mp.

So there is definitely enough room to make pixels 7 times larger than a EOS1DX

Groupon Still Losing Money, CEO Is Fired And Leaks Final Email

Viceice Re:Soooooo (207 comments)

In the end, Groupon is just a marketing tool. It's up to you to be smart about using it. If repeat business does not happen, it's more likely a weakness of your business model than Groupon's fault.

I once bought a coupon for a restaurant. The food was bad and when I complained, I was insulted by the owner.

Needless to say, I did not go back, and it's really not Groupons fault.

Google Gives 15,000 Raspberry Pis To UK Schools

Viceice Re:Mmm .... Pi (159 comments)

You're looking at it the wrong way. The device works, but like most things man made, it has shortcomings. Imagine the learning experience the kids will have in overcoming these limitations.

What if the next version of the R-Pi contains a fix to these problems developed by a bunch of kids in one of those schools? Wouldn't that be cool?

How Many Text Messages Do You Send a Day?

Viceice Whats a Text message? (217 comments)

If it's strictly SMS, I seldom use it. These days all I get are SMS spam, and the OTP tokens whenever I bank online. Why pay 10c a message when i can Whatsapp, gtalk or facebook message on my phone for the price of my data plan?

EU Antitrust Chief: Google "Diverting Traffic" & Will Be Forced To Change

Viceice Re:nonsensical allegations (329 comments)

How is this bad? I sometimes exploit this by typing a location into the general search bar, fully expecting a google maps result to click on.

If i wanted BingMaps i would have used bing instead.

Adobe's Strange Software Giveaway: Goof, Or Clever Marketing?

Viceice Re:The latter. (385 comments)

For photoshop i guess. But CS4 was when it really got good for working stiffs. Multiple artboards in Illustrator and InDesign gets dragged kicking and screaming into the digital distribution age. I never looked back.

Petition For Metric In US Halfway To Requiring Response From the White House

Viceice Re:US Metric System (1387 comments)

"1 millilitre is 1 cubic centimetre (CC) of water (1 cm x 1 cm x 1 cm), 1 litre is 1000 CC's"

And the most practical part is that 1000cc = 1 litre = 1kg of water.

How heavy is a jug of water? Just look at the volume.

Also, In temperatures, 0'C is Freezing point of water, 100'C is boiling point.

In Volume/ Mass/ Weight, 1000sq/cm = 1 Litre = 1 kg of water.

All these have practical applications in real life.

FCC Chief Urges FAA To Ease Airplane Electronics Ban

Viceice Re:This is in line with other FAA requirements (242 comments)

I have a cousin who is a commercial pilot. He was first officer on a flight years back when wifi was first gaining popularity. After take off and the plane was levelled out, all of a sudden some of the nav equipment started giving false readings.

Long story short, it turned out that the wifi transceiver on a Toshiba laptop owned by one of the passengers was defective and was transmitting on frequencies it was not supposed to.

So yeah, while on paper it should not happen, you only need 1 fuckup by a minimum wage slave in a Chinese factory.

Malaysia mull compulsory registration of tech work

Viceice Viceice writes  |  more than 2 years ago

Viceice (462967) writes "Hot on the heels of recently passed legislation further restricting Freedom of Assembly, the National Front led Malaysian Government is now working to make the registration of all Tech workers mandatory, making it an offence punishable by a stiff fine and jail for anyone to plan, deploy, service and maintain any computing system without a license.

A leaked draft of the legislation has ignited a backlash among the IT community, which fear the law, when passed, will be devastating to the tech industry in Malaysia."

Western Digital Holding Migrant Workers Ransom
