MasterCard and Visa Start Banning VPN Providers

Wakko Warner Oh, fuck off. (353 comments)

"I would guess" you're making shit up. You're willing to throw out anonymity and privacy because some people might be circumventing copyright somehow? You're pathetic. (Or you're a government astroturfer. But I repeat myself.)

Are you better off than you were four years ago?

Wakko Warner Yes, but I had to leave America to do it. (524 comments)

Now making about 50 percent more in Australia. Went from high five figures to low six. Living the American Dream(TM) in the southern hemisphere.

White House Pulls Down TSA Petition

Wakko Warner Re:Two can play at this game (638 comments)

You're out of your fucking mind if you think a Romney presidency wouldn't be worse than what we've got right now.

It would be an utter and complete horrorshow.

White House Pulls Down TSA Petition

Wakko Warner Re:Two can play at this game (638 comments)

Has this ever, in the history of the United States, actually worked?

I'll spare you the research: no, it hasn't.

RIAA Admits SOPA Wouldn't Have Stopped Piracy

Wakko Warner MPAA / RIAA were scapegoats. (153 comments)

My theory is that the US Government was using the RIAA/MPAA as a proxy to get this rammed through.

Kim Dotcom Offers the DoJ a Deal

Wakko Warner Re:This case is a joke. (383 comments)

Huh?

I missed the part where Kim Dotcom was uploading his own personal BluRay rips to MU.

I *remember* the part where his users did.

I don't give a shit how he made his money or whether or not you consider it "ill-gotten" simply because MU hosted some copyrighted material uploaded by users. It's an absurd contortion of logic and reason to say that he deserves none of his money because some of his users misbehaved.

$100m is the equivalent of one mid-tier movie budget. If you think Hollywood actually felt that tiny financial "hit", you're the one who's hopelessly naive.

No, You Can't Claim 'Negligence' In a Copyright Case

Wakko Warner Re:Negligence (108 comments)

So there would be two big hurdles for a plaintiff here: (1) a duty to keep one's internet connection secure and (2) the idea that there has actually been harm.

#1 fails because there's no requirement, either written or implied, that a user's internet connection be secured.

#2 fails because common sense.

Kim Dotcom Offers the DoJ a Deal

Wakko Warner This case is a joke. (383 comments)

The US should cut its losses, give the dude his servers and money back, and go after some actual criminals. This is just pathetic.

Arizona H-1B Workers Advised to Carry Papers At All Times

Wakko Warner Re:Oh, c'mon ! (884 comments)

So, now you're re-framing the fucking debate. Originally your claim was that "all" liberals want "all" illegal immigrants to stay.

Stop fucking moving the goalposts, you dumb cunt.

Arizona H-1B Workers Advised to Carry Papers At All Times

Wakko Warner Re:If it's the MIB, it won't be so bad ... (884 comments)

On one side the Liberals declare that people entering the USA, even illegally, should be considered as "legal", so long as they do not make trouble

I've literally never, in my entire life, heard any self-described "liberal" say this. Never. You're setting up a false dichotomy so you can make it look the problem is being caused by both sides.

It isn't.

This is entirely a right-wing issue, and the flames of racism are being fanned entirely by so-called "conservatives".

Ask Slashdot: What's Your Take On HTTPS Snooping?

Wakko Warner Re:They don't enforce snooping on everything (782 comments)

This happened to me once and the only consequence was they blocked outgoing ssh.

So I started port-forwarding in reverse by starting a VPN connection every morning from home and running SSH from there with some ports forwarded back into my network. They never found that.

IT Positions Some of the Toughest Jobs To Fill In US

Wakko Warner Re:Salaries (886 comments)

I left the US 4 years ago and make about 40 percent more in Melbourne than I ever did in Fairfield county, Connecticut. I didn't even have to try. An added bonus was 4 weeks paid leave to start.

Raises and bonuses are almost unheard-of in the IT industry in America.

Identd must die.

Wakko Warner Wakko Warner writes  |  more than 11 years ago So anyway, I was on IRC the other day (as I am often wont to do), and, as I was being banned from the network for not running "identd", I thought to myself: "Why do we still use this???"

Can anyone come up with a valid reason why, in 2002, ident is still considered by some people to be a necessary and valuable component of the Internet? Most people use Windows for everything, and Windows has no identity service. Most UNIX folks I know disable it for security reasons. I've disabled ident lookup on the IRC servers I admin, and have encouraged others on my network to do the same. Why on earth do people still insist we all run it in order to connect to and utilize their network services? Is it still 1993 in some part of the world?
