Ask Slashdot: How To Pick Up Astronomy and Physics As an Adult?

Wovel Re: You "mind isn't as sharp"? (233 comments)

That's silly. Sure the #1 player is in their 20's. What on earth does that have to do with learning new things? The younger trend for ranked chess players likely has a lot more to do with the fact that there is almost no money it .

Since there are players that were world chess champions for spans of 20 years or longer, your logic makes sense. Since we are the same age, I don't believe your failing logic is a product of your aging mind.

iOS 8 Review

Are you like the same person posting on 5 different accounts? There can't possibly be more than one person in the world that struggles to figure out what case the ios keyboard is in.

iOS 8 Review

Wovel Re:No good for older iPhones (216 comments)

Seriously. Your complaining that stopped providing updates for devices more than 4 years old. Interesting position in a world where you can go out and buy a brand new Android device today and have a 50% chance of ending up with something that will never support the current version of Android. Forget about any of them ever supporting a future version.

How do people come up with this ridiculous stuff.

Wovel Re:Oh noes, I haz been hacked! (609 comments)

They are not real people at all. They can't control their phone. If you don't have an international data plan and you have data roaming on (off by default, just like automatic downloads), you will be paying a lot of money. Period.

Apple Outrages Users By Automatically Installing U2's Album On Their Devices

Wovel Re:Oh noes, I haz been hacked! (609 comments)

Didn't happen. If it did happen , it was a darwin moment. Even following the directoions in the text message the carrier sends whenever you land in a foreign country would have prevented it. By the way, even at AT&Ts 19.95 a meg it would not have been 1000s of dollars.

The default setting is not to automatically download purchases. Why did you choose to lie? Is that YOUR default setting?

Wovel Re:I've been on data roaming since last Monday... (609 comments)

TENS OF MEGABYTES! ENTIRE TENS OF MEGABYTES! OMG THE HORROR. ANYTHING BUT 10s of MEGABYTES.

Pro-tip: Don't leave the country with data roaming on, automatic downloads of purchases, and automatic downloads over cellular all while being on a crappy plan that charges you by the megabyte for data roaming.

Seriously, don't. No matter how could you think your timing is you will be paying a fortune. I guarantee the number of people this cost actual money number in the 10s. I know there are a lot of stupid people in the world. However, less than 20 are actually this stupid.

Why Atheists Need Captain Kirk

Wovel Re: No, no. Let's not go there. Please. (917 comments)

Well put. I also don't ever complain about other people joyfully expressing their beliefs. If it makes them happy, good. I only get concerned when people use religion as a justification for expressing their hate. Too many religions fail to denounce the radical elements. How people who believe in God can also believe it is ok to hate God's creations is confusing to me.

Why Atheists Need Captain Kirk

Wovel Re: illogical captain (917 comments)

There is little logical or consistent about Christianity in general. Catholicism has a decent framework, unfortunately many of the key practitioners turned out to be the worst kind of hypocrites. Christianity in general is a mess. Most non-catholic Christian denominations in the US are primarily based on fear and hate. Much like my former political party is now.

I agree with your distinction between religion and belief. I have no problem with people believing what you want. However, you don't get to change the null-hypothesis just because you have (or believe you have) facts to the contrary. The hypotheses for determining the existence of anything has to be it doesn't exist. It is impossible to prove anything doesn't exist. If I believe fire-breathing flying unicorns that cure cancer are among us, is the burden really on you to prove me wrong?
