Should a Web Startup Go Straight To the Cloud?

ZipprHead Scaling a website (442 comments)

Yes, use the cloud if you expect a lot of growth. No, do not use Microsoft products, they are great for the enterprise, but not for a one man shop. Use some nosql tech, Memcache, and some scripting language with your favorite JavaScript library.

Utah To Teach USA is a Republic, Not a Democracy

ZipprHead Off base summary (1277 comments)

This summary is a bit off base. From the article:

"HB220 would require schools to teach students that the U.S. is a compound constitutional republic and about other forms of government such as pure democracy, monarchy and oligarchy along with political philosophies and economic systems such as socialism, individualism and free-market capitalism. "

Where does it say "force public school teachers to teach that the USA is a republic". Sounds like they just want to be sure the students are aware of all forms of government.

Foodtubes Proposes Underground, Physical Internet

ZipprHead Pneumatic tubes? (431 comments)

Why are the calling them food tubes? We already have Pneumatic tubes. This just a scaled up version. I had a similar idea once for big cities. It might make a lot of sense, especially if it's general purpose, like for the post office.

But "food tubes"... really?!!? That just sounds gross. You brits are weird. How about the "megmatic tube system" that happens to also ship food?

Does Net Neutrality Violate the Fifth Amendment?

ZipprHead This kind of thinking is dangerous (341 comments)

You have to be very careful how this is thought about. Yes, you may consider it private property, but under that analogy we are leasing that space. If this space is paid for, it is our right to do with it what we please. The ISP should not control how we use our leased space, as much as our landlords should not be able to tell us what religion to practice in our leased apartments.

I can understand from an operating system point of view why you would want to support Flash.

Serious New Java Flaw Affects All Browsers

ZipprHead Is it really that bad? (164 comments)

From the article:

"Java.exe and javaw.exe support an undocumented-hidden command-line parameter "-XXaltjvm" and curiosly also "-J-XXaltjvm" (see -J switch in javaws.exe). This instructs Java to load an alternative JavaVM library (jvm.dll or libjvm.so) from the desired path. Game over."

But you would have to get that DLL or SO there in the first place no?

Open Science API Competition

ZipprHead ZipprHead writes  |  more than 2 years ago

ZipprHead writes "The Public Library of Science and Mendeley are hosting a "Binary Battle". A competition to develop applications built on their public APIs. There's $16,000 in prize money to be won plus other cool gifts. Not as much as the cool million offered for the Netflix API competition, but there is a lot of good karma associated with contributing to open access research that enhance scientists' and all our lives and 16k is well... still 16k. They've compiled a list of ideas sourced from the scientific community. You just have to write the code to wire things together.

Disclaimer, I work at the Public Library of Science."
