Why Do Humans Grow Up So Slowly? Blame the Brain

Xiver Re:not so fast (128 comments)

You can scream this at the top of your lungs until you are blue in the face, but it probably won't make a difference. Explaining it carefully might convince a few people, but not about things they already believe in. Its been said so much that you wouldn't even post it under your username, because you know it will get adversely moderated. People have read it so much they cringe when they see it.

You'll never be able to convince people that toasters don't cause suicidal tendencies in teenagers.

California Regulator Seeks To Shut Down 'Learn To Code' Bootcamps

Xiver Re:California (374 comments)

Maybe Red vs. Blue isn't the right argument here, as in most cases. Maybe the right argument is liberty vs. statism. Do you want to be free to chase your dreams or do you want the government to secure your prosperity?

Who Is Liable When a Self-Driving Car Crashes?

Xiver Re:Efficiency. (937 comments)

It may not be as fuel efficient, but I consider my time to be worth much more than the few dollars that I would save by driving slower. Owning a self driving car would enable me to make better use of time while I'm forced to be on the road, but in many cases would still rather cut the drive time from my trip.

Driving 75 mph instead of 50 mph reduces my drive time by about 33%.

Goodbye, IQ Tests: Brain Imaging Predicts Intelligence Levels

Xiver Re:Intelligence and Wisdom are Somewhat Orthogonal (213 comments)

You'll see it over and over again. People believe what they want to believe and what they want to believe is often what is in their best interest to believe. Don't get me wrong, people do not set out to close their minds to opposing points of view, but it usually takes an overabundance of evidence by a trusted party to convince anyone to change their minds, no matter how intelligent they are. As a corollary; the longer someone holds a particular view the more difficult it is for that person to change that view.

Of course I could be wrong, but you'll have to prove it to me.

Goodbye, IQ Tests: Brain Imaging Predicts Intelligence Levels

Xiver Re:You may have high IQ ... (213 comments)

Knowledge - Things that you know. (What)
Understanding - How things that you know relate to other things that you know. (How and Why)
Wisdom - Correctly applying understanding to produce desired results. (When and Where)

IQ tests attempt to measure understanding and wisdom. The best IQ tests supply most of the knowledge necessary to correctly complete the problems.

Ask Slashdot: What Defines Good Developer Culture?

Xiver It might be different for different people, but... (239 comments)

For me its flexibility in the hours I work, access to training, and being able to write the kind of code that I think should be written for a project.

By flexibility to don't mean full time or part time, I mean that I can come and go as a please as long as I meet my project requirements and make my time.

Training includes classes, conferences, research projects, and access to research materials such as books and hardware.

I've worked for a couple of companies where I was just a code monkey who was only allowed to fill in the blanks that my betters left undone. That kind of job is a nightmare of poor design and implementation.

Antarctic ice growing

Xiver Xiver writes  |  more than 5 years ago

Xiver (13712) writes "The Australian is reporting on a paper to be published soon by the British Antarctic Survey in the journal Geophysical Research Letters which is expected to confirm that over the past 30 years, the area of sea ice around the continent has expanded.
The Austrialian also reported on the NASA & University of California, Irvine (UCI). study last year which stated that the ice cap is melting faster than predicted.
According to the articles the new study seems to be much more in depth while the old study was based only on satellite data obtained in 1996, 2000 and 2006. Who should we believe this year?"
