California DMV Told Google Cars Still Need Steering Wheels

Xoltri Re:Not surprising (506 comments)

The cause of the Toyota problem was people hitting the accelerator instead of the brake. So if you take away the accelerator pedal I think we're good to go.

Skilled Manual Labor Critical To US STEM Dominance

Xoltri Re:Liability, Funding, Responsibilities (367 comments)

I remember in my grade 8 shop class, we were allowed to use a small forge to melt lead (that we could purchase for $10 for a block of it) to then make small army men. It was pretty cool, but I can't believe they let us play with molten lead and then lead toys!

Kids Can Swipe a Screen But Can't Use LEGOs

Xoltri Re:Specialized Pieces (355 comments)

Not entirely true, if you're creative enough. For example recently I bought my 5 year old a Mixel. It had these hook like things on it for horns that, as you suggest, I thought were specifically for that model. However to my surprise he remembered that the same pieces also came in a spider-man lego kit, ran up stairs and managed to find it within a minute (which is a feat in itself considering how much lego there is). So even the kits themselves are still a good creative toy, even when they eventually get mixed in with all the other lego.

Navy Creates Fuel From Seawater

Xoltri Re:Any chemists want to weigh in?? (256 comments)

My favorite is the MSDS for sand. Like at the park. Imagine this warning at the playground, haha!

Personal Protection: Safety glasses. Lab coat. Dust respirator. Be sure to use an approved/certified respirator or equivalent. Gloves.

Personal Protection in Case of a Large Spill: Splash goggles. Full suit. Dust respirator. Boots. Gloves. A self contained breathing apparatus should be used to avoid inhalation of the product. Suggested protective clothing might not be sufficient; consult a specialist BEFORE handling this product.

Tesla Used A Third of All Electric-Car Batteries Last Year

Xoltri Re:Not all Lithiums the same (236 comments)

If a LIPO based car is a bomb on wheels with an energy density of 0.36[2]–0.875 MJ/kg, then what would you call a regular car when Gasoline has an energy density of 100 times that (~46 MJ/kg)?

Although, I guess you'd need to consider the speed at which that energy can be released, and I'm not sure how LIPOs compare on that front given that gasoline needs to be sufficiently mixed with oxygen.

CES 2014: Stefan Lindsay Demonstrates the gTar (Video)

Xoltri Re:Neat idea. (104 comments)

Yeah it's not perfect, there are some things I find annoying. However for the most part, I like the adaptive difficulty. The most difficult part is in a song when it transitions from single notes to chords, often I have to pause to figure it out. It does help ease you into a song though generally, and is especially fun for beginners who have no previous experience. I bought a bass guitar as well and that is even more fun for beginners as it has only 4 strings.

Xoltri Neat idea. (104 comments)

Kinda neat, but I've been using Rocksmith 2014 now and it's really improved my playing and most importantly given me the drive to play more, and on the plus side you use a regular electric guitar that is a real instrument.

Interview: Alan Adler Answers Your Questions About Coffee and Throwing Objects

Xoltri Love the aeropress. (49 comments)

I'll be watching what this guy does in the future for sure. The aeropress is a great device that makes great coffee. I use it almost daily, and the 4 cup capacity is not a problem as if people are coming over I just make several batches and keep the espresso in the fridge. Even do that for camping trips, that way I don't have to pack the aeropress when camping, just bring the espresso.

Man Killed By His Own Radio-Controlled Helicopter In Brooklyn

Xoltri Re:OUCH (479 comments)

It should be noted that the table landing video was a different model, it was a small quad copter and did not pose nearly the same risk as the one that killed him did.

NASA Lets Us Watch the Sun Spin For 3 Years In 4 Minute Video

Xoltri Re:Do they know why? (34 comments)

I read somewhere that the cycle is due to the fact that because the sun is made of gas, different latitudes rotate at different rates and depending on how they match up determines the cycle. It's also an average of 11 years, not exactly 11 years.

Mosquitoes Beginning To Ignore DEET Repellent

Xoltri Re:In the meantime (232 comments)

You must live in an area without many mosquitoes. Spend a few minutes on a cool evening outside in Canada and you will sing a different tune, no doubt. Last year was an epic bad year for mosquitoes. I have a video of them literally coating the fence in my back yard. If it wasn't for DEET you can't be outside.

Ask Slashdot: Really Short Time Wasters?

Xoltri Re:Say what? (279 comments)

Not sure why you're so mad....I got a couple of good tips out of the comments. Going to try that game fantastic contraption, and duolingo seems worth a look.

Maybe you should take a quick break and go for a walk, or play some angry birds, or do a crossword puzzle....
