US Wireless Carriers Shifting To Voice Over LTE

Wikipedia Re:Seamless fallback (126 comments)

I've watched www.google.com/voice versus a cdma phone versus a gsm phone receiving a text message that was simultaneously sent to all three, and the Google Voice website showed up first, then the GSM phone, then the CDMA phone about two second after the GSM phone.

Facebook Refuses To Share Employee Race and Gender Data

Wikipedia she's boring (250 comments)

Anyone else find Sheryl Sandberg boring? Seriously, come up with some new and interesting technology. All she ever says is "women women women blah blah blah..." and I'm all for extreme fairness: the best person to do a job is the best D*MN person to do the job! To HELL with all this "fit in with the corporate culture", that's discriminatory!

On MetaFilter Being Penalized By Google

Wikipedia Re:You're Doing It Wrong (108 comments)

It's a great site. I miss seeing it in the search results. It's like Yahoo Answers except the people are much more intelligent, the creme de la creme of the web. I wish Google had a way of "voting up" websites such as metafilter in my personalized results.

Perhaps you drop the bomb in the water where everyone can see it explode. You demonstrate the power of the atomic age without using it.

Hmmm. They could have dropped them in the water to prove the superiority. It would have destroyed fish for decades, but, as Kurdt Cobain says "fish don't have feelings"

Yahoo Stops Honoring 'Do-Not-Track' Settings

Wikipedia Re:Surprise, anyone? (300 comments)

I'd like to see a lawsuite concerning crawling information in robots.txt. I don't think it would stand up, it's a voluntary, community-created standard. It's a polite way of saying "this is dynamic information or private". If it's private, then don't make it public! The first things hackers and pentesters do is traverse robots.txt

Kids Can Swipe a Screen But Can't Use LEGOs

If they really gave a **** about kids behavior problems they wouldn't sell coca cola and junk foods and would use taxpayer money (a la the free lunch program) to provide healthier foods.

Major Carriers Shun Broadband Stimulus

Wikipedia Remember Video Dialtone? Fiber To The Curb? (190 comments)

To quote http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/2007/pulpit_20070810_002683.html

This is part three of my explanation of how America went from having the fastest and cheapest Internet service in the world to what we have today -- not very fast, not very cheap Internet service that is hurting our ability to compete economically with the rest of the world. Part one detailed expected improvements in U.S. broadband based on emerging competitive factors, yet decried that it was too little too late. Part two explained how U.S. broadband ISPs are different from most overseas ISPs and how those differences make it unlikely that we'll ever regain leadership in this space. And this week's final part explains that this all came about because Americans were deceived and defrauded by many of their telephone companies to the tune of $200 billion -- money that was supposed to have gone to pay for a broadband future we don't -- and never will -- have.

Judge Rules Against RealDVD

Wikipedia Re:No, Clearly a Horrible Anti-Fair Use Ruling (407 comments)

So it's illegal to backup a dvd, but it's not illegal for VLC media player's Libdvdcss to decode it in realtime by allowing programs to treat it as a block device? And if it is legal, then it should likewise be legal to decode to another format, rather doing a perfect backup.
